Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Odyssey abandoned the whole newbie area. You no longer start there. It's normal.

The permit-locked stations still exist but only Horizons starts use them.

If you start in Odyssey, you do the on-foot tutorial, and are dumped in the HIP 97950 system at Chamberlin's Rest.

Some people think this is a bad thing. I'm not one of them. I always thought the newbie area was poorly done and caused more confusion than anything. :)
The newbie area might not be perfect, but I spent quite some time there before I headed out into the wild. I learned a lot there, just playing around with what I could get there. I collected enough bounties to unlock Tod McQuinn, which was the first engineer I visited. As I had no clue about where to find the stuff to unlock Felicity, I went on a journey to unlock Elvira instead.

Apparently being in a hurry of completing missions because you are one greedy CMDR when it comes to patrol routes can lead you to forget little details like gravity.

That's how someone I know very well, with a brand new Python he doesn't know the reactions, with a few expensive modules not upgraded yet, kinda left orbital flight with quite a bit of pitch down angle and spamming the boost.
Only when he heard atmospheric cracking sounds he knew he screwed up something, and bothered look at te 2.3g indication.

Long story short, there is now a burnt print the exact size of a python on the surface of said planet.

Of course I won't name the pilot in order not to shame mysel... Oh well...
I think a lot of us have been there. Maybe not that specific planet, but I think there are a lot of high gravity worlds out there that have similar markings on their surface.
Some even manage this without the assistance of high gravity.

Those Brians Thugs guys don't like me at all, they attack me on sight, those pecker heads even laid an ambush for me. An Annie was lying dead in space (I thought it was my Mulligan), as soon as I opened up on it five more red blips popped up on RADAR. I had to boost like mad and jump into super cruise, I've done about a dozen slaughter contracts on them and they don't appreciate my enthusiasm and zeal for my work.:)

I didn't know I was in the n00b area, didn't know it existed until I got a message that all my delivery contracts said they had failed and I got a bunch of fines. In fact, I think that one of my very first posts in this forum (don't remember for sure) was about why that happened.

I have bi-weaves on my jump-conda and bounced real good once and sense then I always check the gravity in the body info, real close to a rebuy though. I think I had about 10% hull integrity left and had to hi-tail it to a DSSA carrier (no limpets) to make repairs.

Back when I was very new to ED and the forums there was a video capture made by some player or group, they had landed on Achenar 3 and somehow enticed a lot of commanders to come down and join them.

The video showed a lot of ships falling out of the sky and going splat as their commanders failed to allow for how exacting even a mere 6.8g landing can be.

I always try to remember to check the gravity before I land anywhere fortunately while exploring there is a little reminder in that the number of probes needed to map a world relates to its size so the more probes needed the more care needed when landing.

Mooching around the Pleiades, checking ou the sights - which where mostly in darkness - most inauspicious!

First, a crashed Thargoid ship on Maia A 3 A:

I say 'A crashed Thargoid...' because man, these guys fly worse than me:

Then it was a quick hop next door to see Barnacles on Merope 5 C:

Always good to see The Bloop!

This was at the site marked 'Barnacle 1' by the nav data, but the co-ords did not match the first ever located barnacle. Temptation to flit around the planet visiting Barnacles until I found 'The First Barnacle' was fleeting. A Barnacle site on the same planet was close enough for me

A quick jaunt over the horizon brought me to Prof Palin's old place:

palinbase1.jpg

A bit wreckage strewn these days.

And echoing eerily with Thargoid sounds... almost as if there was some hidden containment facility that still held one...

Curiously, you can still enter the hangar bay, but there are no services active:

palinbase2.jpg

It didn't occur to me to try and disembark. Probably for the best, given the Thargoid noises!

Then it was a short trip to HIP 17125 (A3) to have a gander at the first crashed Thargoid Scout ever found:

crash3.jpg

All in darkness again.

The Scout looked more detailed than I remember:

crash2.jpg

I want to catch this one in daylight, so I've parked up and will hope next time I log in it's on the sunward side!

