Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Yeah. Or you live in a neck of the woods where rarely someone posts about...
I would post about the stuff in my region, if it wouldn't be so awkward to do - find a scrap of paper and a pen, write it down, end the game, start the browser... You get the drift.

In my early Ody days I followed a couple of the sharing 'n caring thread tips but the items had already gone, so I didn't really use it after that. The ideal solution would be one that doesn't rely on manual updates, but I presume the revealed Pioneer stocks aren't available to e.g. Inara in the way that market commodities are.

My own setup is sofa/Shield TV/GeforceNow based, so copying to/from browsers isn't really a thing, I haven't even worked out how to get screenshots yet. I just use my phone if I need to look something up (or play a game of chess on the way to a planet 200,000ls out).

…so, yesterday, after five years & 5000hrs+ without, I finally installed EDDiscovery - proud moment! :]

Tbh I was hoping I’d install it and be greeted by a nice map of wherever I’d been the past 5yrs upon launching it - but apparently there is more to setup / configure… needs to be linked to EDSM for that map… something about an API key that I dimly remember reading in the dark last night…

Today’s project I guess… :geek:

Click on the down arrow next to your avatar icon in EDSM. One option in the drop down is "API key". You can use this key in EDDiscovery but, where you put it in Observatory... I can't find that atm.

I've been playing for, what, 16 months now, have found lots of untouched systems (though in no way do I pretend to be an explorer!), and have still not found a new ELW. Buckets of Ammonias and Waters, ELW nada.

Admittedly I have not been specifically looking for them, but had assumed one would have turned up by now. I occasionally have an urge to find a new system with one, map every world, set foot on everything set-footable, stick my carrier there and rename it to NO TRESPASSING.

Two days after posting this on the forum I discovered my first ELW. I'd therefore also like to point out that I have never won first prize in the National Lottery or been asked on a date by Scarlett Johansson. Thank you.

The maps are generated from the user data, you just need to add the 2D and 3D map option to the tabs from the apps management screen.

The API key is in the "settings" tab of EDDiscovery.

Double click on your CMDR name at the top and you'll get this:

I'm sure I've heard about Observatory before, but I can't remember. What does it do?

It intercepts the data going to the journal and tells you if there is anything interesting in the system, such as high gravity landable, terraformable etc, that's just the basic functions though. There are addons that help with scanning bio and other things you might find interesting. It's only a small program so best thing is to check it out and see if it would be useful. For me personally, I wouldn't play without it now it's available!

One of the best things I've found with it is the distance announcement for bio samples which really helps seeking the diversity requirement.

OK cool - making progess, thankyou's!

...API Key is in & EDD is linked to EDSM - now we seem to be uploading a bit of data^

i'm just going with "send everything", even though it seems to keep prompting me to reconsider...

...after this is done, where might i go in EDSM to see where i've been? :)

In a way like EDDB does, I guess...

My main problem id that I regularly forget to activate these programs before launching the game...

Meanwhile i found two WW's this AM - one has a terraformable moon... so, with a bit of work, this place could be really great - enough space for summer / winter homes as well as a holiday house? :]

I never used it either, for the same reason. But I was able to find tons of stuff just by looking myself. I chose mostly planetary ports, and took an Apex everywhere. It was easy and relaxing and I got all my G3 gear that way.

You just have to open the 3D map tab. It's all there. You don't need EDSM for it (although you may want EDSM for other things).
