What is your favourite DLC pack of 2024?

Honestly I haven’t bought any of the DLC this year, been busy with RL and truthfully nothing has jumped out at me enough to go out of my way and buy it. The DLC rosters haven’t been exactly “overwhelming”. There’s typically only been one or two species in each DLC I actually want/feel adds something different to PZ. And it’s got nothing to do w a lack of “ABC” animals either, I like a lot of niche stuff. I guess my issue has more so been with the delivery-route Frontier has been taking with everything.

Hands-down the worst pack this year, imo, was the Arid Animal Pack. Arid as a theme was something that should have covered the cross-continental arid regions of the world and we just got an assortment of African species (most of which were ungulates). And there’s nothing wrong with ungulates but when nearly an entire DLC consists of an already well-represented group in PZ, it feels stale to me. Additionally the DLC’s Black Rhino is way too much like the already in-game White Rhino. Irl these two species aren’t nearly as similar as they are in-game. Taking away a lot of the uniqueness that happens with the species. And the same can be said for one of the only “unique” picks we got in the pack too, the Sand Cat. Was PZ’s first true small cat, but it moves and acts just like the already-done large cats. Porcupine was the only selling-point of this pack tbh.

And as for the Tropical and Oceania packs, the main selling points of these were the pieces for me. But both only offer very similar building elements and are extremely themed. Its nice that you can build region-specific jungle architecture, but shouldn’t building pieces in a zoo game primarily focus on building elements that actually exist in most RL zoos? Four years of support, and PZ still lacks a lot of basic zoo building elements, such as a good chainlink or clapboard set, not to mention all the faux wood and rock elements that are EVERYWHERE in most zoos nowadays.

Overall, I think the soon-to-come Eurasia Animal Pack might be the only one I actually buy upon its release. And the ONLY reason for this is because of the pack including a waterfowl species. And I’m still iffy on my excitement for it. Part of me is concerned Frontier might have just shrunk the legs on the crane rig and called it a day with the swan. Which is not representative of the real animal at all. I’ll wait to draw my conclusions on it until I watch early-access gameplay of it from content creators. As for the rest of the Eurasia Animal Pack’s roster, I find it pretty underwhelming as a collective. None of the animal picks are terrible per-say, it’s just most of them are incredibly same-y to one another or species we already have in PZ.

And all this being said, I don’t expect things to change much in 2024. Frontier has lost a ton of employees and the company is struggling, so expecting game-changing elements/animal inclusions for future DLC in PZ would be foolish atm. I am hopefully though that South America will finally get some much needed attention. I just hope when Frontier gets to it they include some things that aren’t from the typical “large ungulate, cat, dog, bear, croc” formula.

1. Eurasia
It basically completes everything I need to build a typical german low budget zoo / Tierpark. It adds the Swan, which makes me very hopeful for 2024, because Frontier would not use such rick just once. Not when we consider that the Wolverine probably also got a pretty unique rick, so only the other animals could be considered more easy "clones" if we really want to use that term. The Wisent looks stunning and I would have never dreamed of getting it. I do have a very soft spot for the Sloth bear but also did not dare to hope. I did never care about a Takin, but oh, this beautiful mode. So the only animal that I will forever blissfully ignore is the Saiga.
2. Tropical
I am glad we got the Gibbon, as for me it's a more common pick than the Siamang, but I could be wrong here and at the end, only a few monkeys (using this term in the german sense where all primates, langurs, lemurs, whatsoever are "Affen") are the wrong monkeys. The Fossa will grow on me in time, I'm sure. Some of the pieces are nice to build with. But, as all packs except the Eurasia pack for me this year, are kind of weak. I don't really think it does the biome justice, and while I understand why the Sloth is an exhibit animal, that chunky climbing frame is just... not nice. And I do not like it when we get a rare pick instead of a more common one, for me it's the "wrong" sloth. And I genuinly can not remember the other animals without looking them up so they must have had almost zero effect on me.
3. Oceania
See, I need a personal connection to an animal to really really want them in game. What can I say, I'm an emotional woman, I think with my heart more often than with my brain. And Oceanian animals are highly underrepresented in german zoos, so I just can not have a personal connection to them because most of them I've rarely or never seen in real life. That does not take away from the fact that Oceania did deserve its own pack and people of Oceania should be given the oppoetunity to build their home town zoo, just as everyone of us. I did like the building pieces more than those in the Tropical pack though and will probably use them very very often in the future.
4. Arid
The porcupine was a big wish of mine and it is awesome. I always wanted the Somali Wild Ass but never dreamed of actually getting it, as with most of my oddball wishes. (Hello, skunky skunk). But honestly, the ass deserves a voice. And three antilopes in one pack, all from africa, are simply an overkill of clones and I just don't need the sand cat. I don't. Sorry. Weakest animal pack in PZ history for me.

