Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

You know, I was seriously considering buying star citizen a year or two ago, but then read where it is multi-player only and I killed that thought process right then and there. Looking back, I think my decision was a good one.

Under two hours now..... šŸ•”

Yeah i never did either. I was never inclined to fall for crowd funding anyway, and even in the first few months of the project, they spent an uncomfortable amount on marketing and set up a studio with international offices.. this didn't seem to match the spirit of funds obtained via literal charity / begging. So i've always been waiting for the game to release to buy it, seems that path saved a loss as well.

I think it was in the ACG review, commentary that you can fast travel from everywhere, even without the boarding/interacting with the ship. But happily, this is optional.

It's almost the same as some parts of Odyssey. I don't NEED to visit the Concourse and Inter-Astra to swap ships. Or to walk up to an NPC to pick up a mission. I don't have to take a seat in the bar lounge before logging off. But I have always enjoyed doing so.

The little spaces in Elite where I can enjoy being a "CMDR" instead of a ship (if that makes sense). It's optional, but the atmosphere is there to enjoy. Yes it means I'm playing Elite a bit more slowly. Some things take a couple minutes longer than the faster ship UI allows (faster to the point of perhaps not even ever seeing any Odyssey content in a play session!) Sounds crazy, maybe.

But it's about the ride, for me. Glad to hear Starfield is giving a few choices to enjoy the ride it offers.

Speaking from experience...you definitely dodged the bullet there :D

Everyone who has Starfield Early Access, have fun exploring this side of the galaxy! I'm going in now.

Update: this game is beautiful. Lots of attention to detail. I got all settings on ultra, smooth FPS, 2560 x 1440 (PC version). I can't see my feet when looking down though. Loading times are very short: when climbing the ladder in the ship = 1 second, flying from the surface to space = 1 second.

Played through the intro segment on my HTPC. Aside from the rather glaring paucity of dynamic illumination, performance and IQ are about what I was expecting. Using a 5800X and a significantly undervolted 6800XT I was averaging about 100fps in the mine and 70fps on the surface with 4k, high quality presets, and 67% resolution scaling with FSR2. FSR2 quality was fine, with no obvious upscaling or motion artifacts. At 50% sharpening (default was 70%) everything looked crisp enough without any blatant over sharpening going on.

Captured a few videos, but they were unworkable due to me trying to use OBS' included AMF HEVC plugin, which is still trash. So, I'll need to dig out the third party plugins I was using when the 6800 XT was in my main system, reconfigure FFMpeg, or install ReLive.

Gameplay wise, I haven't play enough to comment yet, other than to say that the inventory system is cumbersome.

When I click on a first aid kit on the wall, is it added to my inventory or consumed?

Exiting the ship after landing takes less than 1 second.

Figured out my encoder issues. Nothing especially wrong with the OBS plug-in, I simply forgot that the CQP values scaled differently between NVENC and AMF, causing me to use about ten times the bit rate I wanted. Uploading a quick test video now.

Anyway, there is definitely no true HDR support, at least not anything accessible via the in-game settings, but that's not unexpected. The game also has about two full frames of latency by default, so AMD users should benefit from enabling anti-lag (NVIDIA's low-latency mode doesn't work in D3D12 apps without Reflex support). Testing now.

Edit: Anti-lag only knocks off about 5ms of app latency, but no reduction in frame rate or any frame time consistency issues with it on, so I'll leave it.

Inventory.

I'm loving SF so far, the planetary environments are stunning with ultra settings.

Travel between star systems is very quick, I barely noticed a fade to black (PC version).

Does my character run by default? Because CO2 goes down quickly (red).
How do I scan a ship?

Shift (or whatever you have bound) sprints and I think it's hold, not toggle, by default. So, no.

I think my character runs as the default setting. Nevermind, I was over encumbered.

Where are the photos saved?

Delightful stuff so far and about what I expected with some upgrades to the usual shtick. Smooth sailing my first night with the game and no bugs. Good performance. Some really lovely work with the assets and clutter.

Not annoyed with what the game isn't and will enjoy what the game actually is for a nice long stretch, then periodically revisit it to check out new mods just like I do for all their games since Morrowind. There's just so much you could do here, I figure it'll make for more mods than FO4 but less than Skyrim. So painful no official VR port will be created and already bracing for the bad performance I'll put up with with janky VR injectors.

Glad I've got a nice long weekend and already dreading returning to work... Also, it makes me feel a bit cheated we didn't get more space rpgs the past 25 years.

That’ll be one of the first mods I’ll be looking for!

Talented modders did it for Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallout, and along with a mod for footprints will be my personal requirements for the ā€œArmstrong momentā€ in SF 😁

(I still look down in SkyrimVR and watch my digital feet leaving prints in the snow etc. - it never gets old)
