Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

I didn’t get into zoo games until only a few years back.

I built zoos in Minecraft, but felt there could be more. I got a few mobile games which are pretty trash, and then got ZT3. The first edition, not Ultimate. It was okay, very boring and pretty bland animal selection. Then last December I got Planet Zoo, and it is the best by far.

  • My memories of Zoo Tycoon 1 are probably grander than the game actually is... I remember great plant diversity and many animals to choose from. I loved that game aside from being 2D, and the nitpicking about biomes in the animal enclosures. They released an animal editor that I played around with when I was older.
  • ZT2 was fun for taking pics, actually taking care of animals and the 3D. But the base game was kind of boring in selection of animals. The Expansion packs made it fun!
  • World of Zoo I liked because it was about taming animals. You really cared about them more than any other zoo game. PLUS you could make a blue tiger if you wanted haha. Obviously geared more towards kids...
  • Never played ZT3 but I actually like the multiple subspecies idea. Not to the extant of 10 of the same animal but more like a compromise of ~3 tigers, 2 lions, 2 or 3 giraffes, 2 or 3 zebras etc... Just because zoos irl have multiple types of zebras to choose from.
Planet Zoo is the best zoo game imo. My memories of nostalgia just make other games seem better...

I played both zoo tycoon games growing up. I liked ZT2 better. I thought the pacing and management was more fun with ZT2. I liked being able to walk around the zoos and take care of the animals. The challenges were often appropriately challenging.

I liked the chaos of ZT1. Setting T. rexes loose to reenact Jurassic Park was fun. Also, building otherwise normal zoos and placing unicorns in the middle was hilarious. I liked the scenarios.

I only bougt ZT3 recently because I saw it on sale. I realized that many forum members were attached to some of the roster from that game and I wanted to understand why. The grind was unbearable, especially with so few options for constructing habitats. I actually liked the open-air mini exhibits. That is the main thing I wish could be brought to planet zoo.

Planet zoo is very fun for a building simulator. I love seeing what community builders can come up with. The animals are amazing, and I love trying to get the variants.

Honestly people say this a lot, but to me it's like...why not? Why not have every subspecies of brown bear available? Every tiger? Every giraffe and flamingo and chimpanzee?

I'm not suggesting these animals take up space in DLC rosters or whatever, but IMO maximum diversity would only be good. The main drawback would be slogging through the animal market and Zoopedia but the search function on both negates that anyway.

I would absolutely love it if I could cater subspecies to whatever region I'm playing in. You're far more likely to find a Eurasian brown bear in a European zoo than a grizzly, for example, and in Oceania the tiger of choice is Sumatran while the giraffe is the Nubian/Rothschild (depending on what taxonomy you subscribe to), whereas in other places it might be the Siberian tiger and reticulated giraffe. Same with zebras; yeah, plains zebras in their various forms are more common overall, but a lot of zoos stick to the Grevy's for its conservation value.

The perfect roster would be the amount of unique species in PZ along with the absurd diversity of choice in ZT3.

The lack of DLC room and slogging through the animal market and Zoopedia is honestly the only reason I wouldn't want all subspecies of all wide-ranging animals. I think it'd be awesome to have as much variety as possible.

Easy to make clones I can think of off the top of my head:
Timber Wolf -> Arctic (already in-game!), Mexican Grey, Red, Iberian, Eurasian, Himalayan, Eastern Timber, Eurasian Tundra, Desert...
African Buffalo -> Forest Buffalo
African Crested Porcupine -> Cape Porcupine, Indian Porcupine
American Bison -> Wisent
Amur Leopard -> Javan, Persian, African
Bengal or Siberian Tiger -> Sumatran Tiger
Dingo -> New Guinea Singing Dog
Meerkat -> Dwarf and Banded Mongoose(s) (not sure of the plural on this one haha)
Red Fox -> Kit Fox, Corsac Fox
Striped Hyena -> Aardwolf?
Gazelles come in many variants! etc... etc...

If they dont take away slots form other animals sure give me 9 jaguar subspecies. But otherwise 1 jaguar is more than enough for me, especially since most of them are barely indistinguishable anyways. Same goes for the rest of them.

The Zoopedia issue could be easily solved by just listing it as "Jaguar" or "Brown bear" and if you click on it it expands to show the subspecies. But yeah the market would be a nightmare.

The whole species vs subspecies thing is quite confusing (especially since scientists themselves keep changing it)

My preference would be to have species themselves, especially if the subspecies are barely distinguishable between each other, and have different patterns/styles to kinda sorta represent each subspecies.

Then, have subspecies for only certain animal whose subspecies are radically different, like gray wolves. I wish that the timber wolf would be properly renamed to the northwest wolf, as it looks and is from north North America

To be honest, I'm personally more interested in future updates. Assuming we have only 2 more DLC and 3 updates (including the anniversary), what could be added? What could be done?

Last few updates, while ok, have been overall kinda lackluster and don't add much unless you're a content creator, like Leaf, Old Country, DeLady, and Zoosaurus.

But not much has been done regarding the animals and the creativity to design zoos. Last big thing, in my opinion, was the update to brachiation, allowing gibbons (and only gibbons, no other primate, unfortunately) to use this locomotion on vines and ropes, now.
The spitting camelids was a nice touch, but only 3 animals can use it. The animal chorus behavior only has 3 animals and hasn't been updated since it was introduced.
Deep diving could be added to tapirs and maybe elephants and hippies (EDIT: hippos🤣), but it hasn't been done.
What about "reverse engineering" the enrichment, allowing the animals to use the newer enrichment objects, such as the hammock, underwater plant feeder, and termite mound?

You never played the original Zoo Tycoon? Man that game was just the best.
I started with ZT2, and played it quite often. Marine Mania was and still is the best expansion for the game (although my favorite theme was always the Endangered Species theme).

Then I played ZT1. I liked it, but not as much as ZT2.

I've also played World of Zoo, which is more of a zookeeper sim than a zoo sim, and aimed towards a younger audience, but it was very cool to make custom animals and connect with them. Wii version is the best one.

Growing up I also played a few mobile zoo games (Wonder Zoo, for example) and also Facebook zoo games (I literally had a Facebook account only to play the games, and since I was still very young, I had multiple Facebook accounts to have "fake" friends so I could make myself progress)

For other animal games, SimAnimals was the bomb (the Wii version), as well as playing SimSafari
