Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More

Still, we had a 2 years narrative that ended last autumn. Which was interesting to say at least

Then we had the U14 with i regard as an update since it added a rather new dimension to the narrative and the war against thargs
And we have U15, albeit with a month delay that is promising further developments to the narrative and among the biggest moments

So i count this as 2 updates in 7 months - which is not bad enough.

Sure there is the feeling of disappointment regarding the fabled major feature revamp, but as i said - until i know exactly what's to be revamped, i cant say that i'm disappointed or glad that it has been postponed.

Edit:
Anyway, One month till update 15...
So In the meantime, i'm restarting the settlement missions...
To be specifically, i'm after Ax Combat Logs and Xeno-Defense Protocols
Biological Weapon Data and Chemical Weapon Data too, maybe Virology Data?

Anyone selling? 😇
The narrative is great- at least here FD have learnt lessons from when they switched it off- and U14 has been great. Hopefully 15 builds on that.

And yet you guys are here on Elite forums instead of playing NMS or posting on their forums

I really dont like the cartoonish graphics that look like Spore and CandyCrush had a baby nor the flight model (joking - i know it doesnt have any) and... well there are many things i dont like from NMS, yet i dont go on their forums to complain about it... weird, isn't it?

Could it be because we are fans of space games?
ED has potential, but that doesn't mean it's the only game we play.

I see what you did there! I never imagined you'd become one of my favorite posters on this forum. Welcome to the dark side!

On the topic of Borons, I've been amazed at how quickly Egosoft has been pumping out some pretty major bug fixes to the X4 Beta I'm currently participating in. Every week they release a change log that's more impressive than one of Frontier's quarterly updates to Elite. All these "software is hard" arguments in defense of Elite's glacial pace of development just melt away when you look at what the competition is doing. Granted, writing good software IS hard, but I feel Frontier's problems are much deeper than that.

Totally agree, what happens in Frontier is really weird.

[...] ED has potential [...]
This is why I'm "here on the Elite forums", along with the fact that I did my long tour of duty with Elite and paid my many dues, which I think earns me a seat at this table called the forum. And it's not "instead" of being on other forums (either / or), it's both / and. In fact I've been quite vocal on X4's forums (Steam) about various UI issues that are driving me nuts.

EDIT / UPDATE

I'm beginning to rethink my previous declaration, as while I still believe Elite has potential, I'm seriously doubting it has potential for me. Once again Odyssey is on sale for a pretty aggressive price, and once again I'm not interested. With that in mind, my "better angel" is telling me to leave threads like these to those who actually care. I'll always have the Legacy threads to relive my glory days 🤗

A change in the interface and telling a story is an extremely poor job. Added to a synematic as poor as what a 6-year-old would do at school, it seems to me an offense to all ED players.
Do not call updates to 2 additions that add practically nothing to what has always existed in ED.
I have decided that as long as ED does not show that it is developing and has a future, I will not waste money on ARX.

None of the game mechanics that were added in U14 existed in Ed previously (it they were already in the game, they would not have had to add it, duh)*
We will see what is U15 about

It's a big galaxy out there, if all you can see is the interface, you should really spend your leisure time in other games 🤷‍♂️

*(try to say that in Archer's voice 😂)

I also still play the old Microsoft Solitaire. It has no potential and will not be further developed.
But it's fun because it just works and does what it's supposed to.
I had that feeling with ED for a while too, but that got lost a while ago.

Support a faction.
Start a war.
Gain your faction a station.
Use your exploration data to nurture them.
Flip the System to your faction.
Expand it into other systems.
Get attacked by another faction.
Seek your vengeance by opposing your enemies at every opportunity.
Negotiate a peace treaty.

Just a thought ;)
Done that in 2022 with my squadron, made a player faction, conquer 3 systems, and what? nothing to gain, still no real progress to my cmdr, just some meaningless repetitive stuff. i do my best to enjoy the game, but elite keep pushing me away.