Allow me some more words about this year: In my book it was not a good one for Planet Zoo DLCs, even if for me it ended on a high note. But it is not the Devs fault, that the year went how it went. What can a team do if it is stripped down like it supposedly is?
Frontier and this community is losing some very lovely and talented people and all due to very questionable business decisions and the very questionable lay offs that followed. News flash: You can't make money with games without people who actually make these games and help build the community around it.

I am thankful for everyone who did their best under the difficult circumstances, I hope whoever was responsible for the decision to stray away from Frontiers core values and core games (creative simulation) gets kicked by that somali wild ass and PLEASE with an audible scream.

To anyone reading this who is now emotionaly and / or financially instable due to circumstances that were by no means their fault: My thoughts are with you and I hope you can, despite everything, have an awesome holiday and a very good start into the new year.

...nearly all of which also occur in Asia. Why do people keep peddling this falsehood?

The Arid Animal Pack was hands-down better than this new Eurasia Pack.
Never said that all the species were ONLY found in Africa. So what I said isn’t false. And to say the Arid Animal Pack is diverse in its selection of species, region-wise, when the theme encompasses all the arid regions of the world just isn’t true.

Regardless, my feelings towards the Arid Pack are based more-so on the limited scope of habitat design opportunities. Most of the Arid Pack’s inclusions are large ungulates that could all share one zoo habitat. From a habitat design perspective, all of the Arid Pack’s ungulates, irl, are held in basically the same type of enclosures. And the same can be said for the ungulates included within the Eurasia Animal Pack. As I mentioned, I’m not overly enthusiastic about the Eurasia Animal Pack’s ungulate roster either.

You’re misconstruing my statements and feelings on the packs. All of us are entitled to our own personal opinions about each DLC, but we shouldn’t go making assumptions about each other or our reasonings. Our feelings on this clearly aren’t the same, and that’s ok. This is a thread that was created with the intention of allowing everyone to voice their thoughts/rankings on 2023’s DLCs.

You said, and I quote, "just got an assortment of African species", which is a common line by people upset by the very reasonable roster to try and diminish what it actually was.
Regardless, my feelings towards the Arid Pack are based more-so on the limited scope of habitat design opportunities.
I also find this hard to believe, since every habitat for every animal is, functionally, exactly the same. The differences lie in the placement of objects and manipulation of terrain (including water). You can make these variances with literally any species, and whether you make it bigger or smaller, dense or not dense, hilly or flat, it's still the same habitat. You could make a range of different habitats for any of the Arid animals; just because you choose not to doesn't mean they are any more or less creatively limiting than any other species.

Anyway, I'm defensive over the Arid Pack because most of the "opinions" I see about it are...generally hypocritical. Like the Eurasia Animal Pack is really no different in functionality. It hits the same beats. And besides, even if it was "just an assortment of African species", that is perfectly reasonable and should be encouraged, since African species represent the vast majority of zoo collections anyway.

I have mixed feelings about the packs we got this year. Animal wise, not bad at all, just roster wise it's a bit on the bad side.

Tropical;
Simply said; this should've been an Indonesia pack(Replace the hog with Sumatran rhino and the fossa with a Visayan spotted deer) due to the scenery and save the red river hog and fossa for a Rainforest Animal pack. The tropical forest are just so biodiverse it should be an animal pack filled with SA, African, Asian and maybe Australian animals as well. A missed opportunity for a tree kangaroo, sadly.

Aside from that, animal wise, pretty solid! Lar gibbon, the red river hog and Fossa are solid picks. Personally not really hyped about the fossa and definitely not for the Asian water monitor, despite the fact that it is a beautiful animal in game. It should've been saved for an Anniversary gift.

Arid;
Animal wise pretty good, roster wise, meh not that great. Just call it African Animals pack. I just wished they would put in some more animals from different country's in the pack. thankfully we got the collared peccary this year as a anniversary animal, so that's been fixed. Animal wise I liked the pack, I was really happy with my black rhino, porcupine, Addax, donkey, but the sand cat and Dama gazelle, are just animals I didn't care much for. Yes the dama gazelle is beautiful, but it wasn't needed. As many said, Hamadryas baboob would just make this pack ROCK! also replace the sand cat with like a yellow footed rock wallaby and your good to go. Also, the exhibit animal wasn't that much exciting. It would be better to have like a bearded dragon or a thorny devil.

Oceania;
Ah Oceania, a great pack with really cool new animals, especially for me, the Kiwi! For birds, this was a good pack! my only complaint was the quokka, even though a great pick, I would've chosen the tree kangaroo. This makes the tree kangaroo a harder animal to get, but who knows?

