setting up coop sessions

After having spent nearly 1500 hours single player in ED/O a friend of mine decided to give EDO a shot (he‘s aware of the learning curve). We both are totally new to the multiplayer aspect of Elite and since there is no „official manual“ on this topic we wasted several hours on a trial/error approach.

We tried to start a planetary coop mission from Chamberlain‘s Rest, managed to travel together in my Python but at the destination he couldn‘t exit the ship, remaining locked in the Gunner role. He was still part of the Team/Crew and our mission was shared. The only option was to release him from the Team - which resulted in the game kicking him from my instance and make him reappear in Chamberlain‘s Rest.

So what is a good way to set up such missions properly (i.e. create Crews/Teams) for activities on ground or in space, who does what (i.e. instantiate a session, picks a mission compatible for sharing - I noticed we were not shown the same missions on the consoles in Chamberlain‘s Rest despite being in a Team).

I know this is a pretty complex question but we are happy about any insight or tipp on this matter! Thanks.

first of all your friend should enter your ship on foot if you want to travel together, but net coding here is bad. Couple of bad broken packets and your friend might find him/herself in center of Sagittarius A...or stranded alone on a planet hundreds of light years away from you, without shippya and SRVya (happened to me once :D) Also missions: take "Wing" labeled or just different ones in same location (doesn't really matter - will be fun doing chains of missions actually)? It's up to you and your friend(s) to decide. When I'm playing with my friends, we always move on our own ships to prevent strange game's behaviour. Let the weakest wing member lead the group, others just follow and in case things go hot - you can react fast and drop near interdiction AO. As far as I understood - he used Telepresence option, that's why he was kicked? Oh also use forum's "search" button, type "forming wing" and you'll get some interesting threads with helpful info. Fly safe, happy and not hungry please :giggle: 💐

Yeah, safer to actually turn up in your own ships. As pointed out sharing ships can be hazardous. At least meet in the station in the target system if you really want to take the same ship, then hopefully if something goes wrong they just end up at the station.

Just pick a place and you both go there in your ships. If you are geographically close you will probably instance. That chance goes up if your are friends (in game). And goes up again if you are in a wing/team. But nothing can be guaranteed.

The mission board is based on your rank and rep. So unless you are both in identical situations with all factions it's not going to be the same.

Any Ody mission can be shared (so I've heard, never actually tried it myself). Only wing missions can be shared for ships.

nah no need to postpone surface operations (as like any other activity you choose) , he can practice on his way to missions. Kill two with one stone, as they say :D Also you can help your friend - mine or buy some void opals or something similar, meet about 15-20 kilometers of any station (to prevent NPCs from stealing cargo) buying those cutie little stones, jettison them (don't drop all at once, only some, so your friend will have time to collect all) and let your friend gather by Limpetyas or by himself (good practice of flying too actually) and sell. Or, if you have Carrya - set buying order of any thingie and let your friend sell something to you for needed sum. Don't forget to set landing restrictions to only friends tho or someone could take advantage of situation :D Also there are couple of groups, helping other players specifically with money, mats etc raids. And maybe on forum here people may help too. With addition Spire Sites I think 90% of players already multi-billionaires :D If you don't like asking for help, you can make good money with ExoBiology and scanning systems too. Bubble is full of these and it's also good experience gaining -flying shippya, landing, using UI etc

Hahah I like the idea with the Void Opals- jump starting his financials this way. Besides I haven’t core mined in a long time…. No carrier for me, I hate the maintenance.

It also sounds a bit like you were maybe in multicrew telepresence mode? Like, you can multicrew by joining a session via comms menu, which "teleports" you to the other player's ship instantly, and you can enter another player's ship on foot.
Only in the latter version you're physically on the ship and can exit it on foot elsewhere.
If you multicrewed via menu your friend's character isn't really on your ship physically.

Looks like telepresence didn't work as expected - we tried multiple times. Picking/choosing various mentoring or coop modes always resulting in him not finding me as a mentor. After getting thrown back to Chamberlain's Rest he never was returned to my instance of the game. Also, the option to exit my ship was never given to him. He was just sitting right next to me in my Python with access to his panels but no "middle menu" - similar to riding an Apex shuttle.

I've just come across Rusty Dog's video where he's playing with a friend. Only he's not talking about how to set up the coop game (which imo was rock stable by the way)... key seems to be arriving in your own ship on location.

