Is support ending? What do you think?

Yesterday I've watched Rudi's video about the new dlc. He is very certain that this dlc is the last one. I haven't really read about this opinion here too much and I don't want to believe Rudi but he does make some good points (all animals high in the meta wishlist ranking, Frontier planning three new Planet games in the next three years, the community being basically dead (don't really agree with this but ok), the campaign scenarion with Nancy retiring).
I hope he isn't right and I also think that Frontier would've told us if this is the final dlc, wouldn't they? What do you think about this opinion?

For me it would be hard to believe that Frontier would end supporting their most successful game, not in these times with the financial problems of the company, wouldn't make much sense imo. In addition, giving us a (presumably) completely new rig and animation set for a new type of animal (waterfowl) is also kind of contradicting this theory.
Still, I'm a little worried after watching Rudi's video.
By the way, what also interests me: Did Frontier clearly communicated about the last dlc and support ending back in the days of PlanetCoaster? I never played the game, so I don't know but maybe someone here knows how they did it back then.

They didn't say "this is the last dlc", for Planet Coaster. We knew when 3 months came around and there was no DLC that it wasn't going to be developed any further.

I doubt they will end support before having another Planet (or similar) game ready to take over. When(if) PC2 comes, then I imagine PZ will see its last DLC either shortly before or after the release of that. And I believe that is most likely to happen in autumn next year.

Unless the next Planet Coaster ends up being more like a refreshed version of the first game taking it up to a more PZ'ish standard. Then I could see them keeping life in both since one game wouldn't end up feeling much more enjoyable to play than the other, which seems to be the reason a lot of PC players jumped to PZ.
But if that is a likely scenario, I don't know.

If the next Planet game is more like something sport-related or maybe Planet Transport which I have also seen mentioned before, then I don't think there will be a huge overlap in the playerbase so continuing DLCs for PZ could still be an option. Maybe just make the DLCs smaller or only animal packs or something. After all JWE2 and PZ have both gotten support alongside each other for a while now.

But I honestly don't know anything. I just know there is an almost endless amount of animals they can keep on adding to this game as long as there is no other creative zoo-game competition out there. And a decent-sized group of hardcore zoo nerds (like myself) who will keep buying these packs even if they get a bit overprized over time.

I have a few reasons as to why this isn't the last DLC.

First of all, this would be a crummy way to end the game. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome pack, but if this is how it'd end, it'd feel lame. It's clear that Frontier treats this game as their greatest creation (which, so far it is), so the best thing to do is to end it with a bang. Eurasia animal pack isn't really a bang, more like a pop.

Second, there are some better choices than what they did when making the pack. There are some more requested animals. Why would they give us some lesser requested species when it's obvious what the community wanted? They know exactly what we want, so to end it with what we didn't want sounds dumb.

Kinda adding to the 2nd point, demand for Central and South America is high, with Eurasia not being anywhere near Latin America. It'd be a bad move to end it with Eurasia and not expand Latin America.

Also, for some reason people love multiples of 5. Ending something while on the verge of the 5th anniversary sounds weird. If it were up to me, I'd end something closer to the 5th anniversary

Rudi's hypothesis is based on the scenerio description - Nancy is retiring, but it's a secret - I'm not going to lie; I had similar thoughts.

I also suspect that the modular giftshop design is a way for Frontier to bug-test a feature meant for completely different game - Planet Shopping or Planet Museum or something.

But... I also can't see support ending while the game is making money. And that's the crux of it. We don't know if the game is still making enough money to justify its team. We know it's doing well, but we also know that Frontier has other contractual commitments so... IDK

As always, all we can do is buy the dlc and keep loudly posting our wants and desires for future dlc. And be grateful to the devs whatever happebs, because this game is great.

Rudi is great but he got a little bit crazy with his theories lately.

There are some things that may confirm future support:

  • Yearly report for 2023
  • November Business update
  • Existance of the merch store
  • Opening the TicToc account
  • Usage of the most requested species in a more thoughtful way (1 or 2 most requested species in a pack accompanied by less popular ones to leave most popular species for the future packs).
  • New packs filled with less popular species is a proof itself for me that more pack are on the way.
  • Game is still very profitable and the possibilities for future packs and development are nearly endless.

There is really no evidence that this DLC might be the Last. Further with this DLC I am even more the opinion that we could get a further fully year to fullfill the 5th year with a Potential Farewell Pack in December. The DLC itself sounds in no aspect to end of Support. Planning 3 new Planet Games is one Thing. At the end Frontier needs also the money to make them. And this money only can be made by delivering the customers new content. From a financial perspective ending one of the two series which seem to be the most profitable would make no real sense in my opinion. At least if you Not replace one Cash cow directly by the next one.

Different content creators are telling since more than 2 years that the support might end soon. I really do not understand why people still listen to them (in this regard). They know as much as every other people knows.

I see the new pack as the opposite. There’s definitely more DLC ahead. We just got our first waterfowl, we just got a tile expansion system (gift shops), we have a flying rig that works well, we have more guest/animal interactions, people want more South American animals, people want flying birds, they want an overhaul to the exhibit system and petting zoos. I thinks at least one of those is in the future and hopefully imo it’s birds and and aviaries as a new type of exhibit.

Of course it’s all speculation. I’m 100% happy with continuing to receive more terrestrial birds because we already have birds with flight capability in game that don’t fly. I’m just happy to get any new animals and features really ha ha. But if they announce a PZ2 I’ll also be happy.

But for the love of god I hate hearing we didn’t get birds, you mean flying birds! The swan, kiwi, and little penguin are birds! - sorry pet peeve /rant lol

Totally agree with this. Plus I don't know but I think there wasn't livestream DLC announcement for the other games. Here it's different. I guess (I hope) that when they release their last DLC they will openly say that this is the last one.

I think there's about 2-4 more packs left. Other planet games released had larger DLCs for one last cash grab, and that's not what this was. This does seem lik the beginning of the end though, especially with regional packs coming back. Probably get a DLC for North America, South America, Africa, and then a finale. Or, alternatively, a combined Americas pack, and then a finale in summer is possible.

Personally, I think the end game will surpass the 200 animal mark. One more year of support will get us past 200. It might or might not be an even number, but its possible the devs have had “200 animals” as a stretch goal when the game first came out.
