I Thought Planets Didn't Change After First Render?

Hi all, I'm deep out in the black at the moment looking for a potential base location for the future. I've found what I think is a suitable system and planet, and have been there several times to get screenshots. But when I went back to the system today the crater I would like to build a base in has vanished! The green lines on the planet are the same but the surface has changed.

I didn't think planets changed after first render, as I've never seen this anywhere else. Has anybody else seen this before? Cheers.

Did you actually capture the coordinates of the crater, because some features like these lines can be duplicated around the planet. It shouldn't change no, but without the coords recorded on the screenshot you could be in a set of duplicated lines.
Good point, well made. I'm back at my carrier now but will pop back and check that. Forgot to check at the time, wanted a glass of wine. I did get the coordinates the first time 🤔🫡

Thanks, you're right, the lines are copied. The actual co-ordinates are currently in darkness 😁 that must be how Frontier do it, only render half the planet then repeat it.

It's a good rumour though, a lot of people believe it'll be the next big update. There are clues too...
  • Frontier do have a history with that type of game
  • When they said there's a new feature they said "It's completely new" and "We're interested to see how you will all use it"
On top of which they already have all the assets in-game to make it work, from carriers to Odyssey settlements, so it shouldn't be that much work

I'm hopeful anyway 😁

Some features will apparently disappear depending on the angle of the light hitting them and your height above them. Your planetside pictures show a very shallow crater that will barely show if the light is coming directly from above.

Just don't work yourself up too much about it, wouldn't be the first time people get disappointed with the eventual result due to first class tickets on the hype-train. Could as well be the barkeeper serving drinks and food and we all have to consume it in order to stay alive. :D

Honestly the food and drinks sounds like a good idea to me lol I haven’t figured out how were all running shipping businesses that have no overhead or upkeep yet lol

I feel like a crater is a poor place to put a base. Surely you'd want an elevated position that has a good view of the surrounding landscape?

Or googly eyes that we can attach to our ships.

I think that there was a big planet update, not the most recent one, but the update just before that. I noticed that all the data in my GPU shaders was updated on game start, which does not usually happen. Seems that the planet surface generation algorithm got a big change. They seemed way better after the update, more realistic procedural generation, difficult to judge though without images, I just remember thinking that it had been updated and improved at the time, I was on a planet surface looking for selenium when the update occurred.
