She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

The mention of atmospheric flight is, surely, the biggest thing about the announcement!

Shows some longer term thinking for sure…

I don’t think visibility is going to be too much of an issue, although not as good as the Asp, but I think the height of cockpit with nothing below it, and no indication of where the rest of the ship is, might take some getting used to.
This is my take away from it too. Especially when you look at the wing rear edges that look like control surfaces for atmospheric flight. I really hope the as yet unannounced new feature is atmospheric landings - especially ELWs but that might be pushing it.

It looks like it’s potentially an interesting ship. I use a DBX for exploring, its not quite got the range of a ‘Conda but infinitely nicer to fly and great for exobiology due to the small footprint. This new ship looks like it has a compact footprint too but we can’t fully compare it yet.

If this thing really will have exceptional jump range, we are either looking at a very low mass on a C5 FSD, or a very high mass on a C6 FSD.
As a medium ship it would not need to have either a very low or high mass, in relation to other medium ships (which range from 150t to 580t hull mass).

With a 6A SCO FSD, G5 Increased Range, Mass Manager, a total jump weight of 532t would give a jump range (full of an expected 32t of fuel) of c.72.6LY without a GFSB and c.83.0LY with a G5 GFSB.

For the same ranges the 5A SCO FSD version (same engineering, other internals, etc.) would need a jump weight of c.300te.

Does anyone else just think this when reading the name?

I'm so very confused.

Looks great and live stream says they’ve used the Mamba cockpit - which is one of my favourites.

I wonder what hardpoints it will come with … most ZP ships are well appointed, weapon wise, but this is specifically an exploration ship … despite that … I’m kinda hoping it will come with some decent hard points as a “better jump range Mamba” would make a fantastic “general purpose” mission runner if it can defend itself.

2x C2 and 2xC3 - comparable to the Phantom - would be nice …

The innovative feature of this ship is that it will have to land sideways: no need for silly foldable wings.

B-Wing from Star Wars had some unusual layout with a rotating cockpit - which made it appear located in the extreme left of the ship if landed or in normal flight and top with s-foils in combat configuration

Anyways, from the stream, only the wing engines seem to rotate for VTOL operation... so no "nose turning" to land sideways 🤣

Never has been with me, when landing on a surface it is usually nose down until the ship stops, then level it out...
Occasionally the speed on contact is excessive, particularly when I forget FA is off... Hence why my sightseeing ships have big shields and lots of hull strength...

I decided walking would do me some good, thanks.

"Mandalay" by Rudyard Kipling

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea,

There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me;

For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the temple-bells they say:

"Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!"

Come you back to Mandalay,

Where the old Flotilla lay:

Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay?

On the road to Mandalay,

Where the flyin'-fishes play,

An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!

2

'Er petticoat was yaller an' 'er little cap was green,

An' 'er name was Supi-yaw-lat - jes' the same as Theebaw's Queen,

An' I seed her first a-smokin' of a whackin' white cheroot,

An' a-wastin' Christian kisses on an 'eathen idol's foot:

Bloomin' idol made o' mud

Wot they called the Great Gawd Budd

Plucky lot she cared for idols when I kissed 'er where she stud!

On the road to Mandalay...

3

When the mist was on the rice-fields an' the sun was droppin' slow,

She'd git 'er little banjo an' she'd sing "Kulla-lo-lo!

With 'er arm upon my shoulder an' 'er cheek agin my cheek

We useter watch the steamers an' the hathis pilin' teak.

Elephints a-pilin' teak

In the sludgy, squdgy creek,

Where the silence 'ung that 'eavy you was 'arf afraid to speak!

On the road to Mandalay...

4

But that's all shove be'ind me - long ago an' fur away

An' there ain't no 'buses runnin' from the Bank to Mandalay;

An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells:

"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."

No! you won't 'eed nothin' else

But them spicy garlic smells,

An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an' the tinkly temple-bells;

On the road to Mandalay...

5

I am sick o' wastin' leather on these gritty pavin'-stones,

An' the blasted English drizzle wakes the fever in my bones;

Tho' I walks with fifty 'ousemaids outer Chelsea to the Strand,

An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understand?

Beefy face an' grubby 'and -

Law! wot do they understand?

I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land!

On the road to Mandalay...

Ship me somewheres east of Suez, where the best is like the worst,

Where there aren't no Ten Commandments an' a man can raise a thirst;

For the temple-bells are callin', an' it's there that I would be

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, looking lazy at the sea;

On the road to Mandalay,

Where the old Flotilla lay,

With our sick beneath the awnings when we went to Mandalay!

O the road to Mandalay,

Where the flyin'-fishes play,

An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!
