Anyone else getting better performance with update 15?

Not sure if its update 15, or a combination of the patch and a driver update.. but im noticing great things on my lower end machine for odd. In no particular order:

  • The texturing of everything looks better.
  • Faint stars in the skybox seem to have more integrity and are permanently visible.. there's barely any twinkle anymore.
  • Station interiors look better for the same reasons but are about the same fps. Strangely, this time around, im CPU limited (as expected) rather than GPU limited for the same fps.
  • In the tutorial, after the power comes back on there's much less fps hacked away. Its probably about 5fps better.
  • Critically, in the tutorial, after the dropship comes, my fps doesn't drop below 40.. its probably closer to 45.. and its finally playable. Im guessing there was something done impacting the problems when alarms are on at settlements.
And it seems they have fixed the planets in supercruise bug.. huge grin

My system: 1080ti, 2500k@4.1ghz, 531.41 drivers. Settings used were ultra from the dropdown, turned down spot shadows to high, model drawn distance to 50% of the bar blur off (i think). Sadly its not going to make unplayable hardware playable (my old 1060 id say still wouldn't be supported given the gpu and vram usage on the 1080) but, positive steps!!!!

Can't wait to get back into it over the coming weeks.

ps. still don't care about killing thargoids or gun upgrades. On my machine currently, if this was the launch build i personally could have handwaved a pass to keep doing space things in. Nice!!

If performance is better, I'm not sure we're allowed to say so in the forums. Forums are reserved for complaints and...

Certainly the worst of the jaggies are noticeably smoother.
I was wondering if there are new rock models. They still repeat but seem different to how I remember them while driving around.

Not sure I'm seeing any visual quality improvements or not as I'm using different drivers and different settings since the last time I really looked at U14. There are certainly still serious aliasing issues.

Performance may be slightly better in some areas, but I'll need to do some large settlement conflict zones to see if it's improved in any really meaningful way.

That sure is great news! I've read multiple reports of the game "feeling" smoother and looking better, and that's piqued my interest.

What resolution?

I'm curious how performance is in space in VR post-update (specifically for those like yourself running older hardware), and how aliasing in Horizons 4.0 (U15) in VR compares to Legacy.

I think I get much better performance in VR with U15. I have no hard data for it, but it is less twitchy, I get solid 90 fps and less reprojection more often. Planetary AX CZs and populated Odyssey settlements are still a bit iffy, but overall it seems much smoother.

New rocks are being added in the background all the time. (i do a lot of planetscan missions and travelling planetside)
(this was also the case during Horizons with the star features as it is now in Odyssey too: things get added all the time but you have to play to notice)

As to the OP, yes it does indeed run much smoother.
(still a little bit of lag load on nearing Odyssey settlements)

It is definitely feeling better. From being on the other side of the supported line until the end of last year.. i still would not suggest the old requirements have been finally supported.. my old gpu had 1000ish "processors", new gpu is at 3600 and just breaking even.. it also easily uses 9-10 gigs of vram. But that's just the gross conclusion, there are of course different ways through it for every setup, and you don't have to run ultra. Though you probably want to. There's a line that's sadly close to ultra which you need to make it worth it.. for the middle ground, my entire experience never left dramatically lower performance for visuals that never justify it. Ultra gets over the line if you can run it, ie, its actually new, upgraded, and hopefully functional.

My resolution is 2560x1600. I did try to turn it down to 1920x1200, but it didn't make a difference in fps on my machine (its cpu bottlenecked). In update 14, fsr made an amazing upgrade to the fps, but the visual quality was literally unplayable due to the antialaising. Having tried it on update 15 having said, will be tonights experiment. Also my monitors only do 60hz so thats all im asking. The majority of the game in update 15 is at 60, but dips back down into the 40's on stations, but this time carrying much more integrity than in the past.

While i appreciate legacy for what it is and how whole it is.. odd was always like that bit of bubble gum that hasn't been chewed yet.. regardless of when you spit it out afterwards, so any progress on odd i enjoy and welcome happily! We all have different priorities for why we play elite, and im one of those people who value visuals more than most i guess. Some people are happy for the gameplay and probably just dont care about the visuals.

I'm convinced the reason these perform so poorly is the AI code destroying the CPU. As I don't think they've touched this in an attempt to optimise it, I'd not expect these to be smoother.

CZs are really the most obvious here. Whilst the AI is chugging away doing its thing in the middle of the battle, my frame rate is always very poor but as soon as the battle ends and the AI stops all of its routines (and they just wander about high fiving each other), frame rates jump back up to what you'd normally expect in a low populated settlement (probably better actually).

To be fair, EDO isn't the only game that has bad frame rates with a lot of "bot" code running. This sort of thing, in similar settings (i.e. FPS games), is pretty common. It's a shame they can't optimise this stuff because I really like CZs but they're just so jerky I can't be bothered most of the time.

Same here. If ED 4.0 crosses that threshold, I could give up Legacy, assuming I can achieve similar results with my personal graphics mod. I might even invest in Odyssey. This update has definitely caught my attention.

I'm definitely a visuals snob, though there are things I prefer in 3.8 that other people think look better in 4.0, so it's all subjective. The nice thing about 3.8 is that I was able to customize it almost exactly to my liking - the lighting system, the skybox, star brightness vs sky blackness, etc. I don't know if I'll be able to do the same in 4.0 since some of what I did in 3.8 relied on very specific settings in the graphics config files, settings that feel like they would be depreciated in 4.0 (prototype lighting, for example).

Still, I'm happy that Elite is improving. Hopefully this trend (highly praised updates) will continue going forward.

Just in case, the live horizons client is the literal same files / install as odd, so you can check out most of it except for station interiors now.. not sure what happens for ground settlements, guess it doesn't matter if you can't exit your ship. Regardless its there if you want to try enhancing it.

Yeah me too. The traditional hook for me into pc gaming was the graphics.. before the ps3 and games developers flopping over to console (piracy and cost were the reasons i believe), watching graphics tech evolve was quite inspirational and seeing each new effect possible in engines and become more hardware accellerated was a joy in itself (especially because of how underprovisioned and unstable the drivers were, so much to tinker with). Yeah without something special the even digital experiences are about as stale as tv or cinema. Having played everything twice or three times i only play games for story or graphics.. or sandbox too apparently. Gameplay is for kids :p Except maybe street fighter.

Still, I'm happy that Elite is improving. Hopefully this trend (highly praised updates) will continue going forward.

I had no expectations. But unless you're a white knight, the mood for elite has always been set by frontiers patches and to a complimentary extent their community management, and yesterday we got a good one.

Just tried fsr ultra quality.. looks just a fraction worse than normal mode in update 14.

Looks like they have finally implemented anti aliasing, or fixed what was previously wrong with it.

The performance on my machine was getting very nice with it.. the gpu was nearly always not at full load while being cpu bottlenecked. The entire tutorial i could have turned off the counter and not even cared that much. Sadly the skybox returns to twinkle twinkle with fsr on, so to be consistent ill probably just keep it off until needed.

Very nice.!

This update brought me back to ED. I had been taking a little break. With U15, and a Humble store sale, I finally took the Odyssey plunge. USD 15.99, and since I was already a steam user for my main account, it all worked out.

The lighting and performance looks good. The AA (even with my Amd Rx 6800) looks better (not perfect) as well. At this price I can recommend.

After taking a closer look I can confirm that there are no appreciable improvements to either AA quality, nor GPU-limited performance, on my systems, with Update 15. Frame rate is the same and it's impossible to distinguish screenshots of similar scenes without looking at the version number.

Still need to test CPU limited scenarios, which is more involved.
