What is your favourite DLC pack of 2024?

1. Eurasia Animal Pack (10/10)
  • Hands down the best animal pack roster out there not including Grasslands. This pack proves you don’t need to have countless new animations and new rigs to make a good pack, you just need a diverse selection of animals. While I would rather have a highlands pack with continental rep, I can’t deny that I love the add ons they chose, mostly for Europe. I’ve wanted Takin and Swan for so long, and I’m really excited for other ones that I didn’t know I wanted like Wisent, Saiga and the Boar. The Wolverine also makes for a really good addition. I don’t even need to have the gameplay I can already tell this pack is gonna be top notch.
2. Oceania Pack (8.5/10)
  • Again not a huge fan of regional packs but I do love that they are giving appreciation one continent at a time. Pack roster is pretty good, while I like bigger animals more I realize that wouldn’t have happened because most of the Oceania animals left were pretty small. Loved building for Quokka, Devil, Kiwi and the Penguin. I know the flying fox isn’t a bird but whatever, it’s still a good addition imo. Scenery is decently usable, couple of the pieces feel overrated like the netting and logs, but other than that its definitely a good set, especially the foliage.
3. Tropical Pack (7.5/10)
  • It’s a good pack, but I think the roster is a bit to be improved on. I love the gibbon, I’m not mad that it’s not a monkey, because the gibbon is a good addition, however the AWM could’ve been something more useful and symbolic of rainforests, swapping in a bird would definitely be the move here. The sloth itself isn’t too bad, obviously would’ve preferred Two toed, but the layout of the sloths WTE is where the real problem lies. It’s too constrictive in building with your imagination because the climbing structure is basically already done for you. Scenery sets good, extremely useful, foliage is nice but if someone’s going for a tropical foliage set, I would direct them to the Oceania Pack.
4. Arid Animal Pack (5/10)
  • While made up of good and useful animals in a realistic setting, it extremely lacks in diversity for a pack itself. 5 ungulates, a cat, and 1 unique animal isn’t really what gets people’s attention. How about instead of adding the yearly reptile to the tropical pack, add a spurred tortoise to Arid, and replace that spot in tropical with a bird. There’s really not much to say about this one. It lacks diversity, it was a missed opportunity to make a true desert pack, that’s really it. Not much to it. I enjoy building for all the animals, but I can’t say as a pack they do well together.

This might be not directly what this thread is about but it feels appropriate here seeing all the rather underwhelmed responses.

Imo this year was planet zoos most underwhelming year of dlc but it was in no way shape or form bad, even if it wasnt very exciting for the most part.
If i had to describe this year in one word its polish and thats why its so underwhelmingly recieved.
If we take a step back, forget about the packs and just look at how the game changed on a macro level, the result is a very positive one.
Many areas that were kinda allright before with most of their most important animals allready added but not much else to support them, often making zoo areas for these animals feel samey or sometimes small.
Tropical africa was pretty much just apes, okapi and the bongo, madagascar 3 lemures, North africa and the middle east where present but really not much more, oceania internationally was fine but really just australia, oceania locally was missing many of its most important endemic life, europe was just enough to be considerd in an allright place, cold climate asia was kinda rough to build for with lots of carnivoras, 2 deer a horse, a camel, a crane and nothing else and india had its most important big animals since the base game, but nothing for in between.

But what about now?
Tropical africa now got a small ungulate to round it out, madagascar got its apex predator and finally isnt just lemures anymore, North africa and the middle east trippled in their animals and are now abundantly represented with only 3 common wants in the barbary sheep, spurred tortoise and obviously the hamadryas baboon, oceania is more then just australia with some of its most essential animals aswell as a very common filler animal, europe finally is more then 4 deer and an ibex regarding ungulates and got fleshed out to a point that most people even europeans are content with it never being updated again, cold climate asia got a bunch more varried and india recieved some great support with the flex pick of all flex pick with the wild boar and finally has a mid size ungulate and the sloth bear as another flashy endemic.

And that isnt all as we got both many incredibly popular, important and requested animals in a gibbon overhaul, a sloth (even if its the wrong one and a pain to use), a porcupine, tassie devil, kiwi, wolverine, takin and most important of all to me our first waterfowl in the mute swan.

This year did a great job of just fleshing out areas, adding animals to round them out that arnt that special themself but elevate the other animals around them and without them building a regional area is far less fun and varried, while also adding each pack some very requested and at times complicated animals to pull of which all where stunning.

