Carriers

m curious, what's your answer to this in Elite's case? Is it other people/the multiplayer aspect of Elite? The BGS in general? Or the current Thargoid war narrative?

At least these are the three options that came to mind first.
I'm not Felix, but that's what I meant above; why keep doing it? I don't know, really. I can't pinpoint it. But if I'm not playing Elite for a period of time, I just want to.

I've earned over 10 billion credits, purchased a fleet carrier along with the two top-tier ships from both the Federation and the Empire (with associated promotions), moved all about in the Bubble, most of that after the major Thargoid invasion

... all without a single Thargoid encounter. But then my own chosen gameplay style is deep-space exploration, so my carrier is quite useful for selling data and rearming/refueling/repairing my exploration ships and mining ships (for Tritium).

Interesting comments about Elite in VR mode. I as one of those people that cannot use VR. It is a mental thing I believe, headaches and feeling sick, also faint.
Yes The comments about Starfield are very valid. I felt it was not my thing.
My comment about the Thargoid Crap. EMMM well I have done a bit of that but the nice thing with Elite is the felxibilty.

(I'd be really happy if they switched EDO to use SF exobiology, and even the Outpost building would fit in ED pretty well)

From what I've seen I agree entirely, hopefully FDEV will take a good look at what SF has done with bio and exploration and for the next release of planets we get some substance for exploration.

What I have seen of the main story through videos and etc (quite a bit), I agree the storyline is pretty....weak and contrived, and indeed purposeless, it's almost as if the game would be just as good to me if the main storyline didn't exist and they massively expanded some of the the side stories and exploration features, as good as they are nearly everything can be improved. If I was to play the game, I would want to completely ignore the main storyline and explore the galaxy (or bit of it they have created at least), but it seems to me to get what you need to actually do that you are required to play the main storyline. Of course in ED I have ignored the Thargoid stuff nearly entirely, except for the early parts where we were searching for the first Guardian bases but that was really exploration oriented and I wish there was more of it. I recently watched a video where the player was doing the progression to NG+7 final combat bit, and no thanks, that just looked entirely silly to me and completely uninteresting in any way.
For myself, I dropped the artefact on the table and haven't spoken to Constellation since.
The game is very geared towards combat, but exploration wise there's 2 types. Looking for mats for your own construction purposes which largely happens on airless moons, and searching for habitable planets on behalf of LIST (Some guy I sell planetary data to that I meet in various bars...) This can lead to passenger missions where you're setting up a colony, if you can find willing colonists.

It certainly isn't the multiplayer aspect I frequently don't see anyone for days. Don't think I've even exchanged an o7 with my squadmates yet.
There's always something new to do or which I haven't done for a while in Elite. Whether it's trading, AX, Odyssey stuff, ship engineering, exploration... There's enough variety to find something else if one activity starts to feel like a slog.

Thanks for the reply!

But you are in a squadron. It's a funny thing. The MP aspect, or rather the feeling of being part of something bigger than just you and your PC, has some allure to it, even if you never actually play with others.

Obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but I think a lot of players would have stopped playing in the meantime if Elite was purely singleplayer.

Some perhaps, we're all individuals...
Oddly SF feels more like an MMO' than Elite does. Again there's a FO76 feel when I go to the major cities half expecting to bump into other players.

Playing it in VR must be a big part of it. I'm too lazy to pack out the VR set and to switch between pancake for on foot, and VR for in space.. But to me, it's undeniable that flying a spaceship in Elite in VR is an awesome experience that no other space game can match.

Playing along with others has certainly kept the game 'alive' for me - the bunch of lunatics I play with have helped keep the game fun for all of us. As we go into Winter and shorter days, I'm pretty certain there will be much more mayhem once again!

I've had Starfield for about a month, the main story is pants
That's exactly what I expected. I knew SF would be Skyrim in space and Skyrim also had a terrible main plot. It's what made me realise I wouldn't even look at SF. I would've been surprised if people came back saying "OMG, the story is amazing!".

60,000LY from the bubble and heading back with, hopefully, gazillions of CR worth of data to purchase a carrier and head back out again with my 'fleet' of four ships customised for mining, fighting, trading, and exploration. Just to avoid, imo, the Thargoid rubbish. :)

Don't forget to go Solo as you near your destination CMDR....there's always some muppet out there who'll get their jollies off on ruining another player's game - just for laughs:cool:.

Thanks for the heads up but without wanting to derail the thread, since playing Premium Beta I always play solo in ED. It's the best experience imo. :)

I don't get the "feeling of being part of something bigger" from a squadron, though I do when working alongside Op Ida and PDES.
