Sorry Michael, couldnt resist...:)

It is a pertinant point though, what OS or formats do you think Elite 4 will or should be released on and what are the implications arising from that?

Will it be lreleased on PC first and then ported to Console, or the other way round?

Ok, can we get this thread back on topic, if we must do a my OS is better than your OS at least give it its own thread.

Michael
Well Michael, you asked for it so don't complain (not that I think you would !)

My favourite OS in order of preference :
Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.1
Mac OS X (Leopard)
Windows XP
Windows 7
Windows 98
Windows 95

Those are the only OS i've used.
I see no need to upgrade to Ubuntu 9
Windows 7 looks great but uses too much system performance (and 20gig hard drive !)

So, who's next ?

It might also beg the question that with the impending release of DX11 and the variation in the architecture whether this will be catered for.

I'm not sure what the implications of this are but it seems to me that DX11 has been created with an ease of development in mind and the added features (Compute Shaders, Multithreaded Rendering, Tessilation etc) might be something that could be missed in a console version development?

Having said that, from what I understand, the DX11 runtime will run on DX9 and DX10 hardware bringing some of the DX11 features to earlier hardware. I guess the question is - is the game being developed initially for the PC and then ported or do these things get developed in parallel?

I assume it will be developed for the PC first the ported to the consoles etc.

I would be dissapointed if it was the other way around.

Fair enough - just keep it a clean fight :)

i think i'd still prefer it on the Xbox than my PC. (monkey island has just be re-released to download on xbox.....so come on, please, with sugar on top can we have FFE on the xbox too?)

Anyway, back to great OS.

The Archimedes had a great OS, which actually could multi-task, rather than just say it could and then...not. But of course, my fondest memories are of the trusty old Amiga. Must admit, I'm still tempted sometimes to buy another A1200 from ebay or somewhere. I still have the original copy of Frontier for the Amiga - Yep, with the T-Shirt!

Basic on the ZX-81. Pimped to the max with the 16k RAM pack of course.

The only platform i have successfully written a game on.

I seem to remember that there was a mouse based BBC operating system - I'll see if I can find some related links...

Found something :D http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/docs/NiddValley/NiddValley_IllustratorPaintbox.pdf

I especially like that you had to load the software for it with a tape... ah tape drives - they were the days.

For my OS preference, I think I would still have to side with Acorns RISCOS - it's was a spectacularily good operating system in it's day. linky

That's one groovy mouse Steve!:D

The Amiga's Workbench for me though, solid, fast & reliable.

Because most people who wear free t-shirts are not very image-conscious, and this may well also manifest itself in their choice of body maintenance (or lack of).

Our old Beeb had 64K sideways ram I think - I never quite understood what it was for LOL.

What I always wanted tho was an Amiga 500 - that had the best games by far. All the best arcade conversions were on there.

But noooo - my father was hooked on the Acorns and the next computer that turned up was the Acorn A410.

I was a pretty cool computer all told - and it had some brilliant games - Interdictor, Zarch and Arc Elite not being the least.

There's no denying it, the Amiga was a quality machine.

The games I still occasionally fire up are

Frontier (of course)
Monkey Island.
Damoclese
Pirates
Pinball Dreams & Fantasies
Speedball

To name a few (I could go on and on.)

And Steve, Dads are all the same, I had the same problem with a Grifter and a BMX, even though I'm a Dad myself I still cant understand why I couldn't have the BMX....GRRRR

Yep, came in the box!!

As for cool Acorn games, I really enjoyed Chocks Away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0x5JbmU6HU
I used to play it split screen co-op with my brother. Ah good old days. (But did prefer the Amiga)

Haha that is so cool - so many memories - this guy has most of my fav games in his Youtube account!

FTT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfvcPHNUSf0
Corruption: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFC5kYortnE (gotta love the theme tune :D )
Apocalypse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dsgNem8ozY
Conquerer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p04EZboXc5M
