DLC18 discussion and predictions

How likely is it to get the full announcement today? Ig chances are not that good.. but omg I can't wait any longer so pls Frontier- ik u said to keep our eyes peeled for the next few weeks, but pls tell me that u meant till the launch for like all the animals reveals and such- and ik I'm being delulu but omg I NEED it. We waited 5 months and if it gonna in few weeks it means we waited for a DLC half of year- which it's a long time to wait.. mainly when the animals doesn't seems from what we saw rn that they needed too much attention. It's just cuz I'm too curious and excited.

I don’t know why people are expecting to wait weeks for a trailer. They said ‘keep your eyes peeled’. They wouldn’t say that unless a trailer was coming soon.
I think the ‘next few weeks’ comment was on relation to the release of the actual pack! I’m hoping for a trailer before Wednesday next week.
Here's my theory:
We get the free anniversary gift a bit early, as specified in the stream. How early you might ask? Next Friday. Why next Friday specifically? Because it's World Animal Day.
As for the trailer... I'd expect it to drop on a Tuesday, perhaps on October 8th (so after the free update)

Okay, after a good sleep, I decided to be a bit more positive that we are still getting new animals at this point (still not thrilled that two of them are cats, but...), even if this is the last pack. Mountain pack would be neat, but how would those other words such as Spurred or Dik-Dik fit into that? Could still be a zookeeper pack, but the artwork just screams Highlands to me.
General consensus is Highlands, but I'm not part of that, with a few points sticking to me, mainly the random zookeeper in the centre of the image. The context of coinciding with a moved forward Anniversary update, suggests pretty strongly this is the last one.

In terms of the dictionary, the Pallas Cat proves it's not needed to have been on there at all, with Pallas and Manul never being terms, so for a Zoo Keepers Collection, anything is on the table.

Both Markhor and Hamadryas got removed from the Dictionary, and both are in. Spurred, Sifaka and Dik-dik aren't highlands, but were also deleted. It is yet to be seen if that means anything.

they’ve said that the free update will be released along with the new dlc

“We've just got a little teaser for you of something that's coming up soon ... And this will be coming out alongside the free anniversary update."

Oh... Sorry but my hearing isn't too good and so I thought they'd release the two things separately...
Still, I think they might do something with World Animal Day.
It can't be a coincidence that they decided to tease this upcoming DLC just one week away from October 4th

Deep down I still hope that the pack might be good, or at least have something interesting (other than the Markhor which, to me, is perfect). Pallas' Cat is a nice surprise, and while I don't care about primates Hamadryas is a good pick.
However, the problem isn't what's in the pack (it is actually, but more on that later), the problem is: what ISN'T in the pack.
Tree Kangaroo, Echidna, Walrus, Secretary, Dik-Dik, basically all the animals I wanted will never show up in a mountain pack (MAYBE, huge emphasis on MAYBE, the tree kangaroo). So, to me, this pack already feels like a waste, because 4 out of 7 slots will be occupied by unnecessary clones and "filler animals" like, for example, spectacled bear or guanaco or yak. Animals that we already have, although in a slightly different colour (llama, highland cow, and don't get me started on the bears.)

As for the "this isn't the final pack"... Why wouldn't it be?
It's pretty clear that this is the final DLC. It's taken months to complete and it's not even released yet... I don't think Frontier will spend 6 more months working on a new Planet Zoo DLC, especially considering how PC2 is right around the corner.
We should simply give up on these stupid illusions and face reality as it is.
There's pretty good indications that it is not the last DLC and none of the arguments you mention are really meaningful.
  1. Some animals had been leaked already, including some of those you mentioned. They won't fit in highlands so most likely they'll come later.
  2. PZ is Frontier's most profitable game. Even the lesser DLCs (Arid/Barnyard) seem enough to make a profit. With some high demand species left, it would be stupid to not release more.
  3. The time it takes for a DLC doesn't mean anything here. Yes, it took them six months to release, that doesn't mean it took that time to complete it. Also, they reduced staff and put more emphasis on Console edition. Yet, they're still releasing packs. It's also likely PZ designers will focus on the sequel now, but given the leaks it's likely that the next DLCs are already pretty much done, just not released.
I'm not saying anything is guaranteed, but at this point all signs are we're getting more DLCs. My bet would be two this year (Barnyard / Mountains) and two next year (probably Rainforests / Safari), putting the total on 20. That would give one DLC-free year in preparation for PZ2.

Do you guys think it's possible that instead of ending PZ DLC completely we might just be moving to a 2 DLC per year model? I don't know the inner workings of Frontier obviously but maybe this is a way to keep support going a bit longer while PC2 is also getting content.
All the signs seem to be pointing to this. It also makes a lot of sense for the developers. They can put their efforts elsewhere (PC2, JW3, PZ2) while still releasing some content for the company's best-seller.

There was no representation from deserts from any other continent
I know this was pages ago but people need to stop lying about this (or at least, you know, do two seconds of googling the animals).

The sand cat range extends all the way into Central Asia, and the Dromedary's range extends into Asia as well (Middle East). Sure, we missed out on something from Australia, but what the hell does anyone expect from the "Arid Animal Pack"? Seriously, I have yet to actually see anyone suggest a suitable species as a replacement that isn't still an African animal (such as the Hamadryas baboon). The only other one that ever came up was the Indian crested porcupine instead of the African, but it's functionally identical.

Anything else would have been incredibly niche, beyond perhaps the Persian onager or something, but then you'd all bemoan the fact that the pack contained two wild asses.

I'll bet good money that if this is a Highlands/Mountains Pack, they'll find a way to shoehorn in muskoxen. The Arid Pack was full odd odd choices, so this wouldn't be any less odd to me.

That's exactly what I think is happening but I think they will keep up with that for only 1 year, the time to release one or two DLCs and I think they will be done after that. I'm totally okay with this idea :)

Although I agree with the fact that it took a long time for this DLC to be released, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is the last one. As a few people said, maybe it will be the strategy now, releasing only 2 packs / year. And maybe it's not a loss of money for Frontier because the staff working on PZ has been reduced so there are less people to pay for the development of the game.
Of course we say that because we want the best for this game but it doesn't seem stupid to me. And if the game ends here I'll do with that. There are plenty of mods out there that are more than enough for me to fill the gaps in official PZ roster (except for the walrus).

As much as I would love a muskox, I think it's unlikely. They're not typical mountain animals unlike the yak. It would've made more sense to have the muskox in Eurasia and save the takin for Highlands.

I also don't know which of the Arid species is odd. Sure, they're all geographically centred around Africa, but they're undoubtedly species from arid areas.

Black rhinoceroses and crested porcupines aren't exactly found in desert localities (as least, it's not their typical habitat). They would've been much more at home in the Grasslands Pack. Fun fact about muskoxen: they actually make minor migrations to higher elevation in Winter as to prevent getting stuck in deep snow!

Edit: Muskoxen also used to live in the Ural Mountains and the Dovre mountain range. It makes sense too, as caprines they're certainly no stranger to dealing with shifts in elevation.

Muskox doesn't really make any sense for a mountain pack since they live on the flat tundra.
I suppose it depends on how you define mountains. Musk oxen can live at relatively high altitudes and just by typing Musk Ox on google you can find photos where they are in the mountains :) Frontier has made bigger stretches from packs theme in the past (I don't know if this sentence is grammatically correct^^).
