DLC18 discussion and predictions

Ok new pack making idea, a pack of animals you have seen in zoos and a pack of animals you haven’t
Wanted to do something slightly more creative with this, so, for the pack of species I've seen in zoos, I decided to make mine full of species I've seen that are very rare globally, all with less than 5 holdings in total to my knowledge. Given here in Australia basically all of our exotic zoo animals are common everywhere else, it ends up just being full of native species:
  1. Numbat
  2. Western Quoll/Chuditch
  3. Northern Bettong
  4. Rufous Hare-wallaby/Mala
  5. Antilopine Wallaroo
  6. Malleefowl
  7. Superb Lyrebird
  8. Thorny Devil [E]
Then, for species I haven't seen, I did the opposite - species that appear to be common globally (or at least in certain parts of the world, like the ABB in NA), but I haven't seen, and can't see because no zoos keep them here. Basically, animals that would be useful to everyone but me:
  1. Eurasian Otter
  2. American Black Bear
  3. Reeves' Muntjac
  4. Greater Rhea
  5. Grey-crowned Crane
  6. Great White Pelican
  7. Nile Crocodile
  8. Leopard Gecko [E]

I would honestly be pretty happy with either packs, obviously being from NA the bottom one is more useful. Still I actually like the Australian section! If I remember the Bronx Zoo had malleefowl, or some bird close to it.

Thanks! I believe you’re thinking of the maleo, another wonderful megapode that Bronx Zoo is known for breeding. According to Zootierliste the Bronx actually did have malleefowl once, but that was back in the 1920s!

I was curious to see what the next animals could be for the upcoming dlc, and instead of the meta wishlist I was curious to see what ZooTierlist had ranked as the most common species. Animals we don’t have in game will be bolded, and this is taken from the top 30. (Also for certain domestic breeds I’m just gonna include any representation, likewise any animal that fits “close enough”)

  1. 1

    507
    30
    European Eagle Owl
    502
So being generous we got 15/30. If we decide to remove the flying birds, we got 15/25. So we actually have over half of the most common species in captivity, at least as far as this list is concerned. Obviously this wouldn’t be close to the doctrine of the meta wishlist, but I think that’s ok.

I will say. I do wonder if we could see budgies/ lorikeets in the WTE. Obviously they are common enough to be included. Of course, we probably never will get them, for whatever reasoning Frontier has. Does make me wonder though, JWE1 got the pteranodons at the end, maybe PZ will get something like that too?

This list has some pros and cons mainly its sample size outside of europe is very limited in terms of number of zoos and accuracy though it has gotten alot better in recent years.

But one thing that not many people are talking about that definitely skews results is that zoo tierliste represents breeds, subspecies and non specific all on separate lists so groups of animals such as domestics which have alot of breeds and subspecies are under represented whilst animals with none have their true numbers but end up being overrepresented in their position on the list.

To illustrate my point if say for example we look at all ostrich subspecies under one total it adds ups to 615 raising its position 8 places and places it above the mandarin duck

Looking at this list always makes me mad at barnyard since why did they not pick the most popular goat and second most popular animal and why was a rabbit not in the pack. I also disagree to you bolding the dwarf goat because yes we have the alpine goat but since both are specific but different breeds of goat they are not the same the donkey and chicken are fine since the ones on the list represent a generic individual which we do have.

The metawishlist always has and always will be skewed to what the forums feels is a safe choice which means no birds that arent completely grounded, anything living predominately in the water, and no habitat reptiles that arent a crocodilian or a montior. Its usefulness as a statistical representation of what people want only goes so far and is only really good at predicting the top mammals

Not really. Since it's inception back in 2021, there have been many variants of the wishlist. At 1st, it was kinda whatever you wanted, and only has catered more to how the current mechanics allow when the community realized that some choices were never gonna make it, which inspired new wishlists, like the Exhibit Meta-Wishlist and the Aquatic Meta-Wishlist.
Eventually, the rest of the wishlists kinda got merged under the Exhibit Meta-Wishlist, which ended up being kinda forgotten itself by the majority of members.

But honestly, mammals have always been more popular and always will be. It's always predominantly featured mammals over habitat birds (like waterfowl) and habitat reptiles (like crocodiles and tortoises).

But, that's not to say that the devs only looked at the wishlist here, which is a common misconception; while they do value the use of the many wishlists on the forums, Frontier also checks out feedback on other platforms. I mean, why wouldn't they? There are customers there, so it'd be a bad move to ignore those players as well

Mammals for sure will always rank number 1 in terms of wants but the impact of not knowing whether a certain lizards or something like a puffin would even be considered for the list has undoubtedly influenced some of the choices say someone had the choice of putting the ocelot or atlantic puffin on their list they are likely going to pick ocelot because that option is more likely to remain on the list or have a better chance of making it into the game in general. The existence of the exhibit meta wishlist sort of supports this idea since all the animals that fall into the gaps between the 2 like turtles and lizards are just likley not going to appear on either list because people are hesitant about it fitting the lists criteria.

Its a fine look at what the forums want and can be used to make reasonable predications and decsions but the forums does not represent everyone and the forums in general are more reserved about game changing animal picks. Ill admit my wording in the original reply was a bit exaggerated sure waterfowl and other reptiles will make the list but likely not at the numbers the community actually wants them.

All this chatter about specific animals just got me thinking. Let's forget full pack wishlists for a second.

What's your #1 highest priority animal for a presumably final pack, and what theme would you want it slotted into? Like, let's say Frontier came to you and said "Look, we really need some help! Give us a single species and a theme. As an added option you can pick whether you want it to be an animal or scenery set! We'll build it based on that information."

What would you pick?

I'd go Matschie's Tree Kangaroo and Treetops.

Non biased comment, but I'd go with:

Gray fox and Forests theme
The theme would be kinda vague and feature a lot of faux tree/canopy pieces and give us animals associated with forests, like gray foxes

Hands down still the white faced whistling duck, its pros greatly outweigh any cons. I have said them so many times there is no point in repeating. But if there is one pro I will still sing to the heavens: it could have a massive inter species enrichment, all while being one of the only birds to fit in the “tropical house” niche.

As for potential packs: treetops, rainforest, Americas, Zookeeper, bird, really it can fit anything.

The only animal that seems to be consistent with my zoo projects would be a flamingo, so american flamingo + americas animal pack.
I told you. You can’t hide what’s inside! I bet the American Flamingo speaks to you like the green goblin mask.
