Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

After a couple of hours of being released under Evo NDA, 3.23 is now Wave 1, cue streamers showing us how it is

Oh sweet, that means we get the proto engineering test streamed too :)

Here's a quicker summary though :)

  • AI found a skewed rhombus volume for navigation grids on planets, but they're not sure how to connect them together
  • There's some temporary tech debt for hull penetration coz they're bored of waiting for Maelstrom
  • Instanced Hangars / Cargo Elevators are built on transit tech, needs to do loads of things transit can't currently do (like dynamic destinations), and when they're finished the transit tech needs a refactor...
  • Vulkan is 'beta' because it sometimes makes performance worse
  • Currently trying to figure out how Planet Tech v5 will work. And how it will work with Server Meshing...

On and on it goes...

It's clown shoes all the way down 😁

It's worse than that, way, way worse, just got an update for Squadron 42;

Welcome to March’s Squadron 42 development report. Enclosed you will find details on the latest progress made across the campaign, including planetary tech, ship behaviors, and fluff terminals.

The Planet Tech team started work on Planet Tech v5, with initial focus on the groundwork required to set up spatial partitioning. They’re currently deciding how this will work with Server Meshing and server-crash recovery. The devs also introduced the concept of ‘default planets’ for the internal editor so that it’s trivial for anyone to create and use a planet for testing.

Ok, they have just started work on Planet Tech v5 as part of Squadron 42, what? Squadron 42 was supposed to be a campaign mode, why the heck are they working on planet tech in what should essentially be a scripted event, planet tech is a major part of the game, not something they should be doing an SQ42.

Deciding how it will work with server meshing? What is this, Server Meshing is, well, basic tech, everything should be designed with server meshing as the basis, you don't work on something, then after the fact of making it decide how it will work with server meshing, that's like designing a media deck unit for a car then deciding how it's going to fit into the dashboard after it's complete, doesn't work!

Default planets, again note this is Squadron 42, this isn't something they should be even looking at, they should have been involved in creating scripted action sequences and cut scenes, AI interaction yeah give them that and etc, not designing planets, this clearly indicates that Squadron 42, far from being nearly feature complete, it's probably pre-alpha or not even that!

Yep, clown shoes, I give it 2 years and maybe people will see a demo of SQ42!

Server meshing in a single player game?

Server meshing in a single player game?

Well yes there is that, but of course SQ42, like Solo in ED, is actually based in the full game but separated by some dodgy code (I assume it's dodgy code because, well, it's Star citizen) so what they are actually saying is, server meshing isn't working, because if it was it would work for SQ42 exactly the same way it works (well doesn't work) in the multiplayer game, only with a single player instead of many players.

I think that's just Report mis-wiring. The tech guys often report the same stuff in both the SC and SQ42 report. That one probably shouldn't have made it over. (The focus of v5 seems to be zapping out all the 100 systems SC is so far from achieving...)

But if SQ42 really is intending to use v5, then yeah, they're boned 😁

My head tells me another April Fool's just fell down the uncanny valley ;)

We’ve always prided ourselves on being at the forefront of technical innovation, but also, on including a degree of scientific accuracy that grounds Star Citizen’s sci-fi universe in the realm of the (somewhat) plausible. Planet Tech V5 marks a significant step forward on both the tech and accuracy fronts. Coming to the ‘verse in an upcoming Patch, all major orbital bodies will be adjusted to reflect a profound scientific truth that can be ignored no longer – flat planets & moons.

We’re so excited to finally share this plan with you. Yes, we know that we just came out with Planet Tech V4… but we don’t see this as feature creep. This is a key pillar of the game and is a crucial change. The team has been full steam ahead on this for quite some time and can’t wait to rid the ‘verse of the spherical inaccuracies that currently plague it. We know that this revelation may come as a shock to some fans and backers – the topic of planetary sphericity is hotly debated amongst the top scientific minds of our modern world- and while many of you may remain skeptical, we’re sure that in time you’ll come around and end up on our level.