We did say you had to go the same place in your own ships.

Multicrew is a ... weird thing that was created to allow people to play in the same ship before people could get out of their ships. They are in fact telecommuting to a position in your ship via space internet. They are not actually on your ship so they can't leave it.

1. Both players fly to the same station.
2. Both players meet inside station concourse
3. One player invites the other to a Team.
4. Either player finds one mission they wish to do co-op.
5. That same player goes to the transactions panel and selects "share mission".
6. Both players travel on the elevator to the same ship
7. Both players enter the same ship.
8. Both players are now in the ship, and have a mission shared. Now you can both exit on foot/srv at the target location.

As others said, multicrew can be dodgy sometimes. Port forward beforehand if you can, it does help. Only one mission can be shared and unlike ship missions, once the objective is complete you can no longer share it so mission stacking Odyssey missions is not a thing for Teams. You have to hand the single mission in before starting the next.

If your friend is going to fly their own ship, the only thing that changes is ignore steps 6 and 7.

In the social menu there is an option called "Invite to Crew". If you do this, a hologram version of the other player will be brought into your ship. Since their physical body is in a different location, they can't get out or use the SRV. "Invite to Team" is the option you want to use, no holograms involved.

If you use the multicrew matchmaking section, that is the same as Invite to Crew - it is all holograms. It was implemented when Odyssey didn't exist, and multicrew was designed for players to just drop in and drop out whenever they want. It's still an option for ship-based activities but is fully useless for Odyssey content.

My Source for all this: I have done many base restore missions by taking a friend in the copilot seat of my Cobra, I have done a good amount of Odyssey content co-op. It is very fun, even though it feels limited by the one-at-a-time mission structure.

Thank you very much. This SOP is quite similar to what we did. In fact we tried it your way but he couldn't enter the elevator to my ship for some reason.

Once I was in my Python, we created a Team/Crew, he appeared as a crew member next to me and I was given the option to share up to 4 missions. I shared the one I had chosen in the lobby. We arrived at the destination, I exited my ship, but he couldn't.

We'll try again soon.

Oh by the way: as a Crew member he was "idle" until I made him gunner. Is there a way to unassign this role? We assumed because of his gunner role he might be locked in this position and thus unable to exit the ship...

He has to board your ship on foot. If he doesn't do that, and he joins your ship via invite, he will always be a hologram and won't be able to exit.

You have to take separate elevators, the game won't let 2 people use the same one, but if you "Invite to Team" he can select your ship from the elevator menu.

The positions in multicrew are Idle, Gunner and Fighter. Gunner gives access to 3rd person camera when not in supercruise, and fighter gives access to ship launched fighters. For Odyssey stuff, probably dont need to use either. The only thing that locks you into the ship is if you are a hologram. If you aren't a hologram, you can exit the ship.

Sharing multiple missions works for ships, but not Odyssey on-foot missions I believe where it is limited to 1.

If he wants to exit your ship on foot he must enter it on foot using the same blue circle you use.

Thanks, that explains a lot. He obviously wasn't physically present on my ship, that's why LOL.

They might have increased this to 4 (which would be nice), but I'll check that again.
You were offered 4 missions to share when he was a Hologram is how I read your post, that would make those missions Horizon ones.

Crew and Team use two entirely different game mechanics, and correct me if I mixed them up but:

Crew = Other player is only telepresent on your ship and is able to fly your SLF or take Gunner role and cannot disembark. It works with Legacy, H-4.0 and EDO and feels really disconnected.

Team = Other player is "physically" in your ship/station/planet and can disembark with you. You need to be in the same station and your friend has to walk out to your ship and board as usual. SLF and other roles don't work and is mainly used for on-foot combat and hanging out in the bar together. This only works if both are running Odyssey.

I use Teams to fly my Son around to find G3 suits and guns for him at the Pioneer stores (while he plays Modern Combat on his phone of course). 🙄

It would be awesome if they would just combine the two somehow. They still confuse me after all this time and it's very time consuming switching between them.

Team has all the same features as Crew. The only downside of boarding as a Team instead of Crew is that you must physically be in the same location in game.

According to the ED Wiki „Team“ replaced „Wing“ with the inception of Odyssey and also includes ground missions. This is what my friend and I will try next time.
