She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

So theory crafting elsewhere and I noticed something that stood out.

Zac said it's been designed for flying in atmospheres, but there's currently no difference between tenuous and non atmospheric planets.
So...

Flaps?
Pretty sure it's even a classic wing shape, given the thicker leading edge that tapers off to the trailing edge. Even ignoring the flaps it does look to me like someone has actually copied a real aircraft wing and not just stuck bits of metal out the side like the fins we see on the current ships.

Although I won't be getting too excited with planning my pilgrimage back to Scirocco Station just yet.

Very yes please to both of these, and atmospheric landings have been on my mind since they said a 'new feature'....

Is it to be 'Expansion III - A New Hope'....

...squee....

Unfortunately I think this is too much for one year of convalescence of the company. I think it will be somethieng less unique like Ricarod's idea of on-foot thargoid combat with infected humans.

When I think about it I think more possible is EVA (because we have physical engine for that), but it seems to need ship interior (at least for new generation ships, but it wouldn't be improvement for everyone), or things like geology. I think base building is more pssible than more atmo planets, but I still hope for that, because looking for games like Planet Coaster 2 or Jurrasic World Evo, they know how to do more variable life, water, and even animals. So, finger crossed it will be something what makes us WOW.

Slightly thicker atmospheres on the way..?
And ten years ago David Braben himself said the ships were designed with interiors in mind, and that turned out to be meaningless.
I'm not saying Zac is telling porkies, but colour me sceptical. Frontier have a history of dangling carrots.

The ship looks nice, although doesn't really fit Zorgon-Peterson. Like the Type 8 didn't fit Lakon, FDev clearly gave up trying to design their own ships.

Exploration-wise, if it's going have jump range comparable to the Anaconda, it's going to dwarf all other medium explorer ships like Type 8 did for medium cargo.
Franky it's going to dwarf Anaconda too, unless you really need those AFMUs. Fuel tank size might slow it down a bit compared to the Conda over long distances though.

On another note, sad to see so many people defending 13-20$ P2W. FDev really did drive off a lot of players who actually cared by mishandling the game this much. Mishandling the community too, Steam moderators abuse their power to ban players and delete conversations that don't defend FDev.
As someone who has LEP I might have a bigger grudge because FDev neglected us more than any other part of the community, heck even these ships are given for free to Streamers but not to people who supported FDev before others did.
Even then as LEP, I would've preferred to buy an actual DLC with Content and Ships, rather than this P2W.

The fact something was said 10 years ago and IIRC in the time of crowdfunding campaing is totally irrelevant if you compare to actual information... but... about flying in atmospheres. We have atmospheric flying since ody... Noone said about high destiny atmosphere or all atmospheres. It is just wishful thining, not trying to read between words.

You know this ship is imilar to ship from previous versions of Elite, right?

We don't know anything about optional, but I hope you're right, because these new ships are new generation shops, so they should be a way better.

It is a company, not charity foundation. It is hard, but it is true. I started playing year ago, and it is really nice to pay for what they do (and I am not a hardcore player, and I really don't have a lot of income, but if I compare time spend on playing it is like 1000 times cheaper than any other activity like cinema or theatre)... even cheaper than netflix or other VODs.
I understnad that some players are feelinh bad becuase of something what happened before, buit gosh... if I would feel that bad, I just would not want to play anymore. I totally can't understand that. I treat it lkie a normal customer situation. I like the product, product has own price. I want it or not. I don'w except anytihng more for free. But I still have new ships for free... or I can pay to have it earile and if I can and want to support game development.

My Phantom jumps around 50 LY (everything on it is G5 engineered), I wonder if the Mandalay will be able to carry the same amount of weapons and armour?
As it is designed for explorers, I wouldn't be surprised if it only had a single C1 hardpoint and paper thin shield ability... After all, guns and armour are not needed out in the black, are they?
With the facts we have so far I am going for 4xC4 and armour/hull strength at Cutter levels, jump range thanks to the class 8 FSD.

No, but I have eyes that can see a cockpit that is set back from the front of the ship, does not extend to the underneath of the ship, and has two raised bumps to either side of it.

It's a cockpit design for keeping everything above you, which when you're trying to spot tiny biological life, or land on a planet's surface, is not what you need.

Sure these are only concept images, there's time for them to add a glass panel bottom, or cameras in the cockpit that show you the view below. But let's get real, this is Exploration, so it won't 😊
I would point out that the downward view of all the ships in the game is less than impressive due to the huge dashboard etc, yes you can get glimpses down and to the sides but in level flight they are just glimpses.

Someone said inverted flight which actually worked quite well until thrusters changed.

So is it going to be the best in game probably not, is it going to be worse than an Anaconda definitely not, is it going to be better than my current main explorer a Hauler probably.

It's honestly like they've just gone, the Mamba cockpit looks cool from the outside. Stick that on it.

Looks great, doesn't look like what I had hoped the first new Exploration ship in 9 years would look like.

Mamba has pretty good visibility. If you need to look down, flip over.

So, folding wing design then?

Inflatable, like a rigid inflatable boat, or bounce house.

It looks very unspaceshippy

Pretty much all fantasy/soft-sci-fi spaceships look very unspaceshippy, including everything in Elite.

Looks like speed brakes and flaps.

The only moving parts on the 'speed brake' portion look like the standard Zorgon-style pop-up radiators.

Its a snake. The Mandalay spitting cobra. So fits the original model of naming ships after snakes.

Yup, there's certainly plenty that they could expand into.

EVA investigations of derelicts (ships/stations/debris fields/...) could be good fun, and might perhaps best be carried out by drones/limpets controlled in the first person (to simplify matters).

I blow hot and cold on base building and, with you, would much prefer more flora and fauna 'roaming' on appropriate planets. I know that NMS is not to everyone's taste, but they've shown how much can be done.

Whatever - it is very nice to see FDev getting back 'on' ED and making some decent steps in taking it foward.

Streamers had access to a dedicated server build, they weren't "given" anything but marketing tools.
As someone who has LEP

Says it all really...
What are we "winning", again?

I would still expect if we get thicker-than-tenuous atmospheres that the first implementation would be gas giant atmospheres:
1) complexity of weather systems is much reduced at least in the very upper atmosphere: you've got some roll cells, you've got some spots, they're generally stable enough that they don't really need to evolve over the timescales players are persistently in them; anyone trying to get lower can just be crushed by the pressure before they get anywhere near the limitations of the sim
2) with Titans/Lagrange Clouds they already have the visual support needed for the upper cloud layers and "glowing plankton" is about as exciting as most of the lifeforms get
3) existing assets could probably largely be repurposed (e.g. stick the pointy end of an Orbis facing downwards and switch a few components around and you have a passable Star-Wars-style "cloud city")

I would be very surprised if something that significant was the post-Powerplay new feature, though, even if it would be a lot easier than any other sort of dense atmosphere.
