Matschie's Tree Kangaroo do look like they are naturally smiling. Sort of in the way a teddy bear works. Quokka, I would say they are known for full on laughing as opposed to just smiling.

This is probably reading into this way too much, but Lydiah did say the 4th mocktail looked like a costal rocks or something. I don't think she would intentionally hint at the theme by saying that, but the word costal might have popped into her head to describe the drink due to the DLCs theme.
They explicitly showed viewing bubbles for habitats and the orangutan being able to brachiate.
They made five cocktails. There’s near-unanimous agreement that two of them represent the Tasmanian devil (a spicy drink with chili “horns” on the glass) and kiwi (just a whole lot of kiwi fruit). Then there’s one that was called the Sunshine Smile and had a fruit rind “smile” as a topper - general consensus is quokka, but some people say Sulawesi crested macaque, tree kangaroo, or even walrus. I don’t know why, honestly. Next was a blue slushy ice drink with an orange topper called the Cerulean Pebble. They used the word “hop” I believe twice during that presentation and likened its appearance to a rocky shore - to me that reads as rockhopper penguin, but I think little blue penguin is the more popular interpretation. Lastly was the “Citrus Blissom”, a mango drink which was topped with flower petals. Lorikeets, hummingbirds, and orchid mantis are the prevailing guesses there.

Honestly I would have bought the pack in a heartbeat if Tree Kangaroos were in it but it doesn't seem like it so I'll wait for a sale to even consider.

Quokka was definitely chosen over it, because animal itself is cheap and effective. As you said internet is full of smiling quokkas.

When has this happened before? I can’t think of a single time where we as a community have been genuinely blindsided by something that was explicitly hinted towards in a stream.
Actually, I realized the answer to my own question, when people (myself included) widely took the “spectacled” hint to be towards the bear and not the caiman. Still, that’s just one instance.
I seem to remember almost EVERYONE thought the spectacled caiman was a spectacled bear from their hints - and thus the pack would be South America, rather than Wetlands.

I mean, there have been more than a few things hinted at during past livestreams that people thought were shoe-ins based on the hints that were just... Wrong. From overarching themes to specific animals. For all but maybe the one drink (devil) there are maybe 2-3 other options that are at least somewhat reasonable depending on what the pack theming is.

Well, the Kiwi drink was pretty obvious too tbh.
I don't know how much more on the nose you could get than shoving kiwi fruit all over the top of a drink.
They aren’t known for smiling. That is not the aspect of them Frontier would accentuate for a hint like this, full stop.
I mean Quokka would be the typical "oddball", coming Out of nowhere. Little Blue Penguins is the typical Clone but it is okay for me. It Just Looks completely different to the other 2 Penguins we have. And after having a "warmer" climate and a colder climate Penguin it is also good to get a Temperatur one. Still hope for the Tree Kangaroo after I have Seen them the First time one month ago, but Quokka is fine for me, too. Zoos are also living from the very tiny animals. Looking Forward to both announcements.
