So I checked out Elite after ditching it for Star Citizen

The older games are just that, old. They were great for their time, people expect more now. It's a real trick to deliver a lesser xp than the old games though.
I'm not saying that people should be satisfied with wireframe graphics at 5 fps. I just find it interesting that people who enjoyed these older games set in a single-player universe make statements like "I would not be interested in Elite Dangerous if it were a single-player game." There are, after all, plenty of really good new single-player games out there!

I have a feeling that at least some of these people are playing, and even enjoying, Elite Dangerous in the parallel universe where it was released as a single player game rather than an MMO. Not that it has any weight on this universe, so I'll leave it at that.

I'm one of the ones saying that. And i stand by it (even tho i play mostly in solo - which in ED is not single player, no matter how counter-intuitive it may be)

For sure there are plenty of good single player games out there, but guess what... I'm dedicating almost all my gaming time to Elite, not to those "really good new single-player games out there" (for example i played Witcher 3 for exactly the tutorial and some 30 minutes more and that was it, and while i did got CP2077 when it was discounted to €30, i've yet to install it, nevermind play it)

I took a break from Elite for a few weeks and got into DCS a bit and now my time is now pretty evenly split between the two.

For the life of me, I can't understand why people spend so much time talking about how bad a game is and complaining endlessly about it. It's as if complaining is the game they enjoy the most. It's never made any sense to me, especially when it's the same old, tired, done to death topics every single time.

If I could come up with a laundry list of things about this game I didn't like, I wouldn't be playing it anymore. I guess some people just live to complain though.

And I have said often those people should be trying out Oolite; it's even moddable which seems to be a big selling point for them.

Even back when I was playing E84 using my Atari stick with the one button, I knew I wanted a better controller. I didn't even know HOTASes were a thing (if they were even a thing at that stage). I have one now and I wouldn't go back.

I'd play E84 and I'd talk with my friends about what we did, share good trade routes and combat tips. Even though I'd never even heard of a LAN game at that time I thought it'd be great if I could play the game with these same friends. Fight pirates as a team, fly escort, etc.

So yeah, I wouldn't have backed ED if it was single player, I'd just have continued playing Oolite.

I bookmarked a fascinating article about this from a few years ago. Apparently, openly complaining about things we enjoy doing is a weird form of invitation to bonding with others, as well as a form of stress relief. Within communities like this one, it's also potentially a means of communicating just how much we actually enjoy the game, sort of like a strange, semi-covert declaration of just how invested we are in Elite Dangerous.

If Oolite had ED's graphics, flight model, and.... the list is too big to compare Oolite with ED. I don't see it at all as a valid "single-player version of ED". Now for people who are still in love with original Elite to this day, those folks would be well served by Oolite.

It surprises me that you would choose Oolite over a single-player version of ED... I get not investing big bucks in a kickstarter, but you wouldn't buy Horizons on sale?

It's okay, of course - you do you, I just fail to understand the reasoning, that's all.

Honestly, if the KS hadn't caught me I'd have tuned it out and just carried on with what I was doing with Oolite. Maybe years later I might have had a look at it again and maybe I'd have picked it up on sale. Yeah, there are things you can't do with Oolite that you can with Horizons but you also can't fly the original iCourier with the spinning nacelles (and much sexier design), or for a lark fly the Planet Express delivery ship or even tweak the stats on a Cobra just because you can. I'm a coder so if I was really bothered, I could actually have looked at the code for Oolite and done more. Let's just say I'm glad DB also had the same wants in an Elite game that I did.

That makes sense to me. I bought Space Engineers after reading reviews by people explaining they had over 1,000 hours in the game and could tell you in detail how terrible it is and how there's nothing to do.

Heresy!!!

I'm just playing with you, LOL.

I have far better things to do than surround myself with a group of people with nothing better to do than sit around moaning, groaning and complaining about a video game; especially one they refuse to quit playing.

In other news, DCS is having a 50% off sale on some WWII aircraft. I picked up the P47 for 25 bucks.

It's something like that for the most part I'd say, but I would suggest that there is another factor involved. If you consider the political arena and getting people to vote for their candidate, one can run a positive campaign or, if you know the other candidate is better, head down the negative road (or just do both as politics is DAF, but that's the end of what I'll say there). As to relating to Elite, well, a punter has cash to spend on a space game, which game gets their vote (or time)? The reviews and other aspects will influence that decision, so it's natural that some competitors might want to muddy that water a little and make the candidate they're most fearful of not look as good as their preferred one, especially if the two games appeal to similar tastes..

Of course, nothing like that ever happens in real life, and for bigger companies, using proxies or dirty marketing strategies as a cover would never happen either.. oh no... ho hum..

I'd still love it if it were single player - but as a kid, I dreamed of playing Elite with real people flying the other ships.

This is now a reality, and 12yo me refuses to not take advantage. Playing ED as a solo game, with open available, is just screwing over my own dream.

As always, each to their own. No harm no foul.
