She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

Yea, i'm absolutely NOT impressed with the potential view from the Mandy's cockpit
...
Well, they touted it so much as a rival to the Jumpaconda, and nothing else but range which would be relevant to an explorer got any mention at all, it seems forseeable that this may become its most popular role. Just a long-distance travel ship, whether used in exploration or otherwise.

The best thing about an Anaconda as an exploration ship is that when you get to where you're going and realise how poorly it manouvers in supercruise, how difficult it is to land on planets, how poor the visibility from the cockpit is, is that when you get fed up of it and turn it around to go home and swap it for something else, it does get you there quicker.

It doesn't really matter what new ships are introduced into the game, forumites will still complain, even before they know the specifications, that they were not what they wanted...

I'm OK though, I'll take every new ship they bring out, for Arx, on the day it hits the store, I just like flying ships, it works for me.

To be fair they did make a point regarding the forward disembarkation and lighting around underside which would indicate exobiology.

To be fair, they are good to have on an expedition team. They can carry everything you didn't bring because you optimized your ship all the way. They can do scouting, rescue and repair. Visiting Beagle Point in a group with a participating Anaconda letting everyone play with his SLFs is a party you remember. If Mandy gives Conda a run for its until now unique range, it won't do all of the other things. It would be boring if there was only one meta and everything else obsolete.

That's true, so easy to forget. Anyway, my original post was formulated as open questions, not criticism of things we don't know yet. The cockpit view limitation seems pretty obvious though.

Better than the Anaconda (a ship I had long enough to fly it out of the mailslot, then back in and sold), that is a flying heap of slurry...
Probably better than the Courier I favour too, not that it matters.

I'm so used to flying with the nose tilted down over planetary surfaces that the visibility comes second place, with the ship being nimble and controllable coming first.

To be fair, I've always wanted to explore in Mamba, just because it's cockpit is such a nice place to be. It always felt a little beneath it to go fighting in. Shame it's internals make it's long distance credentials a little too lacklustre, even with an open minded approach to the build. Still doable of course, but just not quite well enough for me to personally justify the build.

Is the Mandalay going to be perfectly optimal? Probably not, but that's part of the fun of the game for me; making things work, finding work arounds, and generally finding non-meta solutions that are less efficient, but more fun. Some ships just don't work for certain activities, but if there's one thing Elite does well, it's allowing players to try anything, and do things in spite of the limitations.

Whaaaat … being happy with getting new ships to fly in your spaceship flying game? Outrageous!!

Precisely. For exobiology a ship that is easy to maneuver (especially in yaw!) and easy to land in rough territory outweighs one which has better downward visibility, but needs a perfectly flat 100x200 meters patch of surface to set down.

How easy Mandalay will be to maneuver in yaw and set down shall remain to be seen, but it looks like it has the smallest footprint of medium ships. If it hits the sweet spot of being the easiest-to-land medium ship, having jumprange comparable to 'Conda and having good supercruise handling, for me it'll easily beat out AspX and Phantom for non-carrier supported exobiology ship while also being the best ship to explore the extreme fringes of the Galaxy.

You can even use the outside camera while flying over ground, just takes getting used to not having a hud even when you don't actually need it. But we can ask about accomodations from designs announced for a purpose, not?

A huuge trader.
Mk8 is medium, contestant to OG Python.

Or it'll be a Cobra 5, for the Swiss Army Knife category.
I'd quite like a Cobra V, and wouldn't mind it being a bit Python-like, so a strong all-rounder.

I still fly my Cobra IV now and again (sorry to all those wincing/mumbling), it's not a great ship but it's quite capable if thought of as a mini-Python.

As an aside, I'd quite like for hard-points to be upgradable, perhaps at the cost of reducing the size of internal slots.

4th ship this year is a Saud Kruger medium, I'm pretty certain about that. What we get next year ? No idea.
I used to think so too, then I read the story of Saud Kruger. The researcher's seat is already taken. Do we need another slow passenger liner?

I think it depends on what you or I expect on a ship , this ship doesn't scream explorer it's looks more of a planetary fighter. I like the way that ship design is going but think " aw fur coat and nae knickers " . But keep it going Fdev. I won't swap my dolphin explorer . So 1 fighter python MK2 , 1 trader mk8 and 1 "explorer" all we have left is either 1 med imperial or some fancy looking passenger ?? I hope it's an imperial
The last ona Imperial? Why not Federal? :)
I don't think so it will be anything behind rank-wall. I think the best option for frontier is something for 10/40th anniversary. Something big, and all-might, like anaconda was in the past.

No, we need a fast medium pad Passenger ship, as any member of PDES or Op Ida will tell you.
(Admittedly the current wave of burning outposts thousands of LS from the entry point will likely be a fading memory by the time it arrives, but 'Goids have a habit of coming back at some point...)

The fact is that some kind of new Cobra, Medium passenger liner and some Big And Allmighty is what we need, but the next one at the end of the year sounds like something amazing.

Or two ships at once, one for Imperial and one for Feds, but I am not sure is it income-friendly solution for Frontier, and as we know, they need money to make this game bigger and greater :D

By the way lore-wise, Saud Kruger ships are made in imperial shipyards.

Ok I checked... and only one thing is problmatic for me in the mamba cabin as a explorer. This what you can see in attachmenet.
Second attachmenet is to ask how you like my mamba's name :D
