Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Oh!

I thought I saw a couple of hazy ones beyond the ship.

You could always send them a copy of this gif:

I find this quite interesting (well, ort of). How my Art suit is more expensive than my Dom one. I suppose some mods cost more - It just seems the combat ones ought to be more expensive... or not?

I'm presently quite close to the bubble mining, deep core and surface. While my limpets are busily collecting Platinum and every other element what's NOT stipulated in the named 'hot spots' 🤨....I'm also at the same time browsing the web for major 'black Friday' deals on stuff for my next computer upgrade. Hmm....an MSI Radeon RX 6750 XT Gaming X Trio 12Gb is about my limit pricewise for a graphics upgrade at the moment....seems a better deal than a Nvidia GeForce 4060ti 8GB pricewise?....large 3 fan card though, it will 'just' fit in my comp case, and by all accounts runs fairly cool. Might take the plunge today and order it....stop me if you think this is a big mistake! :D

Okay, Getting back to the game!....interesting (to find) how many 'Discovered Systems' (usually just the main star) have undiscovered planets etc. in that system that remain unclaimed by the original commander, I've found a few earth likes plus water giants and ammonia Terrestrial worlds too!....only a thousand or so light years away from the bubble.

Jack. :)

Hmm, I've been pretty much doing the same stuff at about 1100 LY out, minus the Black Friday bit...

We came across a few lonely, grouchy singularities.

Then switched to looking at Neutron Stars. This one is a Italian star, a Cavatappi. Wow!

The nVidea card is a slightly better performer if that helps at all:

The nVidea card is a slightly better performer if that helps at all:

I’ve been the proud and happy owner of the AMD option above for over a year and, apart from the sometimes still “blittery” orbit lines at fairly oblique angles (the “etched” planetary distance lines are actually kinda appealing imo), i’ve found it a great option for Odyssey, seldom below 60fps on foot (and typically over 100fps in ship) even with my desired quality settings, ie: 3440x1440p at ULTRA with no FSR or other frame compression…

…the 4060 may have an overall 11% better performance score, but i’d also pay attention to the so-called “nice to haves”, where the 6750 scores 40 to 80% better, aside from the age score - these are indicative of how well the card handles more cutting edge rendering tech and thus of how it will perform over time on newer, more graphically intensive titles…

If you’re looking for maximum framerate on older to current games, go with nVidia - if you’re more looking for decent frame rate with best possible visual quality and future-proofness, AMD is the better option imo…

…also, what kind of system do you have? If the CPU (and hence motherboard/chipset) is AMD, there’s good reason to use an AMD GPU - nVidia might be a better option with an Intel CPU.

…and also, if nVidia is offering specials on very recent cards, keep an eye out for similar price cuts from AMD - prices have been coming down for some time and it often pays to wait a bit and see - but depending on how urgent the upgrade is, as ever!

Speaking of computer rigs -- my rig was having serious problems for a while, and I was unable to determine the root cause. After much hassle and trying of things, I finally decided to give up on it and just replace the darn thing.

I got a decent deal on a pre-built PC with an Intel Core i9 12900K and an RTX 4070. It should work pretty well, I hope. My old 3070ti was doing fine, and in theory this should be better. I'll find out soon enough, I guess.

So I find myself today installing Elite Dangerous from scratch again, which I have not done in some years.

Everything is proceeding as expected, except for the speed. Stuff is downloading really slowly from the FDEV servers, I must say. It has said 1 hour to completion for 45 minutes now, hah.

Or perhaps my memory fails me, which it often does. I just don't recall the install taking quite this long before. Ah well.

Anyway, I'm bored so I'm posting here while I wait. lol.

That's what I'm up to!

An hour for 45 mins? Sounds like it might be timing out :(

Fingers crossed it's just a hiccup and you'll be back soon!

I actually played Guild Wars 2 for a while today and got a bit wrapped up in the personal story doodah. However, a few steps were frustrating beyond belief so I probably won't be doing that again in a hurry! :D

Yeah, it did finally finish and everything is working. I of course was able to restore my bindings and journals because I'm an experienced CMDR and know about these things, lol.

I did find it strange that EDO defaulted to such a low graphics level. It even said "we are setting the graphics level according to your computer's abilities" or something like that. It set them to High, but with a resolution of 1280x720, with FSR on. Wow, did it look awful on my 1440p screen!

I put it all back to Ultra like I had it before, with a few things disabled that I don't like (DOF, Motion Blur, etc.). Now it looks very nice again, except for the anti-aliasing which they are never going to fix! I shall continue to grumble about that.

I now just have to finish installing my helper programs, like EDDiscovery and Elite Observatory and I should be back in business.
