Howdy, I need some help. You see, there's this guy, the KnightDuck, who keeps sending pigeons to attack me. I could use the Mallard Mafia's help...

Ok, time for the list (I can't believe I missed this thread):

  1. Greater rhea - why is DQ (that's what I like about Texas) asking for essentially a clone? Simple: the rhea is a fantastic addition to a SA grassland habitat and it would have an interspecies bonus with tapirs, anteaters, and capybaras
  2. Curassow (any species) - I know that there are blue-billed and red-billed and even yellow-billed, but to me they're all the same
  3. Scarlet ibis - the crimson king of the really-cool rainforest
  4. Roseate spoonbill - the funny flamingo faker
  5. Superb lyrebird - the master of mimicry, the courageous copycat of Oceania
  6. Golden pheasant - a splash of gold would be nice
  7. Lady Amherst's pheasant - basically a white version of the golden pheasant
  8. Toco toucan - I always forget about these, but they're fantastic
  9. Laughing kookaburra - who wouldn't want this?
  10. Scarlet macaw - my favorite macaw species
  11. Budgerigar - yes, I know they are domestic, but they could have the axolotl treatment and have the wild, green type and them the colormorphs are the other color budgies
  12. Rainbow lorikeet - another splash of color, y'all
  13. Victoria crowned pigeon - a blue bird from Southeast Asia
  14. Ocellated turkey - the wild turkey's showy cousin
  15. Resplendent quetzal - this is a wishlist and a game where we get animals limited in international zoos. I want a quetzal even if it's only in Mexican zoos
5 more you say? Where shall I begin?
  1. Horned screamer - they have the funkiest sounds ever. Would be a great bird to have in-game
  2. Quaker parrot - these little green parrots are from South America, but they are very adaptable and now there are feral populations in the States. I see them quite often here in Texas
  3. North Island brown kiwi - I honestly don't care which species of kiwi comes, but this is the one people mention so I'll add this one. I want this little (soccer ball-sized) puffball in the game
  4. Sulfur-crested cockatoo - an eccentric parrot that would be quite nice to have in-game
  5. Secretary Bird - probably the most essential bird to come to the game for African representation

Using the same method I've used here and here, I took Zootierliste's Top Holdings chart and filtered out the following:
  • Anything without feathers
  • Habitat birds in the game, as well as ones I have on my habitat wishlist(s), so this one doesn't end up being a subset of those (please don't get mad at me for no duck)
  • Domesticated and breeding-forms
After this procedure, of the remaining feathered friends, I took the first 20 to conjure up a list:
  1. Blue-and-yellow macaw - 557 EAZA holdings
  2. (European) eagle-owl* - 502 EAZA holdings
  3. Snowy owl - 496 EAZA holdings
  4. Red-and-green macaw - 334 EAZA holdings
  5. Laughing kookaburra - 291 EAZA holdings
  6. (Eurasian) great gray-owl - 277 EAZA holdings
  7. (Congo) gray parrot** - 273 EAZA holdings
  8. Harris's hawk (no subspecific status)*** - 265 EAZA holdings
  9. (European) kestrel - 246 EAZA holdings
  10. Little owl (no subspecific status) - 242 EAZA holdings
  11. (Western) griffon vulture - 240 EAZA holdings
  12. Barn owl (no subspecific status) - 232 EAZA holdings
  13. Diamond dove - 218 EAZA holdings
  14. Rose-ringed parakeet (no subspecific status) - 218 EAZA holdings
  15. (North Eurasian) raven - 216 EAZA holdings
  16. Rosy-faced lovebird (no subspecific status) - 211 EAZA holdings
  17. Scarlet macaw - 210 EAZA holdings
  18. Cockatiel - 206 EAZA holdings
  19. Steppe eagle - 200 EAZA holdings
  20. Tawny owl (no subspecific status) - 195 EAZA holdings
*Since Zootierliste takes note of the subspecific status of animals in their top holdings chart and this thread probably prefers full species ranks, I've put common names for subspecies in parentheses. I couldn't ignore them entirely, since the figures are only for the aforementioned subspecies. When combined with others, holdings can increase quite a bit (e.g. Eurasian eagle-owl and gray parrot).
**Had to include common names for invalid or disputed (sub)species, due to limitations concerning the website's holdings stats as explained above (e.g. Congo gray parrot).
***When an entry has a "no subspecific status" note in parentheses, this means there are other subspecies defined on Zootierliste's system with separate holdings, so the total may actually be considerably higher (e.g. barn owl) than the figures specified on the list. Doesn't apply to entries without this note.

Sadly, there is no English version of this particular page, so you'd have to translate it using your browser or a third-party application if you don't speak German.

Edit: Fixed typo.

Votes for generic birds are acceptable. You want a mallard? Vote Mallard. BUTyou want a duck but don't care what kind? Vote Duck.
  • NOTE: Try keep generic votes with at least some level of specificity:
    • Vote for "Duck" or "Goose" or "Swan" - GOOD.
    • Vote for "Any Waterfowl" - BAD.
I'm going to exploit this rule a little, sorry in advance, it's just that birds is such a diverse group and it's so behind mammals at this stage of the game...
  1. Pheasant (any)
  2. Mallard
  3. Duck (any other)

  20. Eagle (any other)
Woah, lots of sacrifices had to be made, even with the new 20 species limit and using lots of generic votes! 😅 No rockhopper penguin, no kiwi, no heron, no condor or any other vulture, no falcon, no secretary bird, no grey parrot, no lory, no parakeet, no bird of paradise or magpie or any other songbird...

List with no preference order, I mostly followed the taxonomy.

16. Sulphur crested cockatoo

Happy Tropical Pack Eve everyone! The list has been updated to include those who voted for their additional 5.

I'm hoping to hit at least 100 users by summer DLC time, and we're already over 40! Tell your friends, family, and feathered fanatics to participate!

Much to my surprise, macaws have been dethroned by owls for the top spot. Cockatoos, eagles, and the Victoria-crowned pigeon saw some big boosts, while the Toco Toucan remains supreme as the most voted individual bird.

The hoatzin is the coolest. Their babies have claws on their wings like dinosaurs. It would be a very interesting addition for the Amazon.

Bush stone-curlew! They've been my favourite bird ever since I was a young child, having become familiar with them on regular trips to northern Australia with my family. They've got that slim lanky build that a lot of my favourite animals tend to have, and their big stark eyes can make them look either cute or eerie depending on their expression (the two best ways for an animal to look). Birds with bright gaudy colours don't tend to look very attractive to me (with some exceptions), but the subtle but interesting colouration of these camouflaged birds very much appeals to my personal aesthetics. They also get bonus points for being primarily nocturnal, as all the best birds are.

Probably what seals the deal for them as my favourite bird though is their call - it takes me right back to being a kid on a camping trip, listening to them call out from the darkness as I lay in my tent. It's such a mournful yet peaceful sound:

As a final note, their chicks are adorable!

Originally widespread across Australia, unfortunately for me they've become extremely rare in most parts of southern Australia thanks to fox predation (they're still very common in northern Australia where the climate is less suitable for foxes, even thriving in cities) and so they're not a species I get to experience in the wild regularly.

Favourite bird? got to be the white tailed eagle (better known as the sea eagle in scotland) since i have seen tons of them in the wild, not exactly much of a zoo related favourite bird but i rarely actually see birds in captivity
