I know FDEV won't

As a legacy player myself I can't see Fdev giving 2 hoots about consoles legacy . I did post about opening up all the paintjobs that are already on legacy. But then the arx costings change and I don't think what is available is good enough to for those new prices.
Unfortunately Fdev don't want anything to do with consoles they won't even change their advertising to show that legacy isn't an open live game .
I honestly wish it was different .

I know ED on console is a dead parrot, but even in it's current state I believe it's the best space game on Xbox. (I'm biased so I think it's the best Xbox game in any genre).
It can be a great base to build on, all the hard work has been done. They've proved that they can do story narrative (thargoid war) so an introduction of a console only story could engage a lot of players for little resource outlay.

It is the best space game on Xbox and with a little effort it could be a busy console game.

As long as both Microsoft and Sony require Odyssey to run on obsolete hardware because the base game does, there won't be a future for ED on console.

And making Legacy free to play will make FDev more loss on maintaining twice the infrastructure needed. Making it f2p will actually rise the cost because most players of free to play games simply don't buy IAPs.

07 cmdrs, still lots to do in legacy galaxy, currently on the way to colonia in my fc, oh boy was the grind for it worth it, took a while but goal achieved, having fun exploring whilst the carrier jumps ahead, I accept legacy for what it is, still the best by far xbox space sim 😀

Oh definitely I've got a over 700 hrs in NMS and StarField individually and over 7000 in elite. But I have to admit my time playing elite has dropped considerably as I've done most things apart from anti xeno and it's much of a muchness no different to the others apart from the others are newer look better but same gameplay go there drop that off kill that person etc. But there is nothing like Elite.

I'm not aware of any such requirement, at least on the PlayStation side. There are some PS5-only games in existence. Not a whole lot, but they do exist. And not some fringe indie games made by nobodies either, but huge triple-A games, such as Spider-Man 2, the remake of Demon's Souls, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

I believe the PS5 would be perfectly capable of running Odyssey at 4k @ 60 FPS.

Because they are separate games. Elite Dangerous Odyssey is considered an expansion requiring the base game, therefore it's not a separate game.

If EDO was a standalone game not requiring Elite Dangerous as a base game instead, FDev could indeed have ditched PS4 and XBox One.

I don't see a reason why they couldn't sell Odyssey as its own separate game for the consoles.
Because it gave them an easy get out clause ? Ohhh so sorry we can't make it happen on last gen so we stopped everything . Because of the mess of the EDO on its drop they needed all hands on deck for PC.

I've never understood the decision? PC have a minimum spec and EDO was an add on and those who didn't have that spec couldn't play ? So why are consoles so different ?

The minmum specs were unrealistic for proper gameplay because the game was in a VERY unoptimized state and still is.
FDev added bandaids and cut corners to make it somewhat feasible for the systems at hand, but EDO overall suffered in quality because of it.

Both the PS4 and XBox One are 2013-era hardware. To play ED Odyssey without any graphical glitches and overstrain on the GPU (due to constant texture cache unloading and transfer), you need at least 8 GB VRAM (which even the minimum fails to acknowledge). Neither the PS4 nor the XBox One have that (they have shared memory, both the PS4 and the XBox one have 8 GB TOTAL memory shared between CPU and GPU). Contrary to a PC however, a console cannot be upgraded.

Also, planetary procgen suffers from thread starvation (which they added to guarantee a minimum FPS of 30, but even that tends to fail due to AI navmesh calculation spam) which means you will have a hard time finding rare materials or might bug out on ground mission critical items if your CPU is not up to snuff.

These various issues add up and make it less and less feasible to port EDO to consoles. To completely fix these issues, it would be more feasible to rewrite the entire game than to try and fix this messy state.

My point was, if Fdev said EDO is on next gen only there wouldn't be a huge outcry with many including my self upgrading to Next gen( as many PC players had to do ) to play . But ( this is my opinion of Fdev ) Fdev knew last gen wouldn't work as we all did, but used that as an easy excuse to say "ahhh so sorry we tried but we couldn't get it to work " . And the effort wasn't put into next gen consoles ?

They would have to release EDO as a separate game instead of a DLC (thereby losing sales for the base game and even obsoleting it) because a DLC for a game that was released for last gen may not require next gen and must be compatible with last gen.

It is not an excuse. Neither Sony nor Microsoft would have allowed the release of a PS 5 / XB S/X only DLC for a PS4 / XB1 game.

It's all very messy, and it's evident that a lot of folks were emotionally invested in the game and consequently were distressed when the news broke of the cessation of development. Some expressed this more colourfully than others 😁,
I believe that the true situation regarding the decision for not continuing on next gen console will never be public knowledge, and I don't think fdev ever explained the reason why it just stopped development.
As for future prospects on a port for next gen, I think the financial conditions fdev find themselves in will dictate that.
I would love for the port to happen, but I really think it will never be a thing.
I need to remember that I loved elite in all it's previous incarnations and I bought them as static, never to be improved, games. Just like ED on console now.
