Yeah, I see what you're saying. And yes, it's a good old fashioned copy/paste of the ship system - right down to engineering everything. I must say, "on foot" combat is probably the least enticing thing about Odyssey. As I understand it though, there is a stealth element to it - sneaking around settlements and whatnot - but I've never done that stuff, so I'm not 100% sure if that gameplay is at all interesting or fun.

They apparently copied the template, then added additional things to drag out the time requirements. All ship engineering mats have a use, only half of the EDO mats have any use. Ship engineering can be removed, EDO engineering is permanent. I kinda wish they had done a complete copy and paste, but I'm also glad they didn't.

The stealth element isn't on par with Hitman or Dishonored, but it can be fun for a little while. It doesn't take long before it feels like just another routine though.

It's slow. Really slow. I keep taking half year breaks, and when I return there is nothing new.
They said they cut ship interior to focus better on the legs part. But my god, we've had NO update to the legs gameplay.
Where's the derelicts to explore, abandoned bases, underground tunnels, ancient ruins, deserted colonies, thargoids on foot, etc.
All we have is the same cookie cutter bases and random events.

This isn't SC (hurrah!) you can modify all the existing ships for whatever role you want (unlike SC)
We don't want paid for ships, that doesn't work, SC has proved it.

Lastly welcome back, glad you have dragged yourself away from that ship collecting game that's keeping a certain company's pension scheme topped up.
Having been a backer in SC i log back in from time to time just to appreciated ED.
Elite isnt perfect, they haven't scammed persuaded folks to fork out millions of pounds on ships that never actually do what they were advertised to do and thus don't have the budget of the never ending alpha that is SC.
We have a slower pace here and i for one am greatful for the way the game is progressing and as someone who is mainly into exploration im not fussed about shiny new stuff, it will come all in good time.

yep no problem, it was last upgraded end of 2016, its i7-7700 3.60GHZ, 16GB ram using a standard GTX 1070.

OK, not hugely different from mine then (7700K, 32 GB RAM, GTX 970), but that extra GPU grunt will certainly make a significant difference in EDO.
NB: obvs your machine is not 10 years old - the end of 2016 is less than 6.5 years ago
I don't think too many people with machines that are 10+ years old will be enjoying ED 4.0 that much even without the ground combat elements of EDO.

As for the RIP/doom stuff, I know people have been saying it for ages and been wrong. I wasn't around in 2018 but I've not personally felt like the game was doomed until the last 12 months or so, and it's the attitude from FD that makes me feel it now. Time will tell and I fervently hope that I'm wrong.

I've come to realize that one of the reasons ED will never die is because it wasn't ever technically "live". What I mean by this is that it doesn't suffer from empty lobbies... or a lack of enough players to get a raid going... or too few people to defend territory you conquered long ago. It doesn't need a sprawling and fully engaged playerbase in order for it to serve its primary function for the people who do play it and who routinely drop it only to come back eventually for various lengths of time.

When multiplayer games suffer death (and many of them in fact never do actually die), it's because the fun was dependent on people who aren't there any more. While that is the reason some people leave ED, it isn't really relevant. New content comes out. They come back. They haunt the halls, fade away, and return soon enough.

On the other hand, Elite Dangerous is about twice as popular, if not more, than X4 Foundations (hissss!), yet X4 feels more "invested in" by its developers than Elite. X4 also doesn't have Arx or the requirement to buy alts to run multiple different saves, so I feel Frontier makes way more money off of Elite than Egosoft does from X4.

Of course "feel" is the operative word. Meanwhile, No Man's Sky is kicking both our butts when it comes to active and total players, yet HG doesn't make any money from any of their updates or cosmetics. I'm not sure how the economics of that works..

Strange that you say that since they were in the Third Person Perspective and not in the First Person Perspective like, Doom, Call of Duty, Crysis, Metro, etc...

Also, Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 were RPGs, much more than they were TPSs (Third Person Shooters) like Gears of War, etc...

LOL, you're right! I sometimes "mix my metaphors" - if a third person is immersive enough, I see the world in a first person sort of way, at least in my mind's eye when it's a fond but distant memory. But to keep it pure, I'm now not sure what my favorite space-based FPS would be. Perhaps Overwatch (moonbase map is space-based). Though I'm sure Overwatch isn't a pure "COD-like" FPS either, despite being in the first person shooting at other players.

I suppose the closest FPS to Odyssey that I last enjoyed would be the earlier Battlefield games. IIRC Battlefield 3 was a favorite of mine. Star Wars Battlefront is probably closer to Elite being space-based, but while beautiful, I grew bored with the actual gameplay quicker than expected, not sure exactly why.

I was also a HUGE fan of a game called MAG, which is kinda like Battlefield but better IMO. I also greatly enjoyed a game called Enemy Territory. If Odyssey emulated any of these games, I'd be sucked right in, but it doesn't come close.

The GTX 970 is a huge problem with EDO, it's sufficient for running Horizons acceptably, but as you say certainly not EDO.

2,800 hours in one game is a huge number for games these days considering the rise of mobile gaming and short attention spans. I consider a game that holds my attention for thousands of hours to be a successful game even if I decide after that amount of time to stop playing. For the amount of money I have actually paid for my play time, over 7,000 hours, it was and still is a huge bargain including the Odyssey DLC.

I am glad the OP came back, but her list of problems I don't consider seriously because you would need to be following the game fairly closely to understand why some of them are incorrect or simply misunderstandings, as other people have posted. But that's neither here nor there, development can only go as fast the the makers are willing to push it, EDO was a huge step for FDEV, introducing walking, new types of atmospheric planets, station interiors and ground combat, that's almost an entire new game for them and I am not surprised it took a long time and there were a lot of problems and I still think they are in recovery mode from that effort, but I also think that are actually working on new stuff for the game in the background, I'll hang around for a few more thousand hours myself at least. Have fun all!

Going stealthy in Odyssey gets around the shields (they turn them off) so no weapon swapping. It's fairly simple though far easier/more effective to bring your SRV to bear or just obliterate opposition with a missile armed ship.

Thank you, OP. I've stopped playing ED for nearly 1 year, but started again a month ago to bring my ship back to the bubble (still on my way home from DW2). I love this game, but I only did exploration for the last few years. I'm planning to buy this exploration-suit for my cmdr, I'm heading back and afterwards I'll start into the void again. I really hope FD will take care of this great game, adding some nice things to it in the future, especially for exploration. But I fear this won't happen. What really sucks is the graphical downgrade (AA) and the missing features (gas giants, no ring shadows, black holes, comets and asteroids, lightning storms on planets surfaces etc.)

Air support should scare the pants off infantry. Frontier should lean into it; players should be able to do that but the AI should react. NPCs on the ground should seek shelter (including breaking into the buildings which they don't do) so you might catch a few but not all. Instead of facing a bunch of oblivious guys walking around with no shields you are now looking at rooting out guys with shields up in fortified positions. Take your pick. They should also call their own air support. Can you imagine being in the middle of a CZ and enemy aircraft makes a strafing or bombing run (maybe tie this into an event you can circumvent on the ground)?
