The Buckyball Racing Club presents: POP GUN:BUCKYBALL, race 3 of the Triple 8 Championship

Well CMDRs, what a difference 24 hours makes. I’m almost lost for words with your submissions today pilots.

Almost. Don’t get too excited. Here come a lot of words.

There’s movement at the top of the Unlimited successful missions board that’s bordering on seismic, and the Poseidon that’s caused them is somewhat predictably CMDR Shaye Blackwood.

Son, you must carry around your own secret souped up Alcubierre drive or something because that was frankly astonishing. Either that or your hydrogen fuel comes from some secret lab somewhere out in Fullerene C60. You’re gonna make a few jaws drop among the gathered throng here in the hangar tonight when they see that time on the board. You got beat up a little at Misty Pool and Matarov, but overall, wow, great job, and in the Cobra too! Fantastic.

CMDR Raiko, I saw your Unlimited run before Blackwood’s and I was about to say similar girly-gushy things to you too if he hadn’t just casually come along behind you and bent physics. You had a great run and really raised the bar for Turner or Sulu to try and get over, but today just wasn’t your day. I like the uprated landing gear you found under a dusty cover in the back of the hangar too. Makes those landings just a little bit softer, which is a good thing given how hard you came down on 2E. We can get that pad fixed on Penny Benjamin too, don’t worry. Amazing work pilot, just amazing.
Also, welcome to the Regulation board. Your solid run puts you right in the thick of the action. We both know you can go quicker though. I believe in you.

Next we have.. CMDR Leeya Geddy. Nice run, but only just. I saw zero metres per second at the container for the shortest amount of time my old eyes could pick up. Almost had to disappoint you there pilot, but you’re on the board. Well done.

Kevin The Stabber, it seems like you’ve put down the sharp implements and concentrated on your attack runs today CMDR. Nice clean flight suit too. A great mission today sees you improve your time on the Regulation board right up to the top spot. Excellent work.

Breathing right down your neck is our very own Papa bear, CMDR Bruski. Or at least he would have been had he engaged silent running at the container! I had a visit by a security detachment from the Lucent Embrace earlier, wondering why (more than) one of our ships was showing an interest in their cargo!
I told them that I did not know, but rest assured I’d review what my pilots had been getting up to and get to the bottom of it. They left with some Lavian Brandy from my own personal stash which I DO want replacing.
Turn your damn silent running on next time CMDR!

CMDR Myxlplyx73. Great to see you back in the fray again after your first attempt went a bit sideways earlier this week.
Ok first, you hit launch, stayed on the pad, chose your destination, then left the pad. The timer starts as soon as you hit launch for these missions kid, but me being the kindly, benevolent guy I am I’ll…

Stop that sniggering Turner.

As I was saying, me being generous and all that, I’ll accept the start time you submitted given you’re a greenhorn, kid, but don’t let it happen again.
You hit all the markers at the carrier construction yard, good.
The Lucent Embrace though, almost. Same as Bruski, who seems to be a little teary eyed right now, you did not engage silent running at the container. No wonder those guys that came to see me earlier were upset. For that I’m afraid it’s mission failure.
At Misty Pool, the first satellite you scanned was the correct one, no need to do the others, otherwise good.
Matarov, great. So other than that silent running and the launch, good job. Time for a few more runs yet kid. I know you can do it.

CMDR Sulu you ripped that little Sidewinder round there like it was on fire. Which to be fair, it was at one point. That great hustle sees you improve your time on the Unlimited board.

What a day, aviators. What a day.

Dismissed.

I think I need to request permission to leave the mission now, for my own sanity!

I tried 9 runs today. I died twice, abandoned 4 runs after various mishaps/near explosions/interdictions, and finished 3 runs. My final run would have been the quickest by about 10-15 seconds but I entered the Fleet Carrier space for some reason directly below it! The most awkward approach and unsighted to the pad. I finished 2 seconds slower. In fact all my three runs today were within 5 seconds of each other! I think I've hit my limit (though I haven't which is why it's so frustrating, but then that's Buckyball!)

Huge thanks to Caelum for creating and organising this madness. I thought it looked all a bit confusing at first but after the first run I realised how much fun it was going to be. One of my favourites. Well done everyone who took part and good luck those on the final stretch.

Regulation run incoming.

Speaking of sanity and hitting limits, yesterday I decided (after speaking with Sulu ... tip: never decide anything after speaking with Sulu) to switch to the Imperial Eagle as I realised that it was about 100m/s faster than my Eagle, a ship I reckoned I'd hit my limit with and so consequently had nothing to lose by trying something new. Well, it turns out the Imperial Eagle is a flippin' deathtrap and I ended losing lots and LOTS of them! Sure it's fast, it just isn't much interested in slowing back down again or staying in one piece if (WHEN) it hits anything. Anyway, after Shaye in our Discord further dissed the chances of the iEagle doing well but said he'd love to be proved wrong I was left with no choice but to keep pushing this glass suicide missile to its limits and I'm now pleased to say ...

RUN SUBMITTED

Now, don't get over excited ... it's really not very much faster than my previous best Eagle run but ... it is faster, and it means (even if I stay in the top 5) that the Eagle lives on to fight another day! (and frankly, if my iEagle is consequently banned for the rest of the season I will lose no sleep over that fact).

What a fantastic race this has been, thanks a million to @Caelum Incola for organising and running our 100th race in such style, and a massive o7 to everyone who's taken part and to the final winners whoever you turn out to be ... you've all truly proved yourselves to be top pop guns!

Good evening aviators, here we go with today’s debrief.

Hey, where is everyone? Just the four of us then.

Well, CMDR FearlessF21 ok, let’s see how you did.
I’m not sure how your claimed time for running without life support could be longer than your actual run duration… but no matter, you failed to scan the correct container at Lucent Embrace so your submission is disqualified anyway, sorry. Check the brief again. You also failed to scan the satellite at Misty Pool, which again means disqualification. Damn son, are you just trying to pull my chain here? Additionally you entered a minute less on your submission form than your actual time, which I’m sure was just finger trouble, but anyway, there’s still time for another go. Must try harder CMDR.

CMDR Ozric, you put in a great Regulation run today. I really appreciate the effort pilot. You smashed through the glass ceiling and claimed first place. Great job.

CMDR Alec Turner, glad to see you throwing a ship around again after your short hiatus. You seem to have forgotten all the requirements for this mission though as you didn’t enter silent running whilst scanning the container. I expected better from you after your change of character this week too. Damn.

So! The only change to the leaderboards is a magnificent effort by Ozric to take him up to top spot in Regulation.

There’s about 16 hours to go as I write this CMDRs, still time to make a difference. Let’s give it one last shot and give ‘em hell.

Dismissed.

Uh huh, ok, yup ... I see.

Would you just excuse me a moment as I need to go and have a quiet word with my ship's Silent Running control panel ...