Ah, yes. When interdicting a target with your Python would cause more damage to your ship than the highest bounty paid. 😁

Imho ship combat (and outfitting) was best shortly before Engineers were added.
There was a time when there were "engineered" modules that were already properly balanced. Remember "Overchaqrged", "Cool running", "Rapid Fire" and a bunch of others?

Those were the days...

Z...

How I looked for them in vain.....

I also remember a hard landing bankrupting me when collision detection was punishing, teaching me the value of good piloting.

Sigh I do miss the ED that taught the value of money.

I must say that whenever I see denigrations about the stylised art direction of NMS (...which I do not play, btw), it makes me cringe a little, because of its invariably being contrasted with that of Elite Dangerous, around here... ED graphics is "realistic" is it?

-That typical sci-fi art "greebling" all over the place is what you would see on real-life structures? -The "kitbashing" overall? -The shading? -The lighting? -The relative scales of things? -Those people do not look at all like plastic dolls?

-I mean, to my eyes even the latest pre-arranged UE5 showcase demos, with plausibly arranged high-poly 3D-scanned real-world objects, physically plausible realtime lighting and shadows, non-exaggerated physics interactions, fluid simulation with foaming and all, performance-capture-animated metahuman characters cranked up to maximum quality, etc, etc, still retain that particular overall clay/plaster-y look to them, that all game 3D graphics so far has always has had.

Hey, to each their own taste, but...

well, this whole game is about repeating stuff.
If you like it, you will repeat it for years.
If not, well.
There are plenty of other games to try.

They are different art styles. NMS is still pulp sci fi cover which although different is not hard on the eye.

ED falls down not on greebles as such but the small stuff like zero g outposts being identical to gravity based station interiors, hydroponics upside-down, strangely large cockpits and so on- in short it falls down on consistency.

No disagreement from me; I was commenting specifically on the graphics, and trying to restrain myself from mentioning any of the things you list, since the NMS graphics/art style is what keeps being defecated on.

(EDIT: ...although, I guess maa-aybe there could be some idea behind the hydroponics vats, to deliberately make the plants grow in slight negative gravity, and string out like hanging ropes - dunno. :7)

The art style itself is generally fine for ED, if a tad generic. I love flicking through the ED Digital Art book because at least to begin with there was cohesion- for example the difference between Imp and Fed cap ships (Imperial having that ring for gravity and being dual role for war / diplomacy, Feds going all in on automation and kneecap busting lasers.)

As I said the issue lies in that for so long ED has lacked a human scale viewpoint and with EDO its clashed- whereas NMS has never really had that problem with its simplicity and having space legs on day 1.

Steering a bit back on topic, I hope U15 adds more of the proc gen graffiti / posters that sprung up after Salvations oopsie and scuff up the slightly bland interiors with BGS magic.

If so I hope they include removal resources for some epic 'not on my wall' action :)

Tropisms are the things that make plants grow towards and away from things roots tend to grow towards gravity while stems do the opposite so a plant placed upside down will tend to grow in a bend so things point the right way. It is of course more complicated than that but it is decades since I was thought any of this.

Sort of on topic I would really like the eventual rework to put a timer on things like combat bonds and bounties much like the one for CG reward money so that say two weeks after the tick where you earned the bond or bounty it gets cashed automatically, this would give plenty of time to cash in for other purposes like reputation or standing and would mitigate against hoarders crashing CGs within hours by dumping bonds they got last year.

Now that Frontier has an entirely separate game called Horizons Legacy, I wish they'd add one more version called Horizons Legacy++ (or something), where it's the same game code as Legacy, but the BGS is the original "everything was hard and challenging and costly" one from those early days. I'd install that version of Elite! Especially if they went the extra mile and reset all the first discovery tags and removed all the PMFs. Heck, I would pay money for that!

What I'd love: an ED H with all NPCs having engineering, money as per 1.x days, old collision, pre-engineered ships only (like EDO suits but random- no way to engineer ships otherwise) and really ramp up the difficulty.

I'd pay good money for that, an actual galaxy that hates me and that I have to claw my way out of the mud :D