This is all great and wonderfull and what the game needed, but was it exciting? No but thats the nature of the beast
Polish isnt exciting, polish is literally filling in the cracks between the larger pieces, rounding out the rough edges and choosing the usefull and practical over the flashy, but still it is nessecary.
Look at africa, why was and still is it the most fullfilling, varried and satisfying region to build for in the game, even when other continents and areas got more animals then it?
Because africa unlike most other regions before this year was allready polished. The basegame gave us a varried roster of both ungulates and carnivorans which build a back bone for the more interesting animals allready in the game and that came with the packs. Imagine we had just two antelopes in the base game, africa would have felt much much worse, pretty terrible even, even if the animals removed individually arnt that interesting, what really is interesting is having the choice between them.
As new content, the ungulate overload of this year was pretty boring and i agree.
Its not fun to wait 3 months for new content only for the content to be animals that all could fit the same basic display that you have allready build for another ungulate.
Is that interesting new content? No not really, but is it important? I say yes very much so
The Ungulates and overall packs this year really were not that interesting on release besides oceania, with neither tropical or arid exciting me to use their animals and eurasia only doing so as i am literally waiting for animals to build a cold climate eurasia area since we got the crane in wetlands, but what they will be is interesting in the future.
This abundance of them will make building for specific regions in the future so much more fun when your not hardpressed to use the new content.
Im sure a year from now people will be appreciating this years content much more once they used it in a more relaxed setting, building whatever they please and just so happen to use them. Imagine you want to build a north african area, nothing big like 4-5 habitats.
Before this year, that was pretty much a clear cut choice of scymitar horned oryx, fennec fox, striped hyena and caracal and you could say thats all the region needed for fine representation but now?
You got the choice of maybe building a desert nocturnal house with fennec fox and sandcat or just one of them, maybe one antelope pen? Maybe two or three? Maybe a mixed species desert habitat, that could be fun! How about an implied desert oasis town that keeps dromedarys? Maybe even an implied dromedary ride? I want a mid size carnivoran habitat, is it gonna be caracal or striped hyena? Maybe both? I feel like adding an exhibit to the night house, do i choose the base game snake, the arid dlc snake or the funky beetle? So much choice, so much fun and that with just more "boring" ungulates and the sandcat, not to mention of the actually wholly unique new porcupine.
This element of choice is highly underrated and even with arid being my least favorite pack of the year and maybe even the game, i really cant say im upset about it.
Would i have liked baboon and tortoise? Hell yeah!
Do i really like that my choice for north african desert ungulate isnt scimitar horned oryx automatically but between 3 different and distinct looking antelopes, the dromedary and the somali wild ass? Also hell yeah!
Sure it would have been more dope in the short term to get these two more unique animals, but longterm this abundance of choice is imo very important as it helps to keep the game fresh and less stale even without new content. Before arid you would have never build a north african area more then once cause why would you? You most likly allready have tried the one and only animal combination availabe and doing that again isnt that exciting, but now?
Now building another north african section in another zoo is totally viable and fun and thats honestly awesome.

This year really hammerd home the benefit of these bonus regional packs, as they allow to not just sprinkle in a little bit of extra to a region but to take one and slam dunk it from okay to fantastic and i honestly hope we see some more of them.
Imo a 2 2 split would be great, having one scenery pack and animal each for regional packs and more global ones to get both that slow and steady growth everywhere while also making single regions much more worthwhile instantly.
Without the arid pack, north africa would have never been even half as interesting to rebuild for and if we should get the hamadryas baboon in the future it will be even better then if we would have got it in the arid pack in expanse of one of these "boring" ungulates.

Have the packs this year been kinda lackluster as an exclusive package? Yes
Do i still think they did the job of actually making the game better just as good as any before them? Yes
And i think with all the critic these packs got including from me, its really important to say that.

Now for my own rankings?

1. Eurasia
2. Arid
3. Oceania
4. Tropical

What happend here? Arid number 2?
Simple, it finally happend, the disappointment is gone and it clicked for me.
Looking not at the pack itself but what it actually did for the game it really has risen in my appreciation and i finally can say i think that arid is a good pack for all the reasons listed above.

Oceania and Tropical are rather low, i havent got that much use of the pieces yet and oceania just simply isnt a region i have much use for, yet i greatly appreciate what it did for the region.

