Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

When I say it's very barren, I'm purely talking in terms of actual players.
I was aware of that. And aside from some moments where I have seen other players during special events, I usually also tend to not see many players where I'm going in open.
But I do know they are out there. I can talk to them, even if I should be playing in solo.
Many many.
That's quite a bit. Spread over different instances, as well...

And nowadays, after the release of luxury RVs, they don't necessarily need a home base anymore.

Not to mention all the commanders out in the black, somewhere in the far reaches of the galaxy.

I finally hit the halfway point, this is going to take some time, I've got a healthy respect for those who made Elite V in ship-to-ship combat.

Found a curious interaction between red wine and an opalescent tumbler and felt compelled to log in for reasons...

Anyway, since I was inspired to go grab my cutter again, I took it off to a surface port under thargoid attack to test a theory.

Short version, man the bugs really want to hyperdict me today. On the way in and on the way out. Fortunately my cutter has maximally engineered thrusters and managed to get away from the buggers cleanly.

Found 2 missions to transport injured folks, plus one set of evacuees all paying in Neofabric Insulation for the CG. Totalled 157 tons by the end. Obviously filled the ship with everything else available which was at least a solid few million credits and some decent materials.

This did however take a while of constant engagement, not least because refugees and injured people now seem to come in groups of 5-15 and that's a lot of clicking at each end just to go through and claim the mission reward. For curiosity's sake I'm going to go sit at a station that produces Ion Distributors and just see how fast it ticks up. Happily one of them feels very familiar and might well be from the original 1984 Elite. Which I got around to playing about 1991 but that's because my dad didn't really see the point of a "home computer" before then 😹

Not sure I ever saw a CG with a reward that made me feel - oooh, I must have me a one of those.

Pre-engineered FSDs or heatsinks with extra ammo tend to get my attention most 😸

Why should you be playing in solo?
I think CMDR Timber McWolf just meant you can talk to other players in local chat, even if you happen to be in Solo Mode yourself.

The itchy feet have got me, and I'm headed down Pleiades way. Took a slight detour to stop off at the Jameson crash site (HIP 12099) - I don't recall ever visiting before, it seemed apropos.

The local star was low to the horizon, making for some atmospheric lighting.

I cheesed the data transmitters there and have parked up a couple systems over to continue my journey next session.

I remember something about a crashed Anaconda somewhere too that you could get engineering mats from. I never did take the time to locate it, it was right after I fell for the Hutton run to get my own free Annie, I figured it was just another n00b initiation scav hunt, once bitten twice shy.

I did hear if you can get a first footfall of a blackhole you get a free Corvette.

Why should you be playing in solo?
Well, I did for about a year. As soon as I left the Pilots' Federation area, I made sure I was in solo. Back then, I had what you could almost call a gankerphobia. But there was a lot of stuff that scared me in that time. Hence me strictly using the ADC, unless a ship I bought came without and I had to find a station that had the module in stock...

This is how i was with my brand new, shiny Anaconda (back around mid 2018 iirc) - remarkably enough, i bought it (eventually after saving away just enough from many stacked data courier missions and even significant extra cash from “road-to-riches” pseudo-exploration) and flew it out of the station on the maiden voyage without incident…

Then, having used the docking computer to enter the next station, i loaded up, took off and got stuck in the mail slot and then the cage even i think, as i panicked and oversteered frenetically, not realising the whole problem was due to not keeping the ship “level” on station exit, watching the launch clock seconds tick away… and boom, there i was with a re-bought ’Conda and not enough cash for even one more rebuy…

So, back to my trusty Python i went, briefly considering selling it for more Conda rebuy (but fortunately realising that that would’ve no doubt been the road to ruin…), then stacking many more data (could’ve also been beer for the Perez Ring Brewery as i did quite a bit of that in the early days) courier missions to build up conda-rebuy cash…

After that i started flying the shiny big new ship again - after all, it upped my cargo capacity considerably and the pirates that seemed to harrass my Python relentlessly had become noticeably quieter since the change of ship - but painstakingly planning every journey so that i would not have to even try fly the beast out through a mail slot ever again… yep, I’d only launch from planetary ports and go to the lengths of calling in another ship to fly to another port where i could call the conda if i’d had to deliver goods to an orbital station…

Fortunately enough for me at the time, Advanced docking computer, with the ability to launch as well as dock, was released not too long after… :D

These days i actually fly it through on manual sometimes, just for a bit of a thrill :]

A loaded 'Conda? That would be impossible today.

I’d do the delivery in the ’conda, using the (original, non-advanced, docking-only) docking computer - then actually call a smaller ship in to fly to a surface port with shipyard where I could recall the beast… 😅

I was so happy/relieved when advanced auto-dock was released that I promptly went out and bought a Beluga - I’ve still never flown that whale of a thing through a mail slot on anything but auto tho ;]

There are/were several crashed and abandoned Anacondas lying around that you can find stuff at, the famous one with the nearby wrecked SRV is Bugkillers but I don’t have the location with me.
The Cannon people have a whole section on wrecks etc.

Heavy.
