Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I really only know about it for being a "spreadsheet simulator", but i presume that's when you really get into it big time and the org stuff. I presume just playing casually you don't need that sort of thing.

yeah, you can make it that if you want to. sorta like in elite, if all you wanted to do was track and strategize bgs takeovers of systems. you'd be in spreadsheets tracking progress and what to do. or you can just fly around and do stuff.

two weeks in and have been solo the whole time. there is so much that not sure even what i want to do.

There are other things to do, I mean this sort of article got me reading about EVE and put it on my list of possible games before I got ED;

But the sheer dedication and time required to actually do stuff that doesn't involve killing and spread sheeting in EVE pushed me towards ED, and here I still am over 8 years later!

I have been reading recently that the devs for EVE Online are looking at adding an FPS component to the game, although definitely not in the same way as FDEV did it. The FPS part will apparently be a completely separate game that ties in with and affects the overall game systems, so the two are tied together but can be played as two games. Should be interesting to see what they come up with.

Given they've done that once before (Dust 514) it def will be ;)

and thats why the gray market is dead
Not sure. Unless you mean a trend to larger discounts from nominals. That could be. But looking at the reddit SC trades sub this year and back in time with the waybackmachine there does not seem to have been a substantial drop in overall number of confirmed trades. Decent number of ironclad related trades in this first few days of June so far for example.

People may be getting better discounts now (although checking this would require more digging) but trades still seem to be made in similar numbers to the last 3-4 years.

What's funny for me is, while watching the development of SC, i've gone through many different games, playing intensively or casually, stopping playing, perhaps returning, finding new games, and some SC backers still wax lyrical about how they do 10 bunker missions a day and are loving it, and they do it over and over again, all while dealing with the bugs/crashes/etc, and claiming its the best thing since sliced bread.
I don't fault people for paying a particular game, there's always that unique game mechanics that is going to appeal to someone. Its just a little obvious with Star Citizen they're loading in as many features as they can to draw in all the groups without having any plans to make it all coherent. To put it another way, they're building a marketting campaign, showcasing features and never finishing them.

Ultimately though I have to put most of the blame on the audience. Ever since the "take all the time you need" movement came around there's been less incentive/accountability for devs to finish their projects. I really think Early Access was create to take advantage of the mentality. On the other hand you have the majority of the gaming population who sees the Early Access projects and wants the finishd product NOW!

I'm tired of all this and been of half a mind to try making my own game several times, just waiting to retire so I'll have the time to. Maybe I should start a kickstarter to fund my passion project and save PC gaming.

heh. i did just buy a year of omega for eve because it just went on sale. only been playing a couple weeks now, but really like so many of the mechanics.

and can definitely tell now that a lot of people that talk about eve have never played eve.
I gave up understanding on all the plexshmex. How much the whole thing would cost in the end was a total mystery to me.

Good Salary (if experienced) . Good packages (healt, way of life) . Remote is stil supported

Cons
Before moving to CIG, I was in a another country, To move in my new City : - I lost my rental deposit (2 months) - I paid the flying ticket, - I paid the costs for a new apartment. CIG did not cover any of the costs I paid. It's a greedy company

Pros

Workers are extremely skilled and proficient

Cons
Executives and CEO have no sense of priorities or treatment of workers. Common to not receive raises, be lied to about pay transfer when moving to another department, and have to pay out-of-pocket when parking. Very tolerant to abuse and harassment.

Advice to Management
Improve sense of priorities. Get the game done, playable, and out. THEN add updates and cool new functions.

Sorry, you only get to do that if you had a successful game decades ago so you can appeal to the nostalgia in people who played those games years ago. After you start, you then discover your idea of how to make software is woefully out of date, but people keep throwing money at you, so you have to keep going, even though the project is at best going to release and be a damp squib or at worst, a complete failure.

No, no, no, you don't understand game development.

Those games were built on dated ideas and in many cases the devs were stuck in which ever decade they're from. I'm a clean slate, no previous experience that's why my game will be built from the ground up to SAVE the gaming world. Disregard all practices that failed the industry, I'm going to reinvent everything. I mean binary, shminary, I'm talking not even quantum archetecture I'm talking sub-quantum device, it'll be great, it'll be so future proof science will have to catch up with my ideas. WHEN my idea fails, blame the component manufacturers for not building technology that can run my game.

