Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

My favourite kind of exchange...

It is surprising that after 10+ years they have yet to release an actual game.

Do you not realize how long games are developed? This was just public because it's been alpha since day 1. That's why it seems like it's taking forever.

Rubbish. I work in the industry, SC is a circus and the Chief Robber is the one who benefits from all that crap.

Oh and as a chaser ;)

"This was back in 2013 when Chris Roberts wasn't a total laughing stock in the industry"
You are about a decade late.

Lol, only just spotted this...

Looks a lot like the cinematic trailer for ED that everyone likes to trash. But at least the ships in that trailer exist in game. :p
Except those cinematic trailers for ED are just that - cinematic trailers, having nothing to do with the real gameplay.

The SC trailers, on the other hand, are always a montage of situations that really happened in the organic, living, breathing universe created by Chris(C) Roberts(TM).

I know this is old but this is really funny to see on a Frontier forum given the drama ED:Odyssey brought after its release and the number of players that <wink>very nicely</wink> asked critics not to go too hard on it.

Its quite possible for one thing to be bad and another thing to be bad as well. They are not mutually exclusive.

Also, Odyssey got rightly roasted for the performance of Odyssey, performance that even now is not up to scratch, although it has somewhat improved.

And here's the real difference, FD couldn't hide behind the alpha label indefinitely. They had a short alpha period, where feedback was given, then, regardless of the state, they had to release. People had paid for it. Unlike SC, where people are expected to pay and pay again, and CIG can continue to hide behind the shield of "ITS ALPHA!"

To date, CIG have taken in over 100x what they said they could make the initial pitch for (The best damn space sim ever!), they have taken in over 10x what they said they could deliver the expanded scope for, and they still haven't delivered on the scope of the original pitch, yet backers are expected to continue giving them more money, for who knows how many more years! And CIG continues to hide behind the alpha shield.

Trying to equate the disaster that was Odyssey's release with the disaster that is Star Citizen is just hilarious.

I'm also not sure what you mean by the last part. Both forums have fans and critics, but i don't see anything wrong with suggesting people wait for release before being overly critical with Odyssey's alpha, since it was of limited duration. If Odyssey had been in alpha for years, and FD kept asking people to pay for it over and over again, then it would have been a different matter.

I don't think many of us were too critical of CIG in the first couple of years after the kickstarter. Development takes time, we all know this. Its when the discrepancy between what CIG was saying and what CIG was doing became apparent that the criticism started and the laughter at the backers who would use the "You can't criticize SC, its alpha" as it became more and more laughable.

Not sure it's that funny when you consider Odyssey PC alpha ran for just a few weeks from March 29, 2021 to May 5, 2021 yet the Star Citizen "Alpha" has been bought into for hard cash since the Kickstarter and playable in unstable "ALPHA" (plz no criticism) form since 29th of August 2013.

Is it an "Alpha" testing phase if there's no transition into a release? It just becomes an excuse for developers to avoid accountability.