Tropical is the lowest for the cardinal sin of being the most boring while also the least game changing. Its the only pack with an animal with which inclusion i flat out 300% disagree (wrong sloth) and that frustates me as i really wanna use the sloth but the box is just not fun and the climbing frame flat out ugly. The other 4 animals did bring great things, even the monitor, but they also had the least impact on the game as a whole imo. RHH is great, but while it helps alot tropical africa didnt suddenly become awesome, it just became fine. Fossa does heavy lifting for madagascar as its first non lemure and apex predator, but it also doesnt satisfy my need for more from madagascar alone. The lar gibbon and Monitor are fine and fun additions to SEA, but they also really did not feel needed and id vastly would have prefered for this focus to go to south america, but its how it is and the brachiation update is chefs kiss.

Eurasia is my favorite, mostly due to it having imo the most ballanced roster while also activly playing into my biases. Ive been defending european representation for literal years by now, ive been there defending the idear of a europe pack against the haters, being so so happy that the north america pack finally gave us 3 new european animals and now having a second pack dedicated to fleshing out europe just warms my heart and makes me happy. And then it also does such a great job at that, brings other animals aswell in the saiga and takin that i wanted for a while for my asia section, gave me the boar that ive been begging for for ages and finally the first ever waterfowl. Who cares about that silly fuzzy bear, im just happy and glad that i got such an amazing pack catering to my taste and current projects after 3 packs i didnt appreciate on release.

So yeah thats my retrospective of the year, was it allways exciting and did it never underwhelm me? Nope, infact i was very underwhelmed by 2 packs on release and one in actual use.
Is it how i would have done it? No not at all
But was it good for the game? Absolutly

Hopefully this trend of fixated polish continues next year with south americas, also taking it from a train wreck to decently represented and maybe even a second one to take it to great. Maybe we even will get multiple monkeys in a pack to make up for the 1000 day curse, who knows? Defenetly would be my first priority regarding South americas weak backbone

Oceania - Solid 9.5/10 for me. Love all the species and the scenery sets. The only thing that knocked off half a point was not getting a Tree Kangaroo instead of the Quokka. But the quokka's really fun too.

Eurasia - 8.5/10 for me. Sloth Bear wasn't a great choice for me so that knocked off like a whole point by itself, the rest of the animals were great picks with a small cumulative detraction from "perfect picks" Not that I hate the Sloth Bear, I'm sure I'll warm up to them, I just would rather have seen another pick.

Arid - 7.5 for me. I know a lot of community favorites here but the roster wasn't that great for me overall. Though I've gotten more interested in it as time has gone on. Of course, the brightest star in the pack is possibly the best designed animal we have in the entire game - the Porcupine. That actually raises the pack about 2 points by itself.

Tropical - 4.5/10 for me. RRH and for once the exhibit animal is one of the stars for me. The Fossa was a great pick for the community but wasn't really on my radar, the Gibbon was not a surprise but wasn't as interesting since we got the Siamang first. Didn't care one way or the other about the Monitor. What brought this pack down though was the scenery sets. Not a fan of it at all and honestly brought it down about 3 points in of itself.

What's been great for me is that I got every single one of my top 5 mammal wants this year, even though one was in an exhibit (Sloth, Tasmanian Devil, Porcupine, RRH and Wolverine in order). We've seen the Wolverine some and I want to say it'll be my favorite from this year, but the Porcupine may still take it instead.

Eurasian -10/10
Saiga, swan, takin, awesome exhibit tortoise. The wisent and wolverine people get their favorites, and the sloth bear ups the Indian content.

Arid -9/10
What can I say? I love ungulates. The porcupine is pretty great too.

Tropical -8/10
I've been using the gibbon and the hog to the max in new builds. They were both very high on my most wanted list and I was thrilled to get them both in one pack. The hig especially is such a good model. The fossa and the monitor are nice to have and beautiful models, but I would've liked some SA representation.

Oceania -7/10
Amazing scenery pieces and fantastic animal models. Even if they aren't all animals I'm super into, I recognise their regional importance. I wish that the quokka was a tree roo or Victoria Crown Pigeon (would've been good in the tropical pack instead of the water monitor too...)

