Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

From Bored gamer on YouTube, demonstrating the new StarEngine (cough)... apologies, I had a sandwurmie stuck in my throat for a few minutes 🤭

...When it's on my hard drive Ci~G :)

I watched that until they flew past that planet with cloud layers a hundred klms high, either that or the planet was about 500klms in radius with the clouds at a "realistic earth height", because clouds on earth don't look like that from orbit even at the low orbit height of the ISS, that's simply not a full sized planet, not even a half sized planet, so I don't know how they can claim a full solar system size when everything is about a tenth scale, although true we have known about that aspect for a long time but they still claim full scale solar systems, it's a lie by omission.

Yes, but does the average gamer care about such geeky details? They want a fun space MMO with open-world seamless transitions and cutting-edge graphics. That's what CIG is trying to do while selling overpriced ships. The fans are still opening their wallets for it.

Totally agree. It was quite jarring to watch, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one affected. Even if that planet was 1/6 actual size, those clouds were ridiculous.

But to balance the negative with a positive, I found the new mini-map to be very good. Nothing hugely ground breaking, but better than other games I've played (YMMV). But I can't give them full credit until it's in the hands of players.

Unpersistent Test Universe announced...

For when 6 tiers of pre-pre-alpha testing aren't enough...

PS Pyro before 'Server Meshing' it is then 😁

So, all those years of saying they can't add Pyro until server meshing is in place were.... horse poo poo.

Who would have thunk?

Funding tracker going strong.

I wonder if backers watching the con buy a ship every time CIG hypes something. Like a drinking game, but instead of taking shots they buy a JPG.

And look how smoothly it works with ... 2 people, 1 buggy, and a few objects in an empty test corridor. Bounce, bounce, bounce JUDDER.
If you look closely you notice the player character suddenly jumps over the map transition. Everytime. The plushie only gets transferred to the other sub graph after about 1 second. I predict this is not going to work at all with the terrible physics engine that's currently in game that tends to get objects through planets or blow up things, and with the amazingly bad network code that will rubber band and make things explode and die.

Am watching this now...looks nice, but like a lot of renderers, crappy LOD loading around 2 mins 37 secs in, but also...are we going to discuss a video made by CIg? I didnt watch that salty guys video, but is that what the title refers to? Groundhog day? The only thing this video doesn't have although Im only halfway through is a worm that goes in and out of sand.
The video shows texts saying real biomes, and river formed terrain? How about release a version of pacman or something? Maybe a 2D version of SC. Anything.

Oh...it's just hit me...why sell jpegs and make millions of dollars, when you can sell video's made using UE5 and make billions?

Full scale solar distances, but 1/10th scale planets, was what they used to say. Or do they mean a full, scale, solar system? Another dream...their first system isnt even full yet. The more I see this stuff, the more comical it seems.

It's amusing how lame and janky the background NPCs look, even in a specially prepared CIG fluff video. Of course the environments look nice, they've had literally hundreds of people working on them for years. The only unique thing CIG brings to it is the open-ended budget and schedule. Almost every canned demo they put out looks reasonably good, for a few years, until it doesn't any more. Somehow it's never as impressive in game, if it ever gets that far.
But they managed to side-step the tricky issue of game play (or lack of it) by presenting it as yet another engine demo.

Funny to hear Parry is back at CIG, because he definitely left. I guess a few years in the real world couldn't compete with working on pie-in-the-sky dreams with no money or time constraints. It's like being an architect on that Neom project in Saudi Arabia.

Indeed that's not Star Citizen here, but a nice pre-rendered demo of some other game maybe. Or if they claim it's Star Citizen then it's a succession of misrepresentations and outright lies because what we have is definitely not that.
Some funny details I noticed, "physicalised frozen ocean" just means "we put an ice texture on the ground level of our map".. The fauna that doesnt exist.. Player characters moving like normal people instead of Doom Guys.. The quantum jump looking completely different from what we have.. "Fully interactable ships" while the ships in game have barely any interaction at all (everything is place holder assets).. "Rivers" plural while there's just the one, that was painfully handcrafted for many months.. etc.

Nice Two Steps From Hell soundtrack though, Merethe Soltvedt has such a great voice.

True, but when CIG tries to fool their whales that they are doing it "for real" and nobody has ever done etc etc etc, it's well worth pointing out.

Ouch, never noticed, now the hopping does seem odd.

Thank goodness CIG don't have repeating tiles in Starlumberengine.
