The Zoolympic Games

Okay, new zoo up and running and making money ( so far ) and has the gharial riverview building set up, minus plants and transport system ( will add those next play session after the money has risen some more) .. I made some adjustments to the inside pathing so that I could add a few food and drink stands with nearby tables to fill those needs in that area of the zoo. Once I'm happy that that area is working almost autonomously then I can start planning the new area.

We can keep 'desert-inspired visitor centre' in the mix as that had a few votes, any other suggestions pop them here! I'll get another poll up in about a week's time
  • Based on a particular island(s) such as Japan, Iceland, Borneo or Hawaii
  • Food chain educational featuring only two species enclosures such as wolves and red deer OR dingo and kangaroo.
  • Mountain replica (like Expedition Everest in Disney Animal Kingdom) that could feature as many animals as you want but has to be from one region of the world such as Snow leopard, Takin etc...
  • Taxonomic theme which features enclosures of only one general type of animal such as foxes, sheep, donkeys, monitors, or wolves (Canis)
  • Immersive habitat that is realistic for a irl zoo but tries to resemble as though the guests are on safari and the animals are in the wild.
Next round....lets go..!......
@Marvinb That was a great comment haha. " 'Zoo Entrance' would be a fun tribute to the meme" - this made me laugh lots but it was also followed with a sense of oh no not another entrance :ROFLMAO: though if we went the extra mile to make an entrance theme fun i'd be up for it. Like maybe lean into the meme, the entrance of all entrances. Or a themed entrance might be better! So many themes we could choose from and do a further polll for.
Simple habitats is always a good idea too! I'm up for those.
Love the idea about the paradoxical rounds. I love this idea so much that I think we should make it a regular round that comes up every so often just to keep things weird and wonderful. Love your two ideas for the different combinations, I can't even think of one off the top of my head but lets please revisit this, that would be fun :)

Other ideas throwing into the mix...
  • Both indoor and outside viewing of an ape house (1 species only: gorilla, orangutan, bonobo, chimpanzee or gibbon)
  • Polar research centre (featuring only 1 research animal such as king penguin, polar bear, arctic wolf, arctic fox, wolverine, dall sheep or reindeer) a building and connecting habitat that showcases 1 snowy region species, the kind of building you'd find out in the field/wild set up for conservation purposes. Preferrably showcased in snowy weather.
  • Equine paddock with stables (either zebra or przewalski's horse)
  • Zen garden (walk through animals only)
  • Rocky coast inspired habitat
  • Marshland inspired habitat
  • Meerkat habitat
  • Train station (think this was villanelles idea!)
  • Gift shop
  • Lakeside cafe
I like all of your ideas! Especially the research center, rocky coast and Gift shop.

Now that's a challenge, basically building the Kilimanjaro Safari ride from the animal kingdom park.
Dang .. it's like they were reading my thoughts rofl.
Grumeti Safari was my idea

really creative ideas @synthetase I especially like your mountain expedition idea, taxonomic groups and immersive safari habitat :)
Is It Fine If My African Herd Is For Rainforest Animals Of Africa? Like Bongo, Okapi, Pygmy Hippo, RR Hog And Lowland Gorilla
I think it sounds like a fair alternative to do jungle hoofstock from africa and would be lovely to see this variation, Edit: @Villanelle what are the rules for non "hoofstock" animals being included in the herd habitat, such as gorillas for jungle or ostrich for savannah?
Dang .. it's like they were reading my thoughts rofl.
Grumeti Safari was my idea
its a great idea! I'm up for a safari challenge!

which african herd animals come with the africa pack? I don't actually have this pack so will be using african "hoofstock" from other packs! I'm wondering what I'm missing out on! (probably lots of nice scenery too!)

I want to say just the rhino... I think good pack for African herd animals would be: Arid (for a desert theme), Wetlands (Lechwe is cute), Grasslands (wildebeest)...

If were talking "herd" animals, its only the white rhino.
Personally i think what is and isnt refered to as a herd is kinda arbitrary, so i interpret this as just animals living in social groups.
So imo having something like a mixed exhibit for mandrills and river hogs is perfectly fine, even though neither of these are refered to as herds when in groups

Awesome thank you for clearing that up 🙂 I defs took the word herd a bit too literally! that actually opens up a lot more possibilties :)

Although the riverboat option may be out of the window as at least one of the animals can swim so can't use water as a barrier to allow an open water course through the enclosure.

And I totally missed the herd specific part outside of antelopes and gazelles etc which I would count as herding.
Although .. a large group of animals, especially hoofed mammals, that live together or are kept together as livestock. So I was thinking buffalo etc .. some of the ones in the major enrichment group for the African animals in the game .. But also threw in warthog and ostrich as well rofl.
And this wiki page ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd ) says this A herd is a social group of certain animals of the same species, either wild or domestic.

Still might want to wait for Villanelles feedback before starting to build 😅
That's a good idea .. I did my first stage but the animals I have in there may not have been what was in mind .. so .. may have to swap them out. But, browsing around checking certain animals and the term seems to be very loosely applied to several animals.
Such as National Geographic counting ostriches as being in a small herd.
Ostriches live in small herds that typically contain less than a dozen birds.

Yeah its what i said before, there is no real rhyme or reason to what is called a herd.
A group of antelope is called a herd while a group of sheep are a flock. A group of chicken is called a flock while a group of ostriches is a herd funnily enough.
For rhinos its a crash, for pigs a drift, for apes a troop and so on

In between building time, could I please collect your thoughts / wishes / heart's desires for the topic for the next round - round 3? We can keep 'desert-inspired visitor centre' in the mix as that had a few votes, any other suggestions pop them here! I'll get another poll up in about a week's time
Here are some ideas:
  • A dome building that contains a minimum of two habitats (or at least serves as the shelter/interior portion of the habitat).
  • A habitat located in a cave.
  • A habitat on a slope. It’d be good for mountain-dwelling animals like ibexes or takins, but any animal is fine.
  • An habitat for a desert animal built in a zoo in a tundra biome OR a tundra animal in a desert zoo. You’d have to make it look like the zoo pulled out all the stops to accommodate for the animal.
  • Animal Palace - I got this idea from a cartoon that I used to watch as a kid called “Hero 108.” It’s about humans going to the kings and queens of certain animals (i.e. the Elephant Ling, the Chameleon Queen, the Eagle King) to ask to join their side in a war against a trickster warlord. Each animal monarch had their own castle, and I was thinking, “What would a castle made for a specific animal look like?”
  • Fantastical Setting - Basically, you pick a genre of fiction (fantasy, horror, sci-fi, etc.) and make a habitat based on that.
  • Cartoony - Make it look as cartoonish and tacky as possible.

realises that many of the suggestions so far can be treated as training tools for the main zoos rofl