Here's my say:

  1. Eurasia animal pack - you know, ask me 3 years ago when I joined the forums if I'd like this pack and I'd say no. Not one bit. I woulda thought it was kinda boring, nothing really interesting. But my mind changed. Out of all the animals, I'm most excited for the swan, bear, and the wisent over anything else. A seemingly lackluster pack is probably one of my favorite packs ever. It brings us an iconic bear, it brings us THE swan, and it fleshed out Europe, which had no iconic animals in the game until the Europe pack (North America if you count the moose). All in all, this pack is an 10/10 for me and is a fantastic DLC
  2. Tropical pack - this pack was not half bad, not at all. A nice mix of animals and fun to use. The red river hog, the Asian water monitor, and fossa, and the lar gibbon, all amazing in their own ways. These 4 are quite versatile and can fit various zoos you wanna build. The monitor in particular is my favorite because it seems to be the coolest looking for me, plus I love to build reptile houses. Overall, the pack is probably a 8/10, solid pack, would definitely buy again if that were possible
  3. Arid animal pack - so, this one is special. When it was released, I honestly felt kinda "meh" about it, kinda bummed. It seems lame. And, honestly, it is lame. In my opinion, the only reason it sold ok was because of the porcupine and sand cat. But, this pack did raise its appeal to me (just to clarify, I never hated it). While it could've been way, way more than what it offered, at the end of the day it brings a bunch of different animals and fleshed out North Africa. What was originally a 3/10 for me has grown to a 6/10
  4. Oceania pack - this one, funnily enough, has gone down. I would've ranked this the 2nd best pack, but now, after all the other packs, it went down in value. I hardly use these animals, and I'm real happy we got them and for our Oceanian friends, but in the end, the animals don't do anything special for me. Actually, my favorite part of the pack is the music🤣. This pack, originally an 8/10, lowered down to a 5/10

Overall, though, I'm kinda at a point where I don't care too much of what we get. I mean, yeah, I want South America to be filled and I have a few wants here and there (looking at you, ABB), but besides that, I'm don't care too much what we get next. I just hope we get some more support after the Eurasia pack

No surprise that Oceania is my favourite by an enormous margin, the pack that singlehandedly saved the game's roster for me and made me satisfied with whatever comes next. I expected the kiwi and Tasmanian devil to make it into the game at some point (not that it changed how desperate I was for them) but never dreamed we'd get the little penguin and quokka, and now they're among the most useful animals in the entire game for my builds. It's still so surreal how our unique little corner of the world doesn't feel as left out anymore.

Other three packs are probably all ranked in the lower half of packs overall for me unfortunately, although it was worth it for the Oceania Pack existing. The Eurasian Animal Pack is great for the representation it brings, especially for our European playerbase, but other than the swan and tortoise all those species are as useless to me as the Oceania Pack is for many other players. I have my grievances with the Arid Animal Pack, which I don't feel like repeating here because I'm tired of talking about it, but it was at least excellent in the fact it finally fleshed out North Africa and the Middle East. I love the scenery of the Tropical Pack but while I feel the species selection is strong, it's not quite strong enough to stand on its own as a 4+1 scenery pack and does little to address the sore lack of South American species outside of the sloth.
Realised I never actually did my proper ranking for this year:
  1. Oceania Pack - duh, 10/10
  2. Eurasia Animal Pack - Time will tell if me ranking it above Arid is recency bias given the latter actually has a greater number of useful species for me, but the tortoise and especially the swan are some of my favourite additions this year and most of the other animals, even if not for me, feel like needed additions. 7/10
  3. Arid Animal Pack - In spite of some missed opportunities, it provides excellent representation to North Africa and the Middle East as well as very useful species like the dromedary, porcupine and more desert antelopes. 6/10
  4. Tropical Pack - I feel like this keeps falling lower and lower in my rankings unfortunately, I really like the scenery as well as the fossa and water monitor but overall I feel like it's barely impacted my gameplay. The basket ferns, alongside the kentia palms in the free update, are some of my new favourite plants in the game though. 5/10

4. Arid
But it's a close call between 3 and 4. I really like the scenery pieces that were added in the tropical pack but I wasn't a huge fan of the chosen species. For arid pack I liked some of the species (sand cat, Porcupine, addax) but there were indeed too much ungulates. But I still give a strong 7/10 to both packs because I'm just too nice.

