Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

The part I enjoyed the most was how the modules change the look and configuration of the ship and how you can attach them and reinvent the ship yourself.

I like building my own ship in Space Engineers but love the design and artistry in Elites set ships but this seems like a unique way to incorporate some of both elements.
Not one of my priorities, but I digged the art style. I'm down to design ships for my liking when the style fit the game mood. Was a big part for me in Alien Isolation.

I disagree entirely, as someone who's played MMOs for 20 years :)

Also in Elite we've currently got a Buckyball race on, which is a time trial set over a week running the same course over and over again to improve your time. Bit like Single Player driving games, one you've done a track twice you've seen and experienced everything? ;)

But my point wasn't whether it was an advantage or disadvantage, just to emphasise that they're entirely different games.

Agreed, I mainly play MMO's, because the thing with MMO's is, even if you never see another player, you know everyone is sharing the same world (galaxy in the case of ED of course) and discoveries made by the player are discoveries shared with everyone. You can't have a first discovered/mapped tag in a single player game because essentially everyone is the first discoverer, and at the very same time no-one is the first discoverer.

In single player games the gameplay is the key to the game, in MMO's the world (galaxy) is the key to the game. Ok sure gameplay is important, but in single player games it's the most important thing. Doesn't matter what the world is like, if the gameplay is poor/bad the game will fail. But as we see with SC, somehow you can have poor to non-existent gameplay in an MMO and people will still play it and defend it like anything. The same with ED, a lot of people complain about the missions, some being broken, not enough variety, and in some cases I agree, but people still play it for thousands of hours.

I thought, rather famously, that everyone is not sharing the same galaxy in ED anyone.

No, the world is just as important in SP. The world is what story is for open world games. What doesnt matter is first discober tags, which is only good for MP for the dirst couple months then everything has been visited and discovered by player locust swarms and you get to visit the place 567 people already crapped in. Nah, it's not really a fun thing. Games are better off guving every player the impression if something unique and unseen.
The fomo train isnt something I enjoy - I like to play at my own pace.

Still first discovering, first mapping and first footfalling here, what game are you playing?

Didn't say the world wasn't important in SP, I said the gameplay is more important than the world in an SP game, you can have the most wonderful world ever in a SP game, but if the gameplay sucks then it will fail, but it appears from all evidence that game play can suck in an MMO and it will still be played.

What evidence? Is that addiction inducing mechanics? I cant see games being played massively when the gameplay sucks. There's gotta be another incentive.

If you are going to quote me in your reply at least use the same words, "played" and "massively played" are not the same thing. When you say massive I think WoW, "played" can be a lot less than WoW and still be viable for the developer to keep it going, like Atlantica Online.

A MMO is "massively multiplayer" and thus "massively played".

Another thing intriguing me was the dude who said he liked to do melee and then I saw they also have ragdolls. So whether by fisticuffs or ominous powers - I'd like to yeet enemies into the skies in melee.

How much freedom will Bethesda give to the players, to create their own stories and adventures in this new IP they created? Anyone heard anything about Mods?

To stay on topic, how much freedom will Bethesda give to the players, to create their own stories and adventures in this new IP they created? Anyone heard anything about Mods?
On youtube, you'll see a video marked starfield direct, which is around 45 minutes long. It's where they actually explain the entire concept of the game, what they've done with it, and yes mods will be available for people to put in. As explained, it will be Skyrim in space.

I originally just wanted to see a few minutes of that thing. I was locked in for the entire 45 minutes.

Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to get it on day one. No sane person ever buys 1.0 software. I always wait a month or two after it's released and read other people's reviews of where things went right where things went wrong and making assessment that way. I did the same thing for elite dangerous I and will be doing the same thing for this.

One thing I like about single player games is that you don't have to worry about gankers spoiling your day. There is one other really important thing that I like about single player games: if the phone rings you can hit the pause button and stop it from running. You can stop it right in the middle of something save your progress and quit the game if it's time to leave and go to work. :)

I never seen Elite as a MMO, I see it as a single player game where I play with friends and possibly some other player interaction?? BGS and power play could be NPC action ? If you don't do them . I couldn't instance with a PC friend and I couldn't land on their carrier even if I was friend ? And I think that's what causes some confusion, it has some small bits of everything but it's not quiet all there or implemented in a way . A jack of all trades but master of none . So SF being single player will be like me playing elite . I'm hoping SF takes the best bits of this genre and polishes it with finesse . Yes we have stellar forge ( Fdevs biggest plus ) but take it as a % it's very empty compared to a smaller amount of map with lots to do ? Just my musings. I dunno if I will pre order as there has been many flops of "new " stuff recently. But I'm looking forward to it . And will wait and see if I can beat my hours in elite .

As mentioned in the showcase Bethesda annocunced that their goal is to set the player free. That's what Bethesda RPGs are mostly about.
This is achieved by open world gameplay ,but also by creating a story where the individual is the center of the story.
So I believe that this kind of personal story is better setted in a single player RPG.
What I recognized in the showcase is that Bethesda adapted gameplay from already released space games and even improved some of that mechanics.
I truly believe that Starfield will set standards for upcoming future space games, when it's about base building or ship building f.e.
I enjoy ED. But lets be honest. One day people will move on as soon as there will be a new MMO space game, including a whole galaxy and all this gameplay mechanics that players wished for years in ED.

To quote Vasco, "It appears the Pirates of the Crimson Fleet are using the facility..." :geek:

So it seems the Nexusmods-Starfield-search-window virus has already gone pandemic. Ravaging Skyrim and the rest of Tamriel. Even the retro futuristic, post apocalyptic Commonwealth community wasn't spared as of this post. All these UI mods to replace the vanilla game's intro are already available and the game isn't even out yet

Disclaimer: These cosmetic/UI mods were made by some of the more devout SF fanatics in the Nexus modding community..And so appear to dance to the beat of their own drums..

But seriously, there's no need to worry. This irrational modding activity bodes well for the future. It shows the TES/Fallout modding communities--which are typically jaded with AAA releases—are uncharacteristically hyped this far out from release. And already thinking ahead about ways to improve the game.

ps: If you want to stay on top of the modding scene, it's best to join Nexusmods forums for whatever game you're playing. Nexusmods is one of the most popular discussion game sites next to reddit. The SF forum was created over the past year in anticipation of game release. Seems activity on it is starting to pick up as of yesterday.

I suppose it will be like Bethesda recipe. You get a campaign and story you can pick and it will guide you to places worthy to visit. Whether you do that or just go somewhere else is up to you. The problem is usually scaling of difficulty but I think they have that figured out now. Old Gothic game had OP enemies guarding chokepoints to funnel players through the open world, today it is a matter of spawning (or reloading and chalking off for later visitation).
Nothing heard about mods. Bethesda games are known to attract a rich community and many say the engine hasn't really changed much so that should mean decent mod support. But then we had "Creation Club" which was paid mods as idea from Bethesda - so unless Starfield isn't a real blockbuster expect to get nickel and dimed for something Bethesda didn't even move a finger for.
