Newcomer / Intro Miner's tool?

I have always just found a station that will pay more for my mined stuff than it cost me to get it, on the rare occasions that I wanted to reduce the chances of not selling I just used to look up on the now deceased EDDB now I suppose I would look on Inara.

Mining has basically only been a hobby so making more than 100% profit feels too much like work.

the miner's tool has already been available when I started, so I don't know a time "before". Personally, I have no issue with using 3rd party tools, so I don't even try in-game. When I go mining (I only go core mining for fun), I usually look on Inara what mineral is currently hot on the prices and look up a suitable hotspot near my position on edtools, or I drop randomly into rings and see what's what. When I'm done, I again use Inara to find the best sell price. Or I dump my mining load on my carrier to sell it later. Or never, because I don't need the cash anyway ;).

"Before" is a long time ago. Before miner's tool (or basically EDDN) was also before Carriers or before core mining (or - IIRC - before the "volume tax"). You could either sell it at the price you got, or you could look for a large population system with the right economy type in the right state.

Yeah it is a lot of work. But how else do you make money though. I'm sure you have billions and probably don't need to make money anymore to get stuff. I've been mining lately trying to get the billion or so to afford the corvette. I'm at about 400 million now. It takes about 3 hours or so make around 70 million. Do you know of any other ways to make that much in that time frame?

Bio scanning, even already discovered bio can give you up to 20m for 3 samples and if you go a bit further out new discovery bonus can net you 100m for one set of samples. Just look for the road to riches bio guides if you must, but I do think they are a waste of time, not that they won't get you money faster, but they tend to ruin enjoyment of the game for people who use them to grind up money.

Hello again Veronica, I think you mentioned this once before. Don't you need Odyssey to Bio Scan? I just have the regular Horizons.

Yes I now have billions and a Carrier however I started playing just over 7 years ago and didn’t get to such riches until a couple of years ago, mainly because I am interested in playing Elite not in how long it takes me to get things while playing. When for example I decided I wanted a Carrier I had an aim of getting enough money to get one just after they were launched that didn’t happen so I just kept doing stuff I liked until over a year later I had enough money thanks to a high paying CG.

I got my money by doing almost every CG that came along for years, but eventually managed to break the habit as I wasn’t doing much else in the game, but pretty much all my trading ranks and money came from them.

I have also done a lot of freelance bounty hunting again a lot CG based but very little mission based.

The longest part of getting a Corvette or a Cutter for me wasn’t getting the money it was meeting the rank requirement which involves doing some missions which I don’t like doing, actually the missions probably cost me more than the ships.

Yes Bio sampling is Odyssey only.

What do you guys think of the miners tool? https://edtools.cc/miner What did you do before this? I dunno the last one I had to just 26 times to sell my load. Seems like a lot. Is that normal? How would one find a place to sell without that tool?
All those sites are often out of date when you get there.
Ive built up a list of stations that buy my plat and use the in game system views which tends to be more accurate.

Thank you aRJay, but I'm not sure what a CG is. What's a "high paying CG?"

What do you mean by "in game system views"?
Ok i have trade routes around EV Lacertae (where i park if im in the bubble), lets take one of the stations i trade with - Ford City in Groombridge 34.
Once ive traded with that place, no matter where i am in the universe, if i click on Ford City (in system view) and select 'Market Information' i can select any products they are currently trading and get a buy or sell price which is normally very accurate.
So if say i have some Plat to sell from mining i can check every port within a certain radius (im not fussy about the best price miles away) to see who will give me the best price locally, just note that prices change depending on demand (if you rock up in a Cutter with 600 units and demand is say 300 you get a lower price).
Normally i will sell in blocks of 200 (trading Python) unless i just want to dump it fast.

I honestly just find this more accurate (some prices on websites are days old) and far more satisfying.

Just to note i play exclusively in Odessey so im not sure what the interface is like in any other version these days

Apologies I should have expanded that.

CGs are Community Goals* which are approximately one week activities where we are challenged to support a certain project or goal that some in game entity is trying to achieve. There are typically two of them running in a week sometimes in competition with each other where only the highest achieving CG gets to fulfil its aim sometimes complementary such as one where they want deliveries of commodities while the other is to hunt pirates to stop them interfering with the haulers.

CGs are normally broken into achievement Tiers and the more of those that the community reaches the higher the rewards all round, as an individual your reward is determined on where your efforts place you relative to all the other participants. Make a single delivery or hand in one bounty and you will get the lowest level of reward reach the top 75% the reward is higher, the bands are top 100% 75% 50% 25% 10% and top 10.

Sometimes the hauling CGs pay significantly over the odds for the required items leading to huge profits per delivery.

Thank you Very Much aRJay! I'll definitely be looking into CG's in the future!

Okay so I just pulled up that last place I sold my Platinum at. Yang Hub. But the list doesn't seem complete. There's no Plat. listed. What am I doing wrong? It IS a metal right?

Apology's im a muppet, using Platinum was a bad example and one where the in game system to a degree falls flat.
As Plat is not a tradable commodity (its mining only) it doesn't show up in the market info as there is no trade route.
For pure mining stuff i just keep notes on the prices i get on an XL sheet, this is where sites like Inara will help you except they can be days old.
As im a stubborn old git and pretend that Inara doesn't exist in 3309 i would just fly around my normal trade routes to find the best place to sell.
Normally the same station will give the same(ish) price like Lindsey Port in Atagat which ironically if you search on Inara isnt listed as very few commanders visit the place 😉

LOL awesome! Thanks Darrack! Maybe I'll see you out there one day!

What did you do before this?
How long before? When I started out in the game I wound up doing trade runs with a ship full of Imperial Slaves.

At the time it paid very well (about 3 million per hour as I recall). But those were different times.

Last week I earned 85 million in about 90 minutes doing pirate massacre missions.

I can routinely make a similar amount trading stuff like gold or agronomic treatment (it requires a large ship for that rate of return, though -- T9 or something).

Now even a relative newcomer can make, what did you say, 70 million in 3 hours? :)

Earning credits these days is very easy compared to the old days.

But to answer your question I rarely use miner's tool any more. I have a few mining spots I know well, and just go there.

Or if I'm out exploring and feel the desire, I mine in whatever rings I find (and do quite well -- but it does require a carrier to put the ore into, to bring back to civilization eventually.
