GALNET - THARGOID ‘HUNTER’ VESSEL CLASS CONFIRMED - 18 MAY 3309

So, potentially and probably unpopular opinion here… but it feels like the reaction to the Glaive’s introduction is an overreaction and unwillingness to adapt and respond to it as it is meant to be - a significant threat on the field, if in an unconventional way.

Who would take Glaives seriously in an AXCZ if they didn’t have the Guardian neutralizer field? It’s not even nearly as strong or disruptive as that of the Orthrus, giving you time to neutralize it before it fries the weapons. If something is qualified as a ‘Hunter’, I would expect it to be as dangerous as the name implies.

Maybe my view is just colored by generally not finding cheesy stuff particularly interesting, and preferring alternatives to it if they are viable. And I think gibbing interceptors instead of targeting hearts is, which the Glaive feels like a partial response to. And your six modshard Conda can probably still blast them right out into the void anyway.

Or, god forbid, you mount one or two regular AX weapons.

Shout ‘accessibility’ all you want, but Thargoid combat was also still meant to be end-game content. I personally think the Glaive fits into a niche of its own pretty well in that regard.

after playing for a while and trying to figure it out, you really only need one multicannon, hit them quick and hard, they do go down pretty easily, just have to watch out for other thargoids. i still think its stupid, but, adapt and overcome and such.

i really just want to enjoy the game, its one thing after another with frontier, thats my gripe. i was stuck for hours, logged and relogged, it wasnt until my buddy jumped in and helped with the hunters that i was able to escape the system and fix the issues in order to prepare my ship.

Balance does not mean "make every thing easy for every class of player". Yes, this is my version of a "git gud" post.

It is called "hunter class" for a reason. It is being deployed as a countermeasure in a war zone, not tourist spots. It ruffles the feathers of the cold orbit meta and forces us to adapt. It also means no more unarmed rescue paper planes. You go into the war zone, you better be prepared and armed.

The war is not meant for fresh CMDRs. All this time the so called veterans were calling out for "new challenges" and "something new for their endgame". There you have it.

I love the glaives. And I am a comparable newbie when it comes to AX, and would not call me a "veteran". It is a new challenge. Adapt and git gud. There, I said it.

Glaive's speed is 800 - 820 m/s, mass factor 20, reward 4,5 M.
So… the only human ships that can outrun them are ImpEagle (not Eagle, just ImpEagle) and Viper? And even then, paper planes?

I sense a new medium ship to counter Glaive, that tops out at 825 full g5’d… needle shape for minimal hitbox… full length medium pad profile… limited optionals, cold running, very light hull, very small internals, HUGE thrusters, very agile, 4 utils and 4x size 3 hardpoints for those axmcs… Boomslang? Basically just guns and engine.

This game evolves with the players, im glad there is a new challenge, i just wish they didn't lay it on so thick every time they fix other issues. Its like trying to pass a bill for healthcare and putting stipulations for gun control in it. Too much, slow down a minute.

740m/s on boost and you seem to balance.

Or faster and you can outrun. 787m/s

I don't think this story about Glaive's speed is so simple. I decided to do additional tests with i Courier, and first I used 756 m/s build, jumped around in Maelstrom Oya region to find the Glaives. And again - he was faster!! I jumped back to my FC, changed the build to 778 m/s, and jumped around again, spent some fuel and this increased my max speed to 789 m/s.
When Glaive interdicted me I decided to stay longer, to play the games, let's race! At first I was able to outrun him. When distance was about 6 km, I decided to slow down, to give him a chance. When he came to 3,5 km I started to boost again, and again, but this time, to my surprise, he was able to reduce the distance, slowly but surely. I had to turn to fly past him to gain the distance again, and then I repeated it for 15 - 20 mins, and results were the same - sometimes he was faster but not always. Therefore, I must conclude that his speed is not constant, but he is really able to reach about 800 m/s but can't hold that speed for long.
And there is always something to learn in this game - I didn't know that amount of fuel in the tank has such a big influence on ship's speed - I use 3C tank in this Courier, 8t of fuel, nominal boost speed is 778 m/s, but with about 40% of fuel it's 825 m/s, and with 15% fuel it's 850 m/s. Probably for bigger ships amount of fuel has smaller influence on ship's speed?

I completely agree, I always use Class 2 fuel tanks on my couriers. :)

I found a good analysis about enhanced performance thrusters, drag drives vs. drive distributors experimental effect, from 2018 in our forums https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/drag-drives-vs-drive-distributors-for-speed.405552/ , thanks to furrycat.
My goal is to have a Courier build for AX restoration missions, it means planetary vehicle hangar 2G, small be-weave, and to be able to reach little bit above 800 m/s to outrun Glaives.
I use EPThrusters G5 dirty with drive distributors, and my max speed is 851 m/s, I can't go faster even when I remove some modules to reduce the mass, but now I understand why, after reading furrycat analysis. Now I changed the build to 2C tank (I have fuel scoop 3A in case I miss the fuel) and my speed is 837 m/s even with planetary vehicle hangar. It's more than enough to outrun Glaives. So, this is one possible solution for those who don't like AX combat, but still want to do AX restoration missions.
Here's this build https://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial...5GY9IutehGR85w0TKvukMQEAAA==&bn=Strange Quark

Thankfully such a ludicrously OTT ship is never coming

It’s literally the glaive. It’s already here, just Thargoid. :) So, we counter with a ship in the same role (fast, offensive, low defence, low general utility).
About as much of a chance that would ever see the light as us getting to fly anything Thargoid.

Though I wouldn’t mind zipping around in a Glaive, just saying…

(Your counter to it is strap a bunch of gimballed or turreted multis on and have away.)
