DLC18 discussion and predictions

Im sticking with the gun that 3 large spotted cat was good, 4 was acceptable, 5 was defenetly to much.

In a game with the jaguar, the snow and the cloud leopard we dont need standard leopard 1 and defenetly not a second one, especally not when we literally do not have a single one of many other popular groups like ducks, pheasents, rabbits and just in even more like new world monkeys.

Amur leopard was okay, but even then i wasnt a fan at the time but the african is pointless to a point that even surpasses the himalayan brownbear so really nothings lost here besides peoples urge to complete a set
I agree that adding a second subspecies of leopard was completely unnecessary. This is probably also true for the second subspecies of tiger for example. Still, the Jaguar, the Clouded Leopard, and the Snow Leopard are different animals, and all are iconic for their regions and all are easily distinguishable from Amur Leopards.

Preferably monkeys, birds, and rabbits could be added to the game instead of replacing cats unless the cats are just redundant subspecies. But you know, maybe I just love cats...

About antelopes, as much as I love them, I think we are really spoiled with the amount of antelopes in Planet Zoo. I wouldn't cry if 3 or 4 get replaced with monkeys or birds (or one extra deer, or at least one lagomorph).

But I guess similar opinions were said hundreds of times on the forum, no?

Its just a simple fact that cats and antelopes are the 2 most abundant group, so if you want to trim the fat you start there.
Of the 8 species i cut, half of them were antelopes and cat, both 2 each and the 2 extra animals also in consideration were also an antelope and a cat.
Its not even a bias, both groups together make up ~6% of the games roster size each, which is more then birds mind you.

Its not even bias its just the most logical approach, afterall why cut something unique when you got 2 blatantly overrepresented groups right there that dont even make it hard to catch their weakest links.
Sure most likly a leopard does belong in a zoo game, but so do monkeys, birds and sufficent representation for all continents and if the leopard comes at the cost of the latter i wouldnt even hesitate to trade them away

It had 1 if we consider the baird tapir has a South American. But yes overall the base roster was Asia-Africa-NA centered. With basically zero unic species of SA, Oceania and Europe... Base roster was very weak. Except if you wanted to do African safari zoo. The DLC helped the representation of all the continents as they made NA, Oceania and Europe pretty nice but since the SA pack it ignored pretty much the richest continent in biodiversity;.. which didn't help.
the fact that you call the base game NA centred when it has 4 animals out of the 50 just shows you how appalling the base game was with its diversity. In total 8 animals had ranges that left africa or asia and only 5 were not in those continents at all one of which is an island endemic tortoise.

Oh well, I agree with you. Of course there aren't enough birds and monkeys in the game. Absolutely.

Would I hypothetically get rid of some cats and antelopes in favour of monkeys and birds? Sure. But getting rid of two leopards seems weird to me. Why not cut the number of subspecies instead? So, for example keep the Amur leopard and Amur tiger, get rid of African and Bengal subspecies.

As for antelopes you choose some of the latest and most beautifully made models. I would rather say goodbye to the black wildebeest and springbok than to Addax and Dama gazelle. 😌

With Saiga idk, they're adorable but probably unnecessary oddballs. IDK.

To sum it up, I agree with you one general idea, just not on the particular species. Anyway, it's all hypothetical, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah and the hypothetical question was to show that frontier would have wanted that even with the current basegame and most of the animal choices post launch intact that they could have easily done south america justice.

Ofcourse on a general cut list id be cutting bengal tiger, hbb, thompson gazelle and black wildebeest long before, but that wasnt the hypothetical here and is in parts also plain unfair as 2 of the 4 are most likly last minute bonus animals, an excuse the second leopard doesnt have, and the thompson isnt bad just stuck with an ugly model.

Imo model quality should never be the deciding factor is something was a good addition or not, not looking like ass is the requirement by now, not the exception

Fair enough. I guess I didn't understand the assignment 😌