Eurasia;
A good pack, still with also some odd balls. I was sceptical at first cause I was expecting a biome pack, like mountains. Still a solid pack and I think roster wise pretty good, I would only remove the Sloth Bear, didn't really care for it and I think there are better options for bears. But that's all just personal, I have a zoo where I could use it. So, it's all good.

I hope 2024 will bring us our biome packs again, I actually quite liked them, due to them bringing us animals we wouldn't get in a continental pack.

1. Arid - Decent animal roster, but several choices could have been better. 6/10
2. Tropical - Same as above with several poor choices. Don't care for the scenery at all. 5/10
3. Oceania - Not much to be excited about with this pack. A couple animals okay. I haven't even looked at the scenery yet. 4/10
4. Eurasia - A few decent animal choices, but a confusing theme and, again, multiple poor animal choices. 3/10

Overall, not a great year for DLCs. Hoping 2024 is better.

1. Oceania - 10/10 I love the animals, and the scenery set is one of my favorites so far. I know a few animals aren't common in zoos, but I enjoy their uniqueness since I don't build for realism 100% of the time. I also enjoy the scenarios too, and this one was a lot of fun. And the new map rocks.
2. Arid - 9/10 I am one of the ungulate lovers, so this pack was catered to me. Those and the porcupine made this animal pack one of my favorites. My only choice would have been to swap 1 ungulate for the Hamadrayas baboon.
3. Eurasia - 8/10 I mainly build temperate zoos, and these animals can easily get added into. The swan was a nice surprise, and the wolverine, takin, wild boar, and sloth bear were all in my top 25.
4. Tropical - 6/10 The scenery here was not my favorite, which is why the pack got a lower rating. The animals are great, but I expected this pack to be an animal pack, considering the tropicals have so many more animals they could feasibly include (looking at coati, howler monkey, spider monkey, ibis, ocelot, etc.)

Overall pretty satisfied with the year. Each pack gave us at least 1 top 10 animal, so that's nice to see. Hoping for full support for 2024 with a Latin America, Safari, Coastal, and Tundra pack.

This year was not scratching an itch for me at all until today. The Eurasia Animal pack is my favourite with NO COMPETITION. It leaves the other packs this year in the dust, and I’m so happy I actually got a useful pack this year.

1. Eurasia Animal Pack - I am excited for every single animal in this pack. I can think of some way to get use out of all of them. The Wisent in particular was my most highly requested animal since Twilight Pack brought me the Skunk and Bat. Love the Europe representation from the Wolverine and Wild Boar, as well as the Pleistocene rep from the Saiga. 10/10

2. Tropical Pack - The highlight for this pack for me is the scenery pieces. One of my favourite zoo areas in the world is The Islands at Chester Zoo, and this scenery seems to be directly inspired by that. The Sloth, despite being the ‘wrong’ species, is a must have in all my zoos. The RRH and Lar Gibbon I get lots of use out of, but the other two not so much. 7/10

3. Arid Animal Pack - What was initially a bit of a disappointment has grown on me a little. I was excited for the Porcupine (like everyone else), but other than that I was very disappointed on reveal. Since, I have found use from the Black Rhinoceros, Addax and Dama Gazelle. I’d always choose the Bactrian Camel over the Dromedary, and the other species of the pack just never seem to find a place in my zoos. 5/10

4. Oceania Pack - I hate to say it, but this was my least used pack of the year. I feel like those who love the Eurasia Animal Pack hate the Oceania Pack and vice versa. I love what this pack did for Oceanian players, since I’m all for everyone getting their picks, but I have no use for any animal in this pack. I’d use the Little Penguin, but prefer the other two penguin choices. Bat is cute, but I prefer the Egyptian Fruit Bat. The scenery is really well executed and compliments the Tropical Pack. Apart from that, I didn’t get much excitement or use from this one. 4/10

No surprise that Oceania is my favourite by an enormous margin, the pack that singlehandedly saved the game's roster for me and made me satisfied with whatever comes next. I expected the kiwi and Tasmanian devil to make it into the game at some point (not that it changed how desperate I was for them) but never dreamed we'd get the little penguin and quokka, and now they're among the most useful animals in the entire game for my builds. It's still so surreal how our unique little corner of the world doesn't feel as left out anymore.

Other three packs are probably all ranked in the lower half of packs overall for me unfortunately, although it was worth it for the Oceania Pack existing. The Eurasian Animal Pack is great for the representation it brings, especially for our European playerbase, but other than the swan and tortoise all those species are as useless to me as the Oceania Pack is for many other players. I have my grievances with the Arid Animal Pack, which I don't feel like repeating here because I'm tired of talking about it, but it was at least excellent in the fact it finally fleshed out North Africa and the Middle East. I love the scenery of the Tropical Pack but while I feel the species selection is strong, it's not quite strong enough to stand on its own as a 4+1 scenery pack and does little to address the sore lack of South American species outside of the sloth.

