Suddenly I don't see any first footfalls in the bubble - I used to and then figured maybe this was where settlements were, but also on unsettled planets (eg Dvorsi A1) it shows first mapped by but not first footfall. The same goes for Shinrarta Dezhra but also many less famous systems. What has changed or what have I missed?

FF was never allowed on any inhabited systems since the start of EDO, I recall CMDR.
Yep the Bubble systems are all considered as having been available for visit (by imaginary galactic citizens) for ages before the game time started, so first footfall is not shown.

Commander Thrust has actually walked on every planet in the galaxy. Even the waterworlds.
And the Gas Giants. And landed with a Panther Clipper.
They fixed the bug?
There was a bug where landable planets in the bubble, that could not get a first footfall, would trigger the 'First Footfall' animation to appear on screen whenever you landed and got out. These planets could not be claimed so the first footfall animation should never have been triggered. I supposed they fixed that issue at some point is what you are noticing.
When not possible to land the Clipper, CMDR Thrust was known to favour the Moray Starboat as an alternative landing craft.