  1. Tropical - Great species with beautiful scenery and plants, had a great update alongside it
  2. Oceania - Great species from my homeland of Oceania with great plants, scenery pieces and a good update
  3. Eurasia - Lots of beautiful species, though most I wouldn't ordinarily use, but every species is welcome, and a pretty small update alongside
  4. Arid - I like all the species but there was a lot more potential, a good update, but I put this one at last

You do realize it’s still 2023 and not 24 right?
1. Eurasia: still hasn’t come out yet but I already found myself doing some renovations and additions to areas of my zoos that these new animals can be apart of. Europe feels almost complete now as it hasn’t gotten much attention over since twilight. North Asia needed love. Waterfowl have finally arrived. NA will at least get attention with the wolverines and I guess the mute swan and wild boar. The souviner shop will certainly be used for a long time.
10/10

2. Oceania: this wasn’t an area I had given much thought on but this dlc was a nice surprise. While the theme and animals really will only have use in my Australian zoo, i really liked giving it a make over and new additions. I had been hoping for viewing domes for quite some time now.
8/10

3. Tropical: I have mixed opinions on this dlc. The Scenary I have found use in my Asian zoo as I was able to renovate the SEA section with a proper build. Wanted and loved the inclusion of red river hogs. Wanted more reptiles, im content with the water monitor. Never had an opinion on fossa. I dont care that sloths were added as a WE, even though this is an abnormal pick for type of sloth, I really hope future WE does not include another sloth. Now for my big issue, the lar gibbons, I wanted them since the game started. The siamang was a disappointment to me as it walks more then brachiates, almost as if it wasn’t worth adding without proper brachiation. Months later several of us lost interest and hope for lar gibbons and here they are, while I like their color morphs they are no different then the siamang.
6/10

4. Arid: I was personally disappointed. I was hoping for a world wide desert biome dlc and this is what we got. Majority ungulates that I will never use. I don’t love the porcupine but I will not say anything negative. Love the sand cat and we got our dromedary’s but everything else I have no use for. This would have been an update to incorporate water fountains. 4/10

1. Oceania and nothing comes close. Sure, they may be niche to those outside the region, but to those who build within it 3/5 of these animals are just as essential as a lion or a rhino. It’s basically our version of the Europe pack (pretty much all of those animals were useless to me, but to a European zoo they’re essential.) The kiwi is my favorite animal in the whole game and the little penguin was a very pleasant surprise that I considered essential (the only warm weather penguin kept in the region) and didn’t think we would get. Some of the scenery is way too focused on the American-created/appropriated “tiki culture” for my liking over actual Polynesian art, but that’s not the majority of the scenery and a lot of it’s great. It made the region go from having pretty terrible representation to being pretty good. 8.5/10

2. Eurasia is just kind of okay. Not very diverse and has some not so great animal choices. I’m sure it’ll come in handy if I ever build in Europe though. Literally the only reason it’s above Tropical is because it finally gave us a long awaited waterfowl. 6.5/10

3. Tropical this is another one that’s just fine. There’s nothing outrageously bad here, but nothing with a wow factor either. It’s all just nice additions coupled with a pretty good building set. It feels like filler to me, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I still really like it for what it is. 6.5/10

4. Arid is a bit of a strange case where all of the animals are alright on their own, but as a set it’s just more of the same already well represented groups. It’s not bad, but it’s far from great. 5/10

This year had some highs and lows for me, but aside from Oceania it was just kind of okay. Probably the weakest year for me but that’s not saying much considering it was still pretty great.
It's probably different in new Zealand and the pacific bit in Australia the animals from the europe are pretty common. Like the European Fallow deer is I'm like almost every Petting zoo.

The fallow deer in particular is very common (and, as my favourite ungulate in the game, really helps to elevate the Europe Pack for me) but the only other European mammals kept in Australian zoos aside from domestics are red deer and red fox, and both of them more rarely. It’s a very poorly represented continent in our collections unfortunately.

Oo yeah, I should’ve specified. Fallow deer are sometimes found in NZ too, especially in smaller, lower budget zoos, but most major zoos - albeit not all - have phased them (and frankly invasive deer in general) out. I build in NA sometimes too and fallow deer are sometimes there as well, albeit very, very rarely and usually only in roadside zoos. They’re pretty much the only European species in the game (that aren’t also found in NA) I personally have use for unfortunately aside from the new mute swan.

I love Eurasian most, takin, saiga, wolverine, a swan
Then oceania with Kiwi, Tasmanian Devil and penguin
Then tropical with Red River Hog and Fossa
The arid pack was a let down, Only liked the porcupine in that one
