Planet Zoo - 1.14.1 Update Notes
General Bug Fixes and Adjustments

  • Animals
    • Adjusted the Black Rhinoceros' head position
    • Adjusted the Black Rhinoceros walking animations
  • Scenery
    • Fixed a bug where scenery items looked low quality close to the camera
Massive thank you for these two changes! Especially the latter, the dev team was really quick in fixing this issue and it is massively appreciated ❤️

I am estatic and especially grateful that the Frontier team was able to fix the issues with the rig on the black rhinoceros. Looking at pictures of the beast in-game, it finally feels like the proper black rhino that I knew Frontier could deliver to us.

With that being said, I think there are some things the artists could do to make the animal truly amazing. I took the liberty of highlighting some of my thoughts visually

I think the model can be slimmed down a smidge, especially around the neck and chest. Then, the flap on the neck can be made much less visible as, when researching this species, they don't have the neck flap seen in their white cousins. I was going to initially say that, perhaps the torso of the rhino could be made a little short but the rhino photos I looked up seem to have a torso this long.

However, it must be said that I am quite proud of the changes made to the rig. Tbqh, I didn't expect Frontier to actually go back and make these adjustments.

I am happy about the Rhino changes, but seriously, why the Malayan Tapir has to be addressed yet?
What has the poor Tapir done to you Frontier? It's one of the most discussed problem on the Forum so i don't believe no one doesn't know the issue, it's stuck with wrong body and the purple tint since 2021, please do something... 😭

Thanks for the changes here! The rhino looks much improved and the burrow animation fixes are making the fennec fox and sand cat even more fun to play with!

Oh, and the widget speed controller is a really nice addition for detailed building! It's really been helping me get things tighter without things overlapping, nudging things ever so slightly, etc.

We hope non Malayan tapir, slow motion cloud leopard and dislocated okapi will get tweaked in the future.
Please Frontier. All three are among my favorite animals irl and the clouded leopard is the best cat model you have made yet the animal is barely unusable because of the bug. Will you consider fixing them please? 🥺

I believe that regarding the Clouded Leopard issue it was confirmed that the devs are looking into it, so hopefully soon:

Soon ™ 🤣

Ah, this brings back memories...those aware of the early PC days and its competition will know xD

Seriously, though, these things need fixing. Especially that reskin of a tapir that looks nothing like it should.

I want to start by saying that this is merely a possible explanation to why and I'm not here to give my opinion on this possible explanation.

From the looks of it does seem that Planet Zoo dev team has a specific time budget they can spend on each DLC. X amount of months to work on the development, x amount of weeks that can be spent on support on the (biggest) issues and bugs that arise during the DLC release and the remaining time that is left they spent on fixing known issues in their backlog (which is a huge list of known bugs, things they want to improve, etc.).

The reason why the rhino is now adjusted is probably because the feedback came right away and we're still within the time frame that is reserved for this DLC. We saw it with the dhole (which distorted in several animations) and the binturong (which got a big response on reveal) as well, as those were all done within a short window after the DLC, and also with the hyena in the Grasslands pack. I think these things are also only really done when there are no other major game breaking bugs that arise during this time frame, because something like the game crashing for a large amount of players would of course be a lot more important than an animal not completely being accurate.

Now it's clear from looking at previous updates that Frontier goes back and fixes issues from older DLCs as well. When we look at other fixes we get in those updates a lot of those seem to be centred around animations, interactions with enrichment, user interface changes and labels/zoopedia. Graphical changes are usually limited to actual visual bugs like flickering or black splotches on the models.

Wrapping up all that information we got so far:
  • There seems to be a time window in which actual changes to the accuracy of the model/textures of the animal are done. (Rhino, dhole, binturong, hyena were all changed in the first few weeks or days after release)
  • From this list of fixes and the lack of bugs specifically surrounding the new pack mentioned on the forums, servers and social media there clearly was time to spend on altering the posture and animations.
  • When it comes to older known issues, Frontier seems to prioritize them on the aforementioned attributes.
So the reason why the tapir is not updated (yet) and other animals from more recent DLCs were, is probably (need to stress that as we of course can't know for sure) because a) there were more pressing issues during the time window they could do it during the SEA release and b) Frontier at this point in time considers other issues of higher priority. Does this mean that they'll never fix it? Who knows, but clearly before that is possible other issues that they consider a higher priority need to be done first.

Development unfortunately doesn't have unlimited resources (I would love it if it had, even for myself 😅 ), so you got to prioritize stuff. Whether you agree with their prioritization here is of course up to you, nobody can decide that for you. I personally do understand that they go for the fixes they go for because it is reasonable to assume that for instance issues with animations are considered game-breaking by a bigger group of people than the tapir not looking accurate which is considered game-breaking by a smaller group of people.

Again, everyone is completely in their right to disagree with that prioritization, but I just wanted to point out a possible explanation to the "why hasn't the tapir been updated and other animals have" question. I hope it helps!

Can we please go one day without complaining about the damn tapir, frontier did something super nice for us they did not have any obligation to, show them some appreciation.

Big thanks to all the devs for this update, we love you all <3
Plenty of us have shown appreciation before making the very reasonable comment that if the rhino can be fixed then perhaps, given the sustained strength of feeling from the community, perhaps the tapir could also be fixed. Nothing wrong with that.
