Ten Ton Hammer- ED needs social tools

Interesting article, and one that I more or less agree with 100%. I know they have announced 6 player wide open mic conversation which is an (unusual) step in the right direction, why can't they just provide system/station chat that can be toggled on/off? If this article is anything to go by then the critics are gonna have a field day with the game. Also the lacc of comms will almost certainly turn away lots of newcomers to the game that expect such things in a modern multiplayer experience. Any other views on the subject out there?

Because you shouldn't have to. Social functions should be provided in game, the ability to communicate and find like minded pilots to talk to ratherthan randomly hailing people and hope they reply. Also, the game will just end up being even more niche if newcomers get turned off the game in droves. Where would that lead the expansions and continual development of the game? In the hands of another kickstarter campaign maybe??

Social functions are included. You can make friends, fly together, chat with each other, talk with each other (and soon as groups) and make groups, and ignore people.

What more do you want? Why do you want it? What will it do?

Social this, social that.. to hell with it! :p
I want to have a good game experience, and other people yelling in my ear is NOT contributing to that.
If you wanna be social go sit on Facebook or talk on Skype, jeeez. I'm sick of all this social focus these days.

You can use voive on vent or teamspeak for group play. In quite a few other games I've seen chat is mostly for spam or scamming, but having chat channels you can join for various things including live help from other players seems to me to be essential.

I would argue that they are NOT included. one on one comms has more or less died, i've used it once, and been hailed once. Noone is interested in playing together. So we need a way to find other pilots who want to play in game. you can add friends, but unless you can get on the same server as them, good luck with that one. Ignore people? you don't even require that option in ED at the moment as no one bloody answers msgs anyway and I don't blame them, I want to play with commanders who actually want to play together. Like I said the press will go to town on this and it will hurt the game.

Do you have friends who play Elite? Why not phone them for advice? Or even better, get them round for a lanparty with pizza and beer and socialise :) you know, the real sort, with real people.

I could, but other than visiting the forums, how am I meant to find people to play with without leaving the gameworld? What if i don't want to join a teamspeak server and only want to play a quick mission with another interested commander?

Don't really appreciate your tone, implying that I don't have real friends. nice. I only know one mate who has played the Beta, and is holding out for...guess what..

I just don't get why people are so against it, and you get mocked for even suggesting it. Leaving the game and browsing a forum, posting an add for a group is more immersion breaking than someone spamming chat with crappy jokes.

An open chat would break immersion in a way that ED is obviously trying to avoid. I think the current social functions are more than enough.

I agree 100% whit you. the HELL whit all that.

It would even be cool if each player could activate a beacon of sort to let other player know they are available for communication or something like that.
