My exploration world was rocked by the 'discovery' of a couple of tools that delivered such QOL improvements that I couldn't (now) live without them.
EDDI was the first game changer. It can appear overwhelming at first, but I've spent many, many hours tweaking and tuning to reduce it's verbosity and restrict it's reports to (largely) celestial bodies of interest while I travel around.
Next up was
Elite Observatory Core with the
Bioinsights plugin. These additions simplify xenobiology collection quite dramatically.
All far too involved and way over the top for what is supposed to be a game, but in reality is a way off life.
General approach to exploration (from way back when) - fix up your ship, head out into the black, regret your many flawed design decisions, return to the bubble and fix them. try again