Eurasia by far!

Then Tropical, then Oceania. The models in Arid are stunning, but the pack is too uniform and doesn’t have many of my personal wishlist species in it.

1: Eurasia Animal Pack - although it's not out yet, the animal selection is pretty great overall
2: Oceania Pack - some excellent animals and good scenery pieces to boot
3: Tropical Pack - the best scenery pieces of the year in my opinion, and a solid animal selection
4: Arid Animal Pack - it should have been called the Africa Animal Pack, and I think it's the overall weakest pack this year despite standouts like the Dromedary and ACP

Since i generally prefer scenery over animals packs said animal pack usually rank lower for me unless they a) have pretty much the ideal roster (for me) or b) the scenery packs are lackluster
Which would leave me at something like:
Tropical and Oceania: These two share the 1st place, both packs animal rosters are not perfect imo but nice. They also bring alot of universally usefull scenery from the wallset and leaflitter of tropical to all the wooden boards, fences and so on from oceania.
Eurasia: I really like all the animals in theory, but its the second pack this year that has one animal im super hyped about and a bunch of great animals that do get pulled down alot by the combination of them and exclsion of others. Also both animal packs this year were super ungulate heavy, which dont get me wrong i love ungulates but man would i prefer some more variety in these animal packs. Also doesnt help that some of my most wanted animals for this theme didnt show up. This is one pack were changing 2 animals would probably catapult it onto favorite pack category.
Arid: Basicly all the same reasons as eurasia but scaled up a bit

It is tough for me to fully decide which pack was the best of the year as I appreciate the animals that come into the game, so I will go with the order they released:
The tropical pack (April 5th, 2023) is decent regarding the scenery and animal roster because I have no expectations. I was happy with including the fossa, lar gibbon and red river hog. These creatures helped immensely to expand the families they are included in, and the Red River hog is more proper in shape to an an actual pig, which I am happy about
Arid Animal Pack (June 20th, 2023) Ah yes, considered by the majority of the community upon release to be the worst pack of the century; some say it is worse than the Southeast Asia animal pack (March 30th 2021) (our first animal pack) but upon knowing that the black rhino was going to be part of the DLC I anticipated for its release as I needed the black rhino to be part of my "circle of life" section of a zoo idea as it's the first animal to appear in the Circle of Life sequence after the sunrise in the Lion King (both in 1994 and 2019).
Oceania pack (September 12th 2023) (about two months after this pack's release, I got the game). This was also a great pack, but I am not biased towards this or the Australia pack despite being Australian anyway; back on topic, it was highly anticipated because of the Kiwi (having some blood there) and the Tasmanian devil. I love the model and the animations (I don't care if it makes the wrong sound).
Eurasian Animal Pack (to be released December 13th): looking at the animal roster, this one looks excellent (unexpected). It might be one of the best packs and a favourite of many. Like I said earlier, I expected the wild boar but didn't expect it so soon. Apart from that shock, though, I will buy this pack shortly after it is released.
I look forward to including the European bison, wild boar and wolverine in a European section soon. :)

That is tough, I do like them all for different reasons, but here goes.

1. Tropical - Lar Gibbon and Red Red River Hog were my big wishes and I love tropical animals, so this naturally ranks high for me.
2. Oceania - This one actually inspired me to build a whole new zoo in New zealand, great animals also.
3. Arid - I was confused by the number of ungulates at first, but what does it really mean in the bigger picture? Nothing, very useful species overall, and a porcupine is such a zoo stample, I plan to use it alot.
4. Eurasia - Not bad by any means, it is just that I do not use European animals much, so this ranks lower. BUT it has a swan, takin and wolverine! Awesome pack to end the year with in my opinion.

  1. Eurasia - Simply because it has many animals that fit into the zoos I like to build.
  2. Tropical - A decent roster but nothing high up on my wishlist. The scenery items are a big plus.
  3. Arid - Most of the roster was quite disappointing for me but I got an animal very high on my wishlist (African crested porcupine).
  4. Oceania - None of the animals really work for the zoos I tend to build but the scenery items and foliage is useful.

  1. Eurasia Animal Pack - Solid pack, great animals roster and more European animals, finally. Animals in this pack are very useful for European zoos. And Wolverine, of course 😉
  2. Arid Animal Pack - A dream pack for ungulate lovers, ungulates in this pack are amazing!
  3. Tropical Pack - Great animals, gibbons are so fun to watch. Building pieces are extremely useful for realistic zoo builders especially that stained timber pieces.
  4. Oceania Pack - I rather to not say it 😅