I'm only asking $1 million (1970 adjusted for inflation) for this passion project.
Every $ pledged is worth 7 times compared to other studios today.

Doesn't have alien space babes, so no sell.

Hello.

I think most games are like that now a Days, BG3,
Hello friend.

How did your adventures go? Did you breach concierge tier in the end?

When you left us you were expecting a SQ42 release in 2020. How time flies ;)
LOL, well that aged poorly!

I did, I have the 890, 600i and a couple other ships there now. In buy back I have most ships except JAV and Kracken. I’m good on that side of the house. I really hope my kids enjoy SC with the ships I bought :)

I’m super excited for SC, as it’s still my go to game.

As for Elite, It’s great coming back after so long, check out the new stuff, and mess around with it. I’ve read that they are going to start working on ED more, I hope so, as it has much it can improve upon.

With SC going into Master Modes combat, the flight model is not significantly better than ED, I liked the older model better… Now both games are airplanes in space!

So much more to compare, but, don’t want this post to sound like a rant :)

ED debate will generally get squished in this thread. It's meant for SC debate alone really. (And clears the tribalism out the way ;))

But happy to hear your throughts on SC after all this time.

And if you've got any predictions for what 2024 / 2025 will bring definitely sling those in. We have annual awards ;)

Hot Gossip:

Ok so our friend has been playing through an 'SQ42 demo' branch that appeared :)

Here are their thoughts:
  • The current 'demo' build contains the whole game.
  • It is playable, but barely. It doesn't crash like previous builds but is more bugged than the average alpha.
  • It's heavy on cutscenes, especially in the first levels. Some of them are up to 15 minutes long with little gameplay before the next one.
  • Internal gameplay showcases have been very empty. This partial playthrough aligned with that: Vast walking simulator areas etc.
  • Players who enjoy flying in SC will probably enjoy it more in SQ42, with 'real' missions and linked objectives.
  • The environments are much better in SQ42 than SC as they are crafted for the linear experience.
  • You think there's a lot of known actors? Think again, there's even more than that. Almost every character was a familiar actor.
  • The first level ends on an enormous opening credits scene. Including all the big name actors. And Sandi.
  • There are a lot of missing voice lines and audio. Mocap work is apparently ongoing.
  • Usually gameplay is done first, but just like the SC pipeline, the art here is mostly done while gameplay elements sometimes feel added afterwards. Many were still placeholder and whitebox with the surrounding art being complete.
  • The story is pretty generic and the game itself is nothing innovative. It feels like playing a dated game with a fresh coat of paint. But some fans will love that since It's the 'same'.
  • The AI in combat is a little bit better than SC and the social locations like the Idris feels more alive than SC, but it's still the same AI. They still stand on chairs, they bug out etc. It's a long way from other games like Cyberpunk for instance.
  • They added collectibles to find in the game like trading cards, comics etc. It's standard in most games but it's missing from SC so it was nice to find that in there, rewarding exploration.
  • The spreading fire tech is decent and works well with the extinguisher, but it was also annoying. In a level surrounded by water fire spread over the objective and main path and they couldn't proceed. Tractor beaming burning stuff into the water doesn't extinguish it. Hopefully it will all be fixed.
  • You can thoroughly wash your hands in the bathroom. It's not gameplay, it's just a useless animation. It's the kind of stuff that gets cut in any other game, especially a delayed one like this.
  • The game lacks tutorials and practise with key features. Like trying to use the inventory / collect ammo in the middle of your first firefight, while tackling enemies who can one-shot you.
  • They stopped playing because they were annoyed by the game-breaking bugs, and also because they got bored. But they get bored in SC too in fairness.
  • At an educated guess it's about a 30 hour campaign. That's being generous in case some of the levels they haven't played are particularly long.
  • One level that was in whitebox 4 years ago is still not finished. Gameplay elements missing, buggy, with placeholder voice lines etc.
  • Framerate is poor on a decent machine. A 4090 would likely still struggle with it. Worse than some pre-alpha console builds by other studios that they've played.
  • The save system is in a poor state. Loading and checkpoints break or crash the game.
  • The majority of the objectives they experienced were bugged, requiring a relaunch or skipping via debug menu. Scripted events failing etc.
