Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

I’m choosing not to believe in anything, building myself up hoping for a game changing dlc will likely just get me disappointed over something I made up in my head. A lot of people are thinking temperate pack next, but who knows what it will be. Last year it was Wetlands, to Conservation, to Twilight, to Grasslands. So while temperate is realistic, don’t be surprised if Frontier mixes it up again.

Would I love 1 (or more) birds? Sure. Would I love more reptiles and amphibians. Definitely. Would I love new world monkeys. Of course. But getting into my own head will likely just make me predict wrong and then get mad over something that wasn’t going to happen.

I hate to say it, while there definitely was valid criticisms, I think that is what largely created the negative response around the Arid Pack.
I'm trying not to go too crazy with expectations either, but I'm failing lol. Not expecting birds though I'd be thrilled if it was that. Am expecting something with the Tasmanian Devil, so I will be surprised if we don't get something with that. There's nothing to give even a shred of evidence of what could be coming, aside from the fact something is coming. Also I have ot remember Frontier is not obligated to have to put any particular animals in the pack or even game. Tasmanian Devil is certainly extremely likely but they don't have to include it.

@Mayki I don't think the Arid pack was the most negatively received DLC so far - I think the people who had complaints about it - myself included - were just very "loud" about it.

Now for what pack I do think got a very lukewarm reception was the Twilight pack. One fairly highly requested animal and a lot of disappointment that the Red Fox could have been the Maned Wolf (a moot point now) and the Striped Skunk could have been the Tasmanian Devil; or at least one of the two should have been changed out. It also had its scenery set be very niche in terms Halloween/spooky theme and also a more extreme branch of European architecture.

For me, I'm able to speculate/hope/wonder about what's coming and ponder the possibility of it being something bigger than usual... And still not be disappointed if what we get is more of the same. Because "more of the same" is still really awesome! There's no harm in hoping for more, IMHO, so long as you balance it out with a "but that's probably not going to happen." Optimism and realism aren't mutually exclusive! But I get how not everybody feels the same way as far as what will or won't disappoint them, be considered a good pack, etc.

That said, as far as the Arid pack goes, I feel like the reason it got the response that it did was simply because the update features didn't add anything to the gameplay (though, TBH, the camera tools are pretty sick) and the animal roster was too ungulate-focused for certain players coupled with fears that support/DLC would be ending soon... I don't think it's a bad pack at all, I just think it was a perfect storm.

Not so much as prediction as a wishlist, these are my hopes for the next two packs and looking beyond into 2024.

Autumn 2023

Woodlands Scenery pack
North American scenery and construction pieces for log cabins. More shops and food stall options.

Elk
Wild boar
Tasmanian devil
Sloth bear or tree kangaroo

WE: Red squirrel
or
E: Box turtle

Free update: American black bear

Winter 2023

Highlands / Mountains animal pack

Highland cow
Serow
Pika
Tibetan sand fox
Markhor
Wolverine
Snowshoe hare

WE: Snowy owl

2024

We've had region themed packs and biome themed packs, so next I'm hopeful for species-themed packs:

  • birds
  • primates
  • marine (no cetaceans/baleens)
  • farm animals/waterfowl.

Free update wishes: Aviary construction pieces and more exhibit options to allow for aquariums. Petting zoo pieces with more walkthrough gates and animal feed. Transparent and curved bridges. Better water placement mechanics.

Was the Arid Animal Pack the most negatively recieved DLC so far? To be honest it feels like so far the 2023 DLCs haven't been as liked... I wonder how Frontier are going to do future DLC after this.
It depends on who you ask. I think Twilight, on the whole, was received more poorly at first (potentially more so) but people eventually softened on it when they discovered that not all of the pieces were hyper-themed. The bats helped with that as well too, I think.

I still can’t come up with an idea why they would announce the livestream a week early. No teasers in the past 3 days and they usually don’t announce anything of the weekends. Somethings gotta be up 👀
As much as we love to find patterns in the way Frontier works, the truth is that they have always found the way to surprise us and break the patterns we had found. After all this time, I feel that Frontier always do what they want (and this is good, it's clear that the team has fun with the game and enjoy their job).

The "3-day marathon" is the only thing that's giving me any pause. The timing feels too conspicuous. But I don't think it necessarily means that we're in for anything bigger or different. Just that they want to be sure they can reference whatever is coming in the report.

The extended "wait" between announcement and the stream itself could be any number of factors that none of us will ever really know. Haha. (Though I do think it has definitely increased speculation, caused more chatter, etc.)

Based on review positivity percentages from the steam store pages
  • South america at 66 percent positive
  • Arctic at 72 percent positive
  • Australia at 74 percent positive
  • Arid at 78 percent positive

I may be overthinking but I kind of feel like the South America pack got hit real hard on the negative. Many people were not expecting the DLCs to be that small and were quite disappointed. After that, there was the pattern that the DLC would be smaller groups of animals, and there was less surprise.

I give the Arctic pack a pass on the size of the DLC since it came out a little over a month from base game launch. Maybe people saw it as I saw it at the time: a theme and handful of animals that they were working on for base game release, but finishing would have meant delaying the base game - instead, they were the "last minute additions" that almost made it in the base game - a lot of games have a small DLC release with or soon after launch. Little did we know at the time that this was actually close to their standard DLC model.

Yeah same here, the majority of reviews complain about the lack of diversity for south america. Which is completely understandable and is still one of the biggest issues with the game.
I mean, yes and no, because if they want it to be more diverse, they should just get the DLC😅

"Man, SA is lacking animals. Instead of buying a DLC to fix that, let's complain about the DLC"

I think its meant to say there wasnt enough animals in the dlc.
Yeah that's the main problem, this was earlier in the dlc releases with many expecting large diverse dlc packs. So many of the reviews state $10 for 4 animals seems far too high for what it offers or general not a fan of the scenery pieces we need more animals. The good thing I think is the backlash of this and others like the Australia pack lead to the animal packs which kind of settled the general outrage of lack of animals.
