How do ship engineers get in and out of their rooms?

When you visit a ship-modules engineer on-foot in their base, they're standing alone in a room just off your hangar with no exits.

There are steps up from your ship's landing pad to where lift doors normally lead to the concourse. However, here they just lead to storage shelves.

So how do the engineers get to and from this room?

It doesn't look like the room moves or has any removable panels.

Why do they need a desk?

The on-foot ones must be real, as one of them asks me to leave a pizza on the desk...

But... there's no ship on the pad... except mine?

Maybe they're chauffered.
