ChatGPT NPC Taunts

Perhaps Frontier could come up with some new NPC taunts like ChatGPT can to add or replace the stale taunts weve had for 10 years already! ;)

It's impressive that an LLM can come up with such, but let's be frank, the actual quality of these is mediocre at best. If a human writer wrote these, I'd tell them to write dialogue that real people would actually say, not forced stuff like "It won't last long against my firepower!", "Time to end this charade and prove my superiority!"

Considering the actual cost of running these though, a writer would probably be cheaper.

I think that's actually okay for the intended purpose - NPC barks are background noise, if they made actually witty and clever quips all the time it'd get distracting and exhausting. Not speaking like a real person might be fine too if it can be treated like movie dialogue.

That said these don't really add anything to the game and 10 or even 100 new lines could still get repetitive after a few thousand hours of bounty hunting.

If it could give you reactive comments about the situation you're in it could get interesting, but I'm fairly sure trying to make it go more specific (You're in a keelback chasing down a python, whats the taunt?) would reveal it's lack of understanding about the actual game and could just rely too heavily on the words in the prompt.

Yes - I always text someone before I punch them in the face.

TTS has improved so much from the game's release - it is time to drop the text threats and replace them with voice.

Don't like the voice, mute it.

And we should be enabled to set our own style of GPT generated answers as well. Like: Cool, sophisticated, or pre-teen humor.

(ED: Odyssey - Options - NPC chat style: In the style of Charles D1ckens, and dad-jokey.
Result from the real GPT:
" It was a fish of some distinction, for it had adorned its gills with a fine piece of silk, which it had procured from a haberdasher’s shop in the Strand. It swam about the Thames with an air of elegance and refinement, and was known to all the other fishes as the sofishticated one. ")

Would be great but voice generation is still new, I don't think any game has it. Can you see ED being the first?

Bit of variety into ChatGPT can help:

  1. Cutting Remark: "You know, the only reason you're in this sector is because every other system got sick of your incompetence."
  2. Angry: "I swear, if you come any closer, I'll blast you out of the sky and scatter your sorry excuse for a ship across the galaxy!"
  3. Flirtatious: "Hey, Commander, I have a proposition for you. How about we dock together and see if we can generate some extra heat?"
  4. Sarcastic: "Oh, great job there, Commander. Your brilliant decision-making skills are on par with a malfunctioning autopilot."
  5. Stupid: "Are you sure you know what you're doing, Commander? Because you're flying like you just escaped from a mental institution."
  6. Cutting Remark: "You're such a disappointment, I bet your parents programmed their navigation system to avoid your coordinates."
  7. Angry: "I'm going to enjoy watching your ship crumble into cosmic dust. Prepare for a world of pain, you pathetic excuse for a pilot!"
  8. Flirtatious: "Hey there, hotshot. I'm just a jump away, waiting for you to catch up. Show me what you've got, and maybe we can make some fireworks together."
  9. Sarcastic: "Oh, look who's here! The renowned expert in making terrible decisions. What's your secret? Blindfolded navigation?"
  10. Stupid: "You must have the intelligence of a malfunctioning AI. I've seen asteroids with more strategic prowess than you."

Just recently saw this, and it is amazing that this discussion should suddenly pop up today.

If this is the same one that I saw yesterday, it would show just how much more powerful video games could be in the future. If planets and such could be procedurally generated in this fashion, Elite dangerous could have been much more advanced than it is right now.

The problem is that Elite dangerous was started almost 10 years ago, long before this technology came into play. Had Elite been started today for development using this technology to create worlds on the fly and animals and creatures upon some of them we would have a game that is a mile wide and six miles deep.

Who knows? Maybe Elite dangerous 6 will be done with this kind of technology and we will have the entire galaxy open to us for wild entertainment. I'll probably be old and dead before that happens, but I wish you all well on your wild journeys.

ChatGPT is off limits for game dev. Steam has banned its use in any game they host in their store due to the cloudy legal nature of scraping copyright material for learning purposes.

Personally, I'm leaning much more into having a personal AI that interfaces with games using external hooks so there's no liability for developers and also allows limits on data collection/privacy issues that could arise from using an AI assistant in a game to be set by the user, not the vendor. The main issue I see with AI is who owns the information that the AI learns about you through interactions. In my opinion it should be personal and confidential.

ChatGPT is just the beginning anyways, and not always that good. I'm sure they'll sort out most issues in the years to come.
