Tips on gaining mercenary rank?

If it's mercenary rank you're after, the simplest way is getting your gear sorted for high ground CZs (just ignore it before that point). The progress bar went from crawling along before that point to whizzing by.

It's the difference between finding maybe 10-12 scavs at 10,000 each in a single area if you're really lucky to a single CZ having around a guaranteed 100 CZ NPCs+ at an average of 75,000 each (something like that based on the 10 million+ I pick up per high CZ).

And finding the CZ that works for you. Once you know the mechanics of where the enemy drops in, and keep them off unclaimed points, you can do really well - they are attracted to them like wasps to sugar and your kills go up.

I'm regularly getting 13-14m per high CZ. I think my record was 15m but I do know some folks making 17m. Even at Elite, that's enough to visibly move the progress line.

I do hate enforcers though. Nearly as bad as sharpshooters.

True, once you've figured out how the NPCs will act it gets a lot easier and 10 million per CZ is on the conservative side.

But yeah, anyone who has to respawn in a high ground CZ has probably got there because a sharpshooter or enforcer one shotted their shields off, followed up immediately by a second enforcer giving them the rocket enema.

To add to the necrosis...

Do assassinations move your ranking? Or is it just CZ grind?
Any kind of on-foot kill counts.

If you pick an assassination mission, it counts.
If you claim a bounty, it counts.
If you get kills in CZs, it counts.
If you shoot someone just because they were rude to you, it counts.

As someone who has Elite V in Mercenary, a lot of my ranks popped up outside of CZs, while massacring the innocent for BGS. Not sure which one moves the bar faster though, but even if probably CZs, don't discount wanton murder just yet. Dual Rocket Launchers with Pocket Reload might trivialize too much, but blasting someone while looking down on them while flying full speed towards the next target is fun in itself. Remember to stow them before running and jumping so you keep your running speed while in the air for some fast movement while shooting and cool points (Elite doesn't track those, sadly).

It's credit based so if they don't have a bounty you get didley squat.

As per thread title, anyone got hot tips for increasing this rank? I know the usual exploration/ combat/ trade are kinda ridiculously fast, but mercenary, I've:
  • cleared out multiple settlements
  • done lots of foot- based missions
  • cleared 6 low intensity czs and got 1m in bonds
  • done multiple missions to clear scavengers

... but I'm still like 20% into defenceless.

As a contrast, I've successfully sampled one xenobiology thing for any 120k, and I've progressed further than i have in mercenary rank.
Combat, ridiculously fast?... And for Exobio, wait until you're Elite, then you'll see...
