Your Pets

Recently got two cats. I was on the fence because of a history of allergies, but my partner insisted there is a special food that contains a protein which reduces the allergens in cat dander, so I caved.

We initially went in for one (at a rescue). The cat we liked had two kittens (well...adult kittens I guess, I feel weird saying "children"), a boy and a girl. We never saw the girl but the boy would come out and hang with us while we were visiting his mum. The boy was super chill and apathetic which I really liked, whereas the mum was more cuddly and affectionate which my partner liked. When we visited the second time, the sister had been adopted, so it was just mum and son left, so we adopted both. They're black-and-white short hairs, so we called mum "Magpie" and son "Puffin".

As it turns out, Magpie is far more chill and relaxed, happy to lounge around and only bothers us for the odd scratch behind the ears. Puffin is far needier than he let on. I often stay up late because I work shifts, and when I do, boy howdy is he a pain in the ass. Following me around, jumping on my laptop, meowing constantly as if he's starving. I went to the loo to take care of business and locked him out and he spent the entire five minutes I was in there scratching the door and meowing to be let in. He scammed us.

They're cute cats though. So far my allergies have been better than I expected, but worse than I hoped.

Well i guess were getting a cat soon.
There is this cat thats chilling around our house for a like a week and a half now, and is, for lack of a better term, trying to move in 😄.
At first he just showed up for like half an hour and left, so usual cat stuff. But he just spend more time here with each passing day, so were at a point now where he hasnt left for 3 days.
This crook already wheeled my mom into feeding him and putting a cardboard box with a blanket out for him.
Needlessly to say the dog is still unsure about the whole situation 😂

Well i guess were not getting a cat soon.
We got him to the vet to let the doc look at some scratches and bruises he has and see if he is micro chipped, and sure enough he was.
So we managed to find the owners who have already been looking for him for 9 fricking months, and live like 40km away. Since there was some construction going on when he disappeared the theory is that he got locked in in the back of a truck or electritians van when the workers wrapped up and left. Being taken a few cities away as an involuntary stow away.
Needless to say the owners were more than happy to have him back since they already gave up hope of finding him.
Kinda bitter sweet to see him go, really took a liking to the lil guy since he was like the sweetest and most friendly cat ever, he even started to make peace with our dogs.

There is a soundbite in the game that sounds like my dad yelling “Napoleon” from far away and every time it plays my dog will bark and fly off my bed because he thinks he’s getting fed. 🤣

Always amazed by cats on leash. I tried to teach mine when she was a kitten, but she always refused to move. 😅
Haha yes, cats can be really stubborn. Not all cats can be trained to walk on a leash, I was lucky with him, it was relatively easy. Some also need more time or need another harness and with others like I said it's never possible even if you start training in a very young age.
Similar thing with a pet cone, they can move with it and they can reach their food and water with it but they hate the cone, so they do this show:ROFLMAO:

Question for cat owners: Are they usually super bad at learning routines? As I've mentioned before, I work shifts so sometimes I'll be getting out of bed at 2.30 in the morning and sometimes I'll be coming home at that time, so I can understand the cats not wrapping their head around my coming-and-going routine, but despite literally never being fed treats first thing in the morning, whenever I get out of bed, whether that's at 2.30am or 1pm, they beg me for treats. Like, with sheer desperation. One of them nearly clawed up my leg because I went into the pantry to get bread for toast.

It's kind of annoying. They woke up my son up yesterday morning with their caterwalling when my partner got up. Again, begging for treats, despite never once getting a morning treat since we got them.

It's mostly the male cat. He's hella dumb. The female is a bit more clued-in. For example, when I get home from work on a day shift I always get myself sorted out (getting changed, having a drink) before I pay them any attention. The female has learned that if she just sits and waits until I'm done she'll get a belly rub. The male follows me around like a bad smell meowing at me. He's also prone to walking in front of my feet and getting (accidentally, obviously) kicked, and unlike the female he still hasn't learned not to jump on the kitchen counters despite being tossed off every time he's up there or being sprayed with a water bottle. I've heard that male cats are generally not as smart, but man, this one's ridiculous.

Part of it could be a personality thing, he just might be food motivated. Another part of it is behavioral. Does he associate you with food and treats? Is he used to people getting up/ going to the pantry and then getting his breakfast/dinner/treats?

How are they fed btw? Do they have a gravity feeder? Or are they fed portioned meals by hand? It’s possible he associates anyone coming home/ waking up as a sign food is coming. He might not be aware of your work schedule, but he might associate you coming home/ waking up as a sign he is about to get food.

The only time I feed them is when I give them some treats before bed, to distract them so they don't follow me into the hall. My two year old sleeps with his door open and for whatever reason is super possessive of his space and doesn't like the cats in his room, so they're kept in the living/dining/kitchen during the night. My partner feeds them breakfast when she gets up (and dinner later in the day). They get portions by hand.

Their dry and wet food is kept on top of the fridge, and their treats are in the pantry. That's how I know they (for some reason) think they're getting treats; they go straight for the pantry and start shouting at me.

Try just moving the treats to a more neutral place for now and see how that goes? Pets are interesting because sometimes there is no health thing they are just like that. Sometimes puppies will drink a ton of water, it might seem like a medical issue right? Not all the time. Sometimes it’s just a behavioral thing and they like drinking a ton of water.

So try moving the treats somewhere else, or maybe try a toy that requires them to work for the treat? Like a puzzle box.

A monitor! What species?
Pilbara rock monitor, my favorite animal and an absolute dream species for me.

I already got one a year ago, but he unfortunately passed away pretty soon after i got him. Apperently there was something wrong with its clutch since most of its clutchmates also didnt make it unfortunately.
I guess thats the risk with getting a very young animal, was still super heartbreaking tho
