Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Ray edited his post

EDIT: Wanted to add some clarity as it seems this has blown up far more than I anticipated and certain trends emerged through comments.

A) Everything here is my opinion, not necessarily facts. They are what I feel now as a Backer having seen both sides. Any time I spoke about the project in the past, it was internal, not external. I gave my feedback so that it was best used, not putting my feedback on the net in the hope it was caught.

B) My post isn't to stir drama or cause issues for CIG. It is a recollection of my experience and what I believe we as backers can do to ensure that the ball keeps rolling in the games' development, getting features complete to a high standard and rolling them out not in a fireball so everyone can enjoy it. I hope that it helps push prioritizing certain elements.

C) I loved my ENTIRE time working at CIG. They treated me very well, and by no means is this a post to say they did not. I could name 100+ people I personally interacted with who were fantastic on every level, both personally and professionally. They had my back no matter what, and I cannot and will not fault them for that.

D) There may or may not be a run of layoffs at CIG. As a person far removed from the project now, I have zero idea, but the post I saw on LinkedIn suggested as much. This made me upset - I know a lot of good people that will be affected if it is the case, and there are only so many things you can point a finger to as to the 'cause', two of which are over-estimating and over-extending, which is what I personally believe has happened (Again, NOT a fact, just my opinion). This viewpoint is gained through my experience.

E) I've had plenty of people reach out to me both internally and externally. Beyond this post I will not be commenting - I do not want to stir up 'drama', I just want progress (As we all should do). If this helps towards it, great! If not, no sweat, I tried.

End point: Please be kind to one another. I've already seen negative comments against my character and CIG. It's expected, but just want to make sure in this day and age we debate and feedback in the right way and take care of each other rather than grabbing miniature keyboard-shaped pitchforks and doing some online stabby.

Seems he is indeed legit. Suppose he must be under some kind of NDA but that doesn’t seem to be affecting his posting though.

Also, hiring freezes? That is interesting as CIG has always conveyed the message they are in a constant growth state in all their comms. Freezes also don’t jive well with alleged record breaking funding year after year.

If people try and say i hate SC, i'll laugh. I don't hate SC, its not a bad idea at its core, if not its implementation. Another good space game would be welcome.

I do "hate" CIG, although its too strong a word for it, due to the many many reasons we have discussed here in this thread. CIG was meant to be better than other companies that we see in the gaming industry. Instead they became what many of us hate about the modern gaming industry.
There isnt really much substance to hate in SC since it's so bereft of game. And the "will be" content (that will in about 95% of cases not appear at all) is neither hateworthy. What we do nit like and condone is all the lies about future content, "tech" in development and imaginary staff, the cheap excuses, the doublespeak and the general misinformation, upselling hot garbage, dishonesty, fake progress reports, unauthorised absolutions etc.

2023 is a turnaround year it seems.

The same guy that claims CIG develops "tech for generations to come"? - they must be pretty deluded on the inside as well.

That reminds me of something…

Oh yeah, that thing! 😁

The term hater has been used in many situations to denigrate and belittle people opposed to a particular point of view. In the end if the argument gets down to that level it simply means there is really very little else available to be used in defense. It's not a level I tend to stoop to if I can at all avoid it, there's no point in joining them there, it gets you nowhere.

Oooof

To your point, Ray, developers, and QA for SC are amazing people, very talented. I will say from experience that I recently interviewed for another studio, and I could see the apprehension from the executive producer because I worked at CIG. Needless to say, CIG is a stain on my résumé. Talking with executive leadership in another company, he literally responded, "Wow... you worked for CIG!? I'm sorry." What are current and past employees supposed to do with that? That's the perception of CIG. It's a laughing stock and butt of the gaming industry... it hurts.

I do feel sorry for devs who took a job at CIG because either they believed in the dream or they needed to put food on the table, only to find their resumes are now tarnished because of it.

Also, he's getting downvoted. I guess the faithful assume its all lies and a "hater" account.

The guy sounds butthurt he was fired.
"...but as soon as I found out I was being laid off, I looked at everything differently."

It's just me, but I feel like he's over valuing himself
"instrumental in setting up some of them (departments)".

He worked there for 7 years. 7 years where CIG developed a pattern and only now after he was fired are there problems and they could do better with him? If he had been telling them all along not to do stuff like that then they rightly fired him because he didn't fit with the company's ethos, but to keep him around for 7 years? One of his example was his opposition to the Cutlass Steel pricing, gives a date to how far his disgruntle went yet all was good until he was fired.

It reads like it's from someone who is a non-technical middle manager.

"Prior to CIG I was a 9 year Customer Experience professional in digital media - I managed the entire pipelines from sales to CX to post-sale support and loved my job."
So he's probably in the department that was responsible for what he said was the issue, over pricing, drip feeding their customers etc.

Asked about expereince at CIG
"The collaborative effort working with some industry professionals is something ton shine a light on. When you had an idea and they bring it to light, its nuts."
You can read this a few ways, but what I see is CIG went to a sub contractor to do something CIG had no idea how.

All the talks of, office decoration budget, fun and summer BBQ just makes CIG spending look less justifiable.
