1000MB to 1 GB

1000GB to 1 TB
400,000 TB
2TB Drives
200,000 x 2 TB Drives @ 1 MB data per system.
thats a lotta HDD's

At 10 minutes per stop your looking at 27,777,777,777.78 days (76,103,500.76 years) of non stop play to visit each one for 10 minutes lol

It's a lot less than that. I imagine their solar system data is a text file looking something like this: star 1 (orbit null), planet 1 (orbit a), planet 2 (orbit b), planet 2 moon 1 (orbit c) and so on where a/b/c are equations of motion. With small text files like that, you can cover the biggest systems in game in only a few kb's. Now yeah, there are graphics too but those graphics are recycled over and over. Each star/planet/moon has a set of dimensions and a skin applied to it. The skin is universal for that object variant. All metal planets look exactly the same even if their sizes are different. You shouldn't confuse a giant in game universe with lots of data. Like real life space, it's mostly empty.

But what about when we start landing on planets and recording peoples ships that are stored at space stations and so on...

I know its procedurally generated and so on but the number of variables that do and will exist as the game progresses its going to get bigger and bigger…

The galaxy is extremely sparse and they do not need to store the data that can be generated again. So basically only the things some human player is seeing need to be stored. Instead of having a record of the “contents” of every 400 billion systems, they can have an algorithm to generate each system on demand, and only store the human player locations and NPCs/markets recently “seen” by humans.

Thus the amount of storage required depends primarily on the number of human players, not the number of solar systems.

The truth is it will never be that big, it won't even be half that size. They're only generated when someone visits it. They just say that as marketing ploy just like offline mode.

Hell, it won't even be a millionth the size... But the algorithms are in place for generating the 400b stars our galaxy is believed to be made of.

But yes, lets turn this in to yet another "QQ no offline" thread. :(

One thing I like to point out. If elite in 1984 had 2048 stars using one 5 inch floopy. What can they do with technology of today. Which a normal Email uses more space then a floopy 30 years ago.

I understand that the server back-end of this will be phenomenal, as will the level of data transaction to keep track of even procedurally generated star systems - bear in mind, that these are all (quite obviously to anyone who's played the game) part of an operational economy.

They put real people into real space back in the days of rockets, using less computing power than we have in a single smartphone, which is already nearly better than a Star Trek tricorder. Certainly better than the comms that could barely reach a stationary orbital ship. Computers be doin stuff.

nevermind forget i made the thread..

i know how procedural generation works, I get that most of the 400B solar systems will never get visited thats a simple reality even with a million players playing non stop it would take more than 76 years of non stop play to have every system visited, however if you think about it the amount of data to have even a tenth of the entire galaxy recorded will be stupendious.

I would assume that after a system is generated it will have to be recorded not regenerated the next time someone visits

I also assume that once the advanced features are inplace like landing on planets, exploreing stations ect will lead to a little more than a 2kb text file for each system and so on

it was more of a thought experiment, but meh off to the stars

In Frontier: Elite II they had 100,000,000,000 stars in 2 disks (or actually 1 I think) (880 kB size floppy disks). So it does not take much space.

I would like to point out something. Let take World or Warcraft 10 Million Subscriber. Now how much space dose each toon have, How many toons do they have. Then I guess they have houses and Bank vualt space.

Just guessing on how much space but I can use Lord of the rings online space because that what I play

Each toon can hold 150 items. The vault can hold over 400 Items. There also a Shared Vault that can hold 150 items.

Your worried about Elite dangerous.

Let not forget if they have Homes in the game. That has Vault space 150 spaces.

Then kinship or Clans that have 300 spaces.

Then Items that decorate both Clans and homes inside and out.
