Getting shot at during retrieval missions

Hi Folks,

I did some retrieval missions at crash sites and often I'm shot at. Once I drove to the site in my SRV and got shot at and lost the SRV.

Last mission I did in my Diamondback Explorer with Beam Laser, two Missile Silos and double Vehicle Hanger with two Scorpions. I approached the crash site till 100 meters or something and there was nothing moving. I landed and rode there in the Scorpion and got out in Maverick Suit and opened up a device with the cutter tool. Then suddenly I was shot at. I lost concieousness and the mission was a failure.

Any help would be welcome.

Scarabs are better for shooting scavs.

If present prior to landing, you can spot them or their lights, or they shoot at your ship. Either hit them with dumb fires or land several hundred metres away and take them out with the SRV. One or two waves of scavs will be encountered. When on the ground out of your SRV (when in it shows ships and scavs arriving) use your ears. They are your best friend, and when you hear a ship, return to the SRV and retreat. Then deal with the scavs. Your SRV can be parked very close to the PoI.

Slip into your Dominator suit, leave your SRV a couple of hundred metres away, flank around them and pick them off at your leisure. Remember your shields, don't be shy in running away, they will come after you, making themselves a great target.
Wipe them out, go back to your SRV, collect mission goodies.

If you hear another ship approaching, rinse & repeat.

Can I turn on a shield on my suit and how?

I understand that a scorpion has a lot more armour than a scarab. Why is a scarab better for shooting criminals then?

Whats better? An SRV or a dominator suit? What weapons do I want on my dominator suit?

How do I shoot criminals with the SRV? Do I use turret or normal mode? do I drive back or forward?

'cos the scarab guns are more accurate (in my opinion)

you need a Mav suit to scavenge Dom for combat - you can swap in the SRV

The usual keyboard set up is the "c" key to turn the shields on and off.

The scarab's guns are more accurate from the first shot, whereas the scorpion's guns have to zero in once firing starts until eventually the target is hit. Break the fire and you have to restart the zeroing in process.

Normally shoot the srv in turret mode. It takes a bit of practice, but you can man the turret using the mouse (in my right hand my case) and drive using the KB (left hand). Mostly forward and back is enough using the E and Q keys (for me) and A/D to turn.

I would go SRV over the Dominator. I would only dismount if a scav was hiding where I could not get a line of sight to from the SRV. Suits and weapons are a matter of choice. I like the Maverick with an executioner and a tormentor. Some prefer a dominator with an Aphelion/AR-50 combo.

A bound key or button, it may be on one of the silly rotary controls.
The thing to do is go into Options, Controls, On foot and read through what is bound where making changes to what would work better for you.

As has been said initial accuracy but it should be a tougher target and there are those missiles.

What is better is the one that works best for you.

Again how you like to work will affect this choice but there is a lot to recommend long range weapons as hopefully fewer or none of them will be able to fire back

I believe running them over works but you might get shot a lot doing that, turret would probably be best but you really need better bindings and skills than me so you can drive while shooting with the turret.
The Scorpion is a two seat vehicle so you can in theory have a friend with you so one drives while the other shoots.

Another tip, you can buy already upgraded gear at stations. So keep looking and you can score a G3 modified suit or weapon with one or two mods already applied. There is also a sharing and caring thread where people post about gear they found but didn't pick up. A G3 Dominator or Maverick is already very nice. Note that you might need a Maverick to cut stuff open as it's the only suit to have a cutter built in.

If you don't really know how to turn on your shields it might be time to redo the on-foot tutorial. It is accessible from the help menu, I think. You can do that as many times as you like until you are comfortable with on-foot combat.

Other than that, popular strategies that don't involve handguns are: Killing Scavs with dumbfire missiles from your ship, or just driving over them in the SRV. You can also mow them down with your ship's hull.

I heartily endorsed the SRV "Hit and Run" tactic, it's quite effective and entertaining as well!

Thanks guys I think I made a lot of progress. I did the crash site retrieval mission three times today and one time there were no criminals, one time I shot the criminals from my diamondback explorer with one of two missle racks and one time I got into an SRV fight with the criminals and lost the SRV. I did manage to hit a couple of criminals though. I've uploaded in to youtube:
