No Single Player Offline Mode then? [Part 2]

There are several valid reasons for not wanting to play online, I've read more than I can remember. I, for one, have no interest in online gaming. Call me old fashioned, call me misanthropic (you'd probably be right), but for me a game is a personal experience that I do not wish to share with other people. I'd rather replay Deus Ex or Planescape: Torment for the millionth time than play an MMO. It's a matter of tastes: I just don't like it (and not just me by the way - take a look at the other 10001 post thread and you'll see). I don't want any external influence in my games, no matter how imperceptible. I realize and respect that this may be a difficult gaming philosophy to comprehend for some, but I am not asking for my view to be shared by anyone, I merely ask that it be respected and accepted without questioning it. I don't think I have to justify why I like the gaming style I like any more than why I prefer blue over red, rock over rap, women over men or football over cricket. It's just what I like.

Ok, this I can understand and in all honesty, the game needs life and expansions in order to survive. We have to move with the times no matter how much we dislike that part of the process in order to keep things alive in a much broader scope. These days, it's all about the online, social, teamwork fun. A group or gathering, shall we say. I've never said what others feel are invalid, but to throw it all away on mere prinicipal or pouting, come on. Few game designers achieve what they promise on release, look at all major titles and patches that follow. I might be wrong about that part, but wasn't solo mode singleplayer, it was last I checked. Things just update to reflect changes in the galaxy or factions.

Shok.

You are 100% correct! Give people their refund and most of us if not all will be gone!

I haven't touched the beta since the bad news came out, and have already completely lost any interest - anything Braben and Frontier is now leaving a really sour taste in my mouth, and I don't even bother reading their newsletter any more.

I do not want to deal with unreliable companies, and also hope something will happen which will allow us to get a refund.

The fact is this discussion is irrelevant because they arent going to do a single player offline mode and if they ever do it would be a whole other game several years away. I do feel bad for the people who wont be able to play the game especially as its likely to be those that cannot afford a permanent broadband connection or cant get one at home for other reasons like parents wont allow access to one. But that is likely to be a temporary situation for most people. And I do think the online element is exciting if it allows a dynamic game far more so than an offline game and this is coming from someone who plays all offline games (well Steam solo games which I class as offline even though they are online). This is the only game I plan to play thats online and I dont really class this as online really because people will be few and far between in this game. Overall I think its the right decision but its a shame they didnt make it earlier.

No its not 'a shame they didn't make the decision earlier' - it's SHAMEFUL.

Time to move on I think, it's been explained, over and over and over again, there is no offline mode, so get over it.
If you don't like it, go elsewhere!!!

Well, at least they recognized the decision to do it and stop wasting valuable resources, rather than blunder through release with problems and patches and even more upset people.

Shok.

Unless trolls like you stop poking a finger into the nerve of these people this discussion won't stop. The Media has more negative headlines to "promote" Elite ONLINE ("The biggest complaint in history now exceeding 10,000 posts, etc.) People may get angry enough to take legal actions, and with a bit of luck Frontier's funds are hit hard enough to stall or end the development of new features.

"With a bit of luck" eh? And you wonder why people find this attitude despicable. There is nothing more low than this gleeful, spiteful wish that you are managing to do harm to the company, and spoil the party for everybody because you didn't get what you want.

I am just saddened by this entire debacle and see no good resolution in sight while both sides dig in and sling fecces at each other like our forefathers did thousands of years ago.

I can see a halfway solution and that is a partial refund because even though people bought and have played the Beta, they still have not received a physical boxed copy of the game. So I don't see why not FD cannot refund 50% of peoples investment. There are a couple of other issues too and that is that some people have bought Stars and Planets that have their name on them. So FD would have to alter the database accordingly.

I know that this does not resolve the issue of there being no off line mode, but unhappy customers who have currently been told that they will get nothing back at all will be a little happier.

Total agreement. How childish and spiteful.

Perhaps you should be worried. Maybe not now but next time. How can you trust a company that cares so little about its customers? I get that you like the game, but thats no reason to be a door mat to the makers. Would you let your girlfriend/boyfriend walk all over you just because you really liked them? You know the type, youve seen them at least in tv shows and made fun of them saying "Id never let anyone treat me like that.". Well........

Not touching this... it would go way too far into psychological analysis. I think you may have some pretty deep seated issues there mate.

From my understanding some people don't want nothing else than a sandbox universe.
Theirs, fully, untouchable. They want to find it the same as they left it.
NPCs and whatever else is in there should be pure decoration.
I can understand that to a certain point.
Transport Tycoon is such an example, imagine someone else interferred with your complex, well thought out system. (even its 2 whole different genres, just to make a point)
They want to be the first to see a star, a system, a station, you name it.
In short, their game.
And they have every right to wish for that, no matter how anyone else i thinking about it.

Is it likely FD will deliver something like that? Who knows? Someday maybe.
Do I think it would be boring as hell? Yes but no one cares.
Could i try to be reasonable and show them, they might miss an opportunity? Yes but it'd be pointless.

Everyone wants, what he wants.
After alot of pages here i learned, that only few care for the other and it's pointless to try to explain something to someone who does'nt want to listen.

Do i like the game? Hell yes!
Do i feel for the dissapointed people? Yes Sir!
Do i understand the decision? Yes.
Do i want to defend FD? Hell no. I think their refund policy is unfair. Advertising to upgrade a preorder (refundable) for 15 bucks to beta access (making everything un-refundable) is beyond my logic.

The right thing to do would have been an anouncement with a parallel refund offer, because of a feature change. (no matter if it was the decision to not implement offline, bountyhunting, mining, trading or whatever) until the moment of the final release. That would have been a fair and friendly thing to do.

Thats like you guys acting because of your offline mode, so just stop it.

So I guess what it comes down to is that we are just renting the game? Isn't that what it means for everyone now?....Technically I mean.

Fictitious :)

The previous game has reached 10,000 players, and has become rather large. Rather than shutting everyone out of the game, we'd like to direct your attention to this server to continue the playing of the 'offline mode'.

:)

Brett did NOT write the above, it's just a little joke.