Despite all the menacing 'Nonhuman Signal Sources' lttered liberaly around each system, I saw no active Thargoid activity, even when I sat in the dark at the Barnacle site for the better part of an hour. It was also fun to be able to hop out of my vehicles and take a closer look at all of these features.

do some wars for squadron and a little bit of PP to get the merits up....107 so far.between open and pg mode. it great actully opening fire on a dbx in open mode (npc) only. didn't seee anyone there. althought the systems seems to be full of carriers?.

warzone completed.
PP just starting now , hope i got it worked out right.or i just wasted 100 merits on a system that no body wants. took out one npc with the aid of two Npc friends.he was chewing up my shields like there was no tomorow , but the npc friends chew his shields down and i let him play with 2 heat seekers missiles :).

Looks like the 'disembark' option was greyed out, so you wouldn't have been able to.
Maybe for the best.

Woke up to 700 tons of CG commodity in the station reserve, plus 500 in my inventory from yesterday... the worker droids have been busy overnight! Shipped both loads.

But having now come home from work, only 7 tons available so I guess other people have been shopping here while I was out.

I will continue to afk this CG for science. Just curious how well I can do with bare minimum effort 😹

I've closed the chapter (with a bookmark) on my less-than-legal underpinnings. Cleansed by the Colonial suds of space,

I made about half my bankroll on crime and owe it alot, perhaps. Can't forget my roots and all

Well, I've always wanted to turn over a new leaf morally and associated it with moving to Colonia. But I'm going to take one more exploration trip here, focus on geology, and call it a vacay. Then head on home - current plan is to start an ambiguous temporary agency, closing the doors of my law-disabiding privateer esque first company (the 12:30 instigation agency). I am pretty sure it will be called PENNY TEMPS now

Just experienced something a bit scary: I was looking something on my control menus while sitting in the Apex, when I came back to game, the Adder just ended the inertial flight, but something went wrong: she exited that the rear end FIRST.

The pilot fought the commands the best he could, but we crashed with such kinetic energy, by the time I reacted and try to make a sceenshot, we were already on the process of being a vapourised Apex meteorit. :ROFLMAO:
I was supposed to eliminate one person, not to wipe out the entire facility. Unless... that is the secret new feature of Elite? Kinetic weapons of mass destruction?

Well tell that distracted Apexer to keep their eyes on the HUD, and not be looking over at your GalMap, CMDR Ryder7!! :p

The tip about keeping in mind the size (surface area) of the planet by how many probes it shot, I like to explicitly second that tip. A year or so ago I used to glance the number and level out a few kilometers in the air, then get a feel for it before the final descent. By hitting the down thrusters for a short amount then holding the up thrusters, and how far did I actually sink? But I do that less anymore, it's more like before planets had a color and a body type, but now it's a 3-tuple including a rough idea of the size, that helps. On my ship (only got 1) without a DSS, the lack of DSS jogs my memory to just look at its properties on the system map before the descent

Sorry, I'll quit disserting, but if you go out onto the surface and read our words to the burn print.. I think the unnamed pilot might hear somehow. Oh. I think I know. Not to "name and shame" them but you're talking about that same Apex driver, I see, eh, eh

They get so mad sometimes when ya keep killing em. Uh, factions, people, etc. I mean.

I had Galactic Aerospace soooo mad at me last month. I think the only reason they didn't tail me to Colonia was CAUSE THEY WERE SHORT ON UNEXPLODED PILOTS at the time.

By the way, when I was in middle school, physically I mean (still am mentally..), ...I believe the preferred vernacular was peckerheads (one word). Yeahhh I love callin crap peckerheads

So it does - answer was right there in front of me the whole time :ROFLMAO:
Ya only had to click your ruby magnetic contact boots together, and hotfoot it over to the elevator the whole time, CMDR Dorothy SpaceGoblin!

Did a nice panel cut, but the satellite leaning slightly, it got stuck a couple inches instead of falling completely. Tried SC in/out, but still the same:

"That's fine, I'm gonna try science." i said to myself.

But many scientific tests later...

...the panel won.
I had a similar experience once. I cut the panel and it fell off as expected. However, there was another panel underneath and that would not cut. Most heinous.

I'm plugging away at CZ's still. Just can't seem to get enough of the state of the art bang bangs.

Been here for 7 hours, still only used 2/3 of my 680t capacity. Never seen more than 27 tons produced in a tick.

Either production is utterly random or I will wake up tomorrow and again find a large backstock - which just tells me that the FC parked nearby belongs to someone who also has to sleep. Neither confirmation is useful, ngl.

But it's fine because I've not actually had time to play the game anyway. It's mostly just an exercise to prove that not playing isn't any worse than working your tail off 😹
