Thinking about buying

Hey guys and gals I need some help here. I've been trying to decide whether to buy this game or not and there are some things I can't seem to find online(pardon me if there's a lot). Like are the expansions going to be free like EVE or do you have to pay for them all like the DLC system for most games. And is there a planned features area where I can see what they want to do with the game, like planet landing, fps combat, etc? Is it going to have a monthly fee or is it just one time payment then you're good to go? Also with it having 400 billion systems are they going to get a bit repetitive since they have to be randomly generated? Are there going to be more ships in the game with more interesting designs than just variations on a box or rectangle with thrusters? Can we pilot "capital" ship sized ships? Are all the stations in the game a cylinder with a slot entrance or is there some variety in that mix? And probably the biggest question I have is how much of a pain in the ass in piloting? I've already backed SC for example but I don't play it much because the piloting is a gigantic pain in the ass for me. I like realism but to an extent where I can still have fun. I guess the easiest definition would be kinda like warthunder if you're going for the ship following the cursor, kind of an arcade style I guess.

You have already missed the period for Free Expansions so you will have to pay for each expansion when it comes along. Things like Landing on Planets and getting out and walking around. Those are planned expansions.

I've tried the Thrustmaster-X, t1600 and the X52-Pro. Between voice attack and the customizability of how thrust can work a throttle isn't even needed. For price the T1600 is awesome, decent quality and Hall sensors. It will last unless you mangle it. I Use it as thrust in left hand when using eagle/sidey/viper and pro throttle for big ships and the pro for right hand. You could easily go with gamepad or kb for left hand though.

The X was good for the price, impressed with the stick which feels better than the pro even. Throttle not so hot but I knew that when I got it. Just wanted to try a HOTAS.

On a budget I'd go with T1600 and just use KB for throttle. Or even the slider on it that I use for sensors. Probably KB because I use my lateral/vert thrust in the eagle often. Hell if I wasn't lazy just the T1600 and some clever binding + voice attack (get it) would do.

Either why I highly suggest a magnetic sensor unit for purely durability and performance. After all, you buy too cheap and you go through 5 30's for every 65, ya dig?

I've heard lots of folks having good success with the T1600. I'd caveat any Saitek products just because of how poor their QC and support has been in the last few years; IF you get a lemon, it'll be pretty sour. If you don't then the Saitek is a killer stick and very SF. I run CH Products gear myself, super solid, but they're also in the higher end of the price range.

On mouse use... I am disables and have just the 1 working hand and a gaming mouse (19 buttons) and I find it suffices BUT I am keeping my eye on ebay for a joystick because I can see where it will be more appropriate.

Wow. 19 buttons!

If you're not already aware of the program you should check out VoiceAttack. It's a fantastic tool that allows you to use voice operated commands in the game.

Are there any nice joysticks that won't cost me my liver?

I actually use an XB360 controller and it's excellent for Elite, suits the arcade style of the game very well. It's clear to me that the ED controller interface has very much been designed with consoles in mind (probably a future aim for FD to widen their market) and that's one of the reasons the XB pad works so well. I did borrow a friend's X52 but I use an Oculus Rift and I simply find having the XB controller in my hand a far better proposition than a clunky HOTAS setup that I am never quite sure what is where. But, many people do use an X52 and love it in ED.

I think the XB360 controller is one of the best controllers ever designed and it works well with so many games, that I think it's the best value proposition and you don't end up with another wire on the desk if you have the wireless adaptor like I do.

There are some annoying things in ED around controls, such as common commands not being bindable to buttons, such as request to dock, but these affect all controllers and I would hope they deal with the current clunkiness of the UI before launch.

But I still advise to wait for some reviews of the actual released content, it's not long now. I seldom play the game any more, because it's simply too repetitive in its current form. The game is very 'old-fashioned', for want of a better term and some people may actually enjoy this; whilst it's got 400bn systems, the game is like a vast ocean that's only 2 inches deep. Yes, it would take you forever to cross it, but you'd never find anything hidden in the depths, because there aren't any - in current form anyway.

Just ask yourself what harm is there waiting for 22nd Nov when people will start reviewing and playing through gamma content, as gamma is pretty much what will be in go-live. If you like what you see, then you can make an informed purchase.

Is there any news on capitals or other huge ships? Example being the bengal carrier from SC. I have so say i'm a sucker for big badass ships like that, that you can pilot with friends or NPCs that are hire-able.

No. Not currently, maybe never.

It won't be available till the camping to interact with. And player controlled/crewed in the PU(persistent universe). They do have a corvette and a frigate you can buy but the prices are insanely high.

if youre the dayz player elite is for you. if youre the battlefield player - wait - try - watch videos.

if youre a space sim fan, this thread would not exist...

So how do you know if you like it or whether its essential to you enjoying the game? You might find its boring flying them.

We have capital ships but as yet they are NPC controlled, we may in the future be able to dock on them, but I dont think theres plans to let us loose in one.

The biggest ship we have so far is the Anaconda which is about 20 times the size of the smaller ships.

Heres a video comparing the two.

I think his conclusion makes the most sense.

Oh I don't, but from experience with other space sims being able to participate in battles with them or controlling destroyers in battle is an amazing thing. NPC controlled it kinda boring and scripted if i'm being honest.

Also if people don't have access to the Sol area by default will they not be able to go there without being federation or having the beta package?

Really.

If it wasn't for the Oculus Rift, ED would be a mediocre space game with end game of grind.

Well even with the Oculus Rift there is a lot of grind. Sadly the developers decided to opt for grind instead of content.

This might be rectified down the road when there is more intermediate modules and ships to be had.

The easiest thing to tell if you are going to like this or not is watch a ED twitch channel. Then watch it for 20 hours. If you still want to play after that then this game is for you.

Probably a few weeks too soon to come to that conclusion, plus content is something they can continue to add over time...

Plus, tried Neverwinter again and hate it for the grind that it is, Elite is much less so even in current form.

It funny that video dose not show the Anaconda or Lakon 9. Because they are also Large ships.

The other thing is Frontier is working to incorporate waking and planetary landing.

Can somebody explain this part a bit? "In Elite: Dangerous there will be areas of the game that will not be immediately accessible. Players may have to build a reputation with the governing faction in order to be given a permit to visit an area under their jurisdiction." I can't tell whether Sol will be a beta players only system that's essentially a lounge for them or what. Or if you have to be Federation to get in? Or even if you can "sneak" in and make the faction mad but maybe redeem yourself later.
