Well after 30+ pages any thread is bound to drift off topic and to be fair Fdev really didn't give us much to discuss anyway. No, but this is the Update 15 thread, not the NMS thread...![]()

Not easy to get hyped when we don't know what we should get hyped about.Hyping over U15 should be discussed here, not NMS

Pretty much all we know is that U15 is most likely about the next "stage" of maelstrom and that it got delayed.
This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react.
I see what you did there! I never imagined you'd become one of my favorite posters on this forum. Welcome to the dark side!Talk of updates in other space games is getting Boron-ing.
On the topic of Borons, I've been amazed at how quickly Egosoft has been pumping out some pretty major bug fixes to the X4 Beta I'm currently participating in. Every week they release a change log that's more impressive than one of Frontier's quarterly updates to Elite. All these "software is hard" arguments in defense of Elite's glacial pace of development just melt away when you look at what the competition is doing. Granted, writing good software IS hard, but I feel Frontier's problems are much deeper than that.Hello Games makes updates, Frontier makes excuses.

It's more the difference in attitudes between the developers being discussed than NMS itself.Hyping over U15 should be discussed here, not NMS

Let's add Keen and Egosoft to that list, as they too are releasing huge updates to their space games this month as well. These updates have been highly promoted for some time now, rather than veiled in secrecy like Frontier (and only Frontier) does with Elite. I started replaying X4, which I was taking a break from, based on the hype of this new update alone, so the idea that secrecy is good for a game is just rubbish.Honestly, you can't tell that what people are doing is highlighting the difference in "engagement and performance" between the comparatively small Hello Games team and the supposedly large Elite Dangerous cohort in FDEV?
I don't think anyone's been claiming that secrecy over future updates is good for Elite Dangerous.so this idea that secrecy is good for a game is just rubbish.
What's the expression? You reap what you sow?I don't think anyone's been claiming that secrecy over future updates is good for Elite Dangerous.
...just that it's better than the other choice, which is saying a bunch of stuff which then has to be amended or walked back repeatedly over the following months, piling up threads like this each time.
Great: announce stuff in advance, release it on the advertised schedule with the advertised features
Middling: announce stuff the day before release
Terrible: announce stuff in advance, then announce that it will be delayed, then announce that you're going to do something different, then announce that that will also be delayed, then finally release something different again
The top one isn't an option for Elite Dangerous, so...
I can't really see why not.The top one isn't an option for Elite Dangerous, so...
No, I'm not familiar with the internal details of Frontier or Elite Dangerous to know why their difficulty estimates for developments continue to be far too optimistic, either.I can't really see why not.
I have suggested in the past Frontier should use their normal methods and then add on a flat rate of 6 months, but I think it was derided as far too simplisticNo, I'm not familiar with the internal details of Frontier or Elite Dangerous to know why their difficulty estimates for developments continue to be far too optimistic, either.
But observationally it remains true that I don't think Frontier have ever released a public schedule more than 6 months ahead that was fully met on both time and features, no matter how vague it's been in the first place.
And presumably they'd have already fixed that issue if they could, so anything that depends on it being fixed isn't really an option no matter how good it might be.
Would still have missed on Fleet Carriers, Odyssey Console Release, and this thread's Key Feature Overhaul.I have suggested in the past Frontier should use their normal methods and then add on a flat rate of 6 months, but I think it was derided as far too simplistic![]()
I think for many its that lack of confidence on anything. While its not 2018 levels at the same time its 'where now?'. Most games I play have a close in update and further out have a theme or aim to act as a waypoint. If FD had said "its Powerplay" thats enough for something so far out but it gives a waypoint to group around. By saying "we are looking at something" is just empty rhetoric since we know they'd do that anyway....just that it's better than the other choice, which is saying a bunch of stuff which then has to be amended or walked back repeatedly over the following months, piling up threads like this each time.

Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react.
